“Venom: The Last Dance” brings back Tom Hardy’s Venom for a ridiculous, outlandish adventure unlike anything we’ve ever seen in a superhero-inspired film. CinemaBlend’s Managing Editor Sean O’Connell spoke with the film’s cast including Juno Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tom Hardy himself, as well as writer/director and “Venom” franchise mainstay Kelly Marcel, about everything from how Venom learned to dance, all the way to Eddie Brock’s own line of Crocs. For an interview that is about as absurd as the trilogy itself, inquire within.

00:00we want to promote brock's crocs that's what it's all about and that superheroes you know
00:05i mean can wear crocs and and they are very comfortable shoe it's a hero's shoe
00:15you of course were part of the dark knight rises so is it true that you will only join
00:19a superhero franchise if it's the third and final installment of a saga i you know i do have a
00:25thing
00:25about threes so yes i think i believe that you know i believe in the rule of three so um
00:31subconsciously
00:32i guess maybe yeah a little bit of energy to get it over the line it's like the last yeah
00:38the last
00:38person on the relay team it's like needs to be pretty good you don't have to worry about sticking
00:43around you know that it's the end you're just gonna land that plane and move on yeah kelly audiences
00:50are going to interpret the title the last dance as being between venom and mrs chen i want to know
00:55where that sequence came from that idea how did you land on abba um well uh
01:03the dance sequence came from you know uh our bonkers brains really wanted to do something special with
01:10mrs chen because she's such a fan favorite and wanted to get her out of that shop and into
01:15you know a nice sequin dress um and i just really thought it would be funny to see venom dancing
01:22um
01:22and it is his last dance so you know we wanted to send him out having had a great time
01:29with and he's
01:29good at dancing as well oh it's that's so tightly choreographed where did he pick those moves up yeah
01:34he also has seen rain man and swingers yeah but at night he comes out louise he comes out we
01:41had
01:41initially in venom 2 we wanted to have um venom like like turn morph in the night and take eddie
01:48out
01:49yeah go and do things but whilst eddie was asleep and not know so he'd wake up and read things
01:54in
01:54the newspaper that had happened yeah and uh and it was venom going out and about at night because
01:59technically he could do that so i'm assuming that that's where he's picked up soon some of these dance
02:03moves uh chuto i want to ask this in the wake of of you guys just having a very successful
02:08new york
02:08comic-con panel but you know the the topic that gets thrown around that gets reported is superhero
02:13fatigue can you talk about that especially have in light of what you see from the fans who turned
02:17out to support you guys yesterday yeah i mean it was incredibly exciting wasn't it like everybody was
02:24so kind of up for it and just you know it's amazing energy and enthusiasm and um you know i
02:31think if the
02:31films are good and the films work and the films that kind of have like this one you know just
02:36has this
02:37really great emotional arc to it as well as these incredible characters that are really beloved and
02:44um and all of the passion that's behind it from tom and kelly and and then a cast you know
02:50some people
02:51who've come back who've been in the franchise before and then new people who have fallen in love with it
02:56and you know all of that really speaks to something that i think can really continue to communicate and
03:01connect with fans and um and people you know all around the world which is what the film does and
03:06so um you know i'm excited about it i'm excited about this project it's in its own venom verse
03:12and so we don't treat it like an archetypal superhero movie we just always treat these stories as their own
03:20you know you know singular story an arc and do what we feel from the heart with these characters
03:28and they have a lot of emotion and a lot of depth um and and i and i just think
03:34if the story's good
03:35and the characters you love then they'll they'll win the day i'm with you to the end
03:45and what do you remember about seeing the symbiote for the very first time
03:48versus how the effects have evolved to now where you can do almost anything do you know what's
03:53incredible is that this is the the the visual effects getting better and better but one of
03:58the challenges of in this movie was that we wanted to see venom during the daylight at nighttime you can
04:03technically hide uh a multitude of sins because you know he's dark the night is dark you can get
04:09probably you know more bang for your buck in some aspect from that so taking him and bringing him
04:15into the daylight was a huge um technical shift for the for the team yeah and john moffat and aaron
04:21ball and spent a long time making sure that he looked great in the daylight and and that's all on
04:29them that they're an incredible incredible team the symbiotic relationship between tom and kelly i've
04:34learned so much about the way they work together on the second film and more people are learning
04:38about her and her contributions to the franchise it was magic being on set because of that you know
04:43it's like they have been working on this for i believe seven or more years together and it really
04:48you really feel the connection between the two of them and the creativity and the passion for this
04:54specific dynamic duo you know and i think tom has it feels like venom and eddie mean a lot to
05:02him
05:03and he really they are somewhat a part of him you know and i feel like i mean i have
05:08thought about
05:09this before but how would you ever be able to cast another venom combo it'd be hard that's a hard
05:14pair of shoes to fill because they kind of have become so iconic and that's you know i think
05:20the balance between tom and kelly doing this together and getting to have kelly direct this
05:26last dance and have it be a love story between venom and eddie is something that i think
05:31is really profound you know you know you realize as you're you know as you sort of fall in love
05:37with
05:37this um with this franchise that you know just what kelly's involvement has been you know and just
05:43how instrumental she is to all aspects of this kind of um you know coming to fruition and then to
05:50get
05:50the opportunity to direct it herself and to tell this story in this way and in the way she wants
05:56is really kind of an amazing kind of arc you know within an arc within the arc of the trilogy
06:02is her
06:03own arc within within that and it's um you know and i think for me it was just really great
06:08it was
06:09like a real privilege to be a sort of part of that a part of the uh of that really
06:13kind of emotional and
06:15and passionate journey of all of these kind of key players in the venom world why does eddie have
06:21such a hard time holding on to his shoes in this movie uh well you'll have to ask kelly that
06:26you know
06:27like i think it was it's all in the details you know like if life isn't hard enough anyway for
06:32him
06:33why not like uh give him footwear that just doesn't it doesn't it's not sustainable it doesn't stick
06:37around long enough to like support you i just like messing with him we wanted to promote we want to
06:43promote brock's crocs that's what it's all about and that superheroes you know what i mean can wear
06:49crocs and and and they are very comfortable shoe it's a hero's shoe brock's crocs you may not make
06:57it out of this alive buddy eddie the time has come
07:13you
