00:36I've been watching her films for a really long time now and I've adored her always.
00:40She has these subjects that deal with human emotions in their most subtle forms, always.
00:47She has a well-earned reputation as somebody who is extraordinary with actors and is able
00:53to help them reach the most profound levels of their character.
00:57She's also very loose with the dialogue which was great and thrilling to sort of explore
01:01scenes knowing that you're sort of using colloquialisms from 1929.
01:07Every morning I would show up on set, after a couple of days I just realized whatever I
01:11bring to the scene is not what we're going to end up shooting because she would just take
01:15it and throw them in that direction and in that direction and it's probably her process
01:19as well, you know, to see okay how does that look, how does that fit.
01:22Great actors have an immense intuition about their own character and I have a lot of respect
01:26for that and I have a lot of fun with that.
01:29Having Suzanne be the director added some sort of sensibility coming from Europe as opposed
01:35to the United States.
01:36I think you are on the porch.
01:39She's very on the target all the time I think.
01:41She's paying a lot of attention to the work.
01:44She never lets you take the easy way out of any scene.
01:48The work really manifests itself between action and thank you.
01:53The way I work or which I think characterizes many of my films is that there is a realness
01:59to them.
02:00The story in itself is epic so it kind of doesn't need a wide brushed visual language to sustain
02:07it.
02:08So what Suzanne's done I think is kind of made it more domestic and plausible, you know,
02:15it's not elevated to some kind of opera.
02:18She just has a level of believability and a truth meter that you can see throughout all
02:24of her movies.
02:25I would say that I have a very, very, very strong bullshit detector.
02:32So I can see in the scene whether it's for real, whether it has an element of authenticity
02:38and honesty or not.
