00:00Hi, I'm Brad Bird, screenwriter and director of Pixar's latest film, Ratatouille.
00:06Ratatouille involves the story of Remy, who's a rat who dreams of becoming a chef at Paris' finest restaurant.
00:14And this film is personal to me in a way because I think that we all have sort of impossible
00:23dreams
00:24and, you know, do what we can to pursue them.
00:27And this is the ultimate impossible dream.
00:38The director of the film is this guy, John Bird, Fred, Fred Bird, something Bird.
00:43He's done something about a robot and then a thing with superheroes.
00:48I'm not that familiar with this stuff.
00:50Get to your stations, let's go, go, go!
00:52Yeah, yeah!
00:54I can't help but smile when I think about Brad Bird.
00:56This guy is more intense than Remy the rat is in the film, really, when it comes down to it.
01:01Boom!
01:02Brad loves directing physical comedy.
01:05He's just a genius at that.
01:07Can you overshoot that lip smack at the end?
01:09Yeah.
01:10Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:11To observe how he can direct animation is quite something to see.
01:16It should be a little more elitist, like survive in my kitchen.
01:21Go!
01:22He is always striving for the better idea, the better way to write something, the better way to animate it,
01:26the better way to pull it off.
01:27Everyone says he's a really nice guy.
01:28He doesn't come out of the booth and he hasn't let anyone see his face yet.
01:31He's a little creepy.
01:34This is Patton's little joke because I hate people saying yes in movies.
01:40It's one of my pet peeves.
01:42So he's getting me right now.
01:44I always responded to the premise of this movie because it's an absurd, far-fetched premise.
01:50The idea of a rat wanting to enter gourmet cooking.
01:54Those two worlds could not be more far apart.
01:57Rats are not terribly picky with what they eat and Remy is just the opposite.
02:03He doesn't want to take in anything that isn't some kind of experience for him.
02:08I can't help myself.
02:10I like good food, okay?
02:14Remy, by his own sort of needs and desires, gets involved in the human world and he has sort of
02:20an explosive interaction with it.
02:22It's as much about Remy as it is about being a part of a society where you feel like you're
02:27wired a little bit differently.
02:28He wants to express himself in a way that the world does not want him to.
02:33I think it presents a character with a huge obstacle to overcome.
02:38It's an unexpected movie.
02:39Just when you think it's going to go left, it'll turn right.
02:42And it does all of that in a very goofy way that still is very heartfelt.
02:48This is an insane film, but if you see it, you will believe it.
02:52It's a Pixar film.
02:54That kind of just sort of says it all.
02:56It's a Pixar movie.
02:57It's going to be at a level that's just above everything else.
03:06Yeah, that's right.
03:09Yes!
03:12It's a Pixar movie.
