Kosovar Traditional Wedding Makeover
Transcription
00:01In Doña Lubina, a small village in Kosovo, old ladies prepare young brides,
00:07painting their faces in many layers of colors as part of the centuries-old tradition.
00:13The bride's face is decorated with three colors, gold, red, and blue.
00:21Gold symbolizes wealth and happiness.
00:27The lines which extend over the rest of her face symbolize sun rays.
00:35The delicate process takes almost two hours.
00:39First, the bride's face is covered with a white base.
00:43Then, circles, which symbolize the circle of life and the sun, are drawn in red, blue, and gold on her
00:51cheeks.
00:54Red symbolizes fertility, and blue protects the bride from the evil eye.
01:04The bridal makeup and ceremony are performed to ward off the evil eye and all other evils which the bride
01:12may encounter.
01:21Some also say it is to make sure all brides look the same, so there is no jealousy among them.
01:32After the makeup, the bride is dressed by the village people in the traditional handmade costume, which consists of five
01:39to six layers.
01:43Although this tradition is extraordinary and impressive, not many young Kosovan girls are interested in it.
01:50Today, there are only two people who know the technique and continue the tradition.
01:57Locals are trying their best to preserve and keep this remarkable tradition, unique to Kosovo, alive.
02:08A cone is placed on her head and covered with a red veil.
02:12She is carried on a white horse to the wedding ceremony and is not allowed to speak until she arrives.
