00:02I got a call from Frank Marshall
00:04after I directed a very small film
00:07called Safety Not Guaranteed
00:08and Stephen saw it
00:10and we came in
00:12and we spoke for a little while
00:13and we talked
00:15not about necessarily even what this film
00:17was going to be
00:18but about why people love
00:21this franchise, why people love these stories
00:23and what are the elements
00:24that have connected with people over 22 years
00:27that we wanted to try
00:28and recapture for a new generation
00:31and it was a great conversation
00:33and we all agreed that it was going to be about the story
00:36and about the characters
00:37and having a narrative
00:39that was going to draw people in
00:41because that's what makes you believe in the dinosaurs
00:43is if the people feel real.
00:48I think the deciding factor was Colin himself
00:51because I had seen Safety Not Guaranteed
00:56and I felt that the very last scene
00:59of Safety Not Guaranteed
01:00was what convinced me
01:02that Colin was the right person
01:03to direct Jurassic World.
01:04That combined with the fact
01:06that he was completely enthusiastic
01:09both as a filmmaker and as a fan
01:11but also had a story.
01:13He had a story to tell.
01:14He didn't just come in and say
01:15I'd like to render my services
01:17directing the fourth installment.
01:19He came in with an actual story
01:20and just on paper
01:22even before there was a screenplay
01:24his story worked.
01:25But when I say the last scene
01:27in Safety Not Guaranteed
01:29the film could have stayed a small movie
01:31up until the last literally 45 seconds.
01:35It could have stayed a very small
01:36independent Sundance film.
01:38But he took a leap of faith
01:41with the audience and those characters
01:43that we weren't believing
01:44knew what they were talking about.
01:46And when this character
01:47that you doubted for most of the film
01:49suddenly proves to all of us
01:52that we were wrong and he's right
01:54Colin stepped into the mainstream
01:56the commercial mainstream.
01:59And because I flew out of my seat
02:01when I saw the last scene of that movie
02:03Frank Marshall showed me the film.
02:04And that's when I knew
02:05that if Colin was good in the meeting
02:08he was going to get the job.
02:13Well, you know, initially
02:15there were a couple elements
02:17that were there when we showed up
02:18and Stephen had had the idea
02:19to make it a fully functioning theme park.
02:22And we thought that was incredible.
02:24I really felt like we should enter this park
02:26through the eyes of a child
02:27which we do in the film
02:29because that's what we are
02:31when we think of a fully functioning
02:33Jurassic Park.
02:35And then the other idea
02:36that he brought forward
02:37which I thought was fascinating
02:38is let's make a movie
02:41about our relationship
02:42with animals on our planet right now
02:46but replace them with dinosaurs.
02:47And we cage animals.
02:50We view them in zoos.
02:51We use them for agriculture.
02:52We use them in weaponry for war.
02:54And taking off from that idea
02:57and exploring, you know,
02:58what if humans and dinosaurs
03:00have been coexisting for a while
03:02and we get to go to the next level
03:03of that relationship?
03:04There were a lot of really interesting
03:06themes and ideas in that.
03:07and we just grabbed onto that
03:08and ran with it as far as we could.
03:14I thought he had the chops for this
03:16and Colin believed in him
03:18and I really believed in him too.
03:20So it was a bit of a risk
03:21and of course when Guardians of the Galaxy
03:23came out,
03:24we all thought we were really smart.
03:26Even though we didn't make
03:27Guardians of the Galaxy,
03:29they made us look really smart.
03:30But look, Chris is a wonderful actor.
03:32The important thing is
03:33is he's a strong, strong,
03:34has a strong screen presence.
03:36He has a tremendous sense of humor
03:39and he's a team player.
03:41And so he's going to go
03:42all the way with his career.
03:44He's really going to go far.
