00:30We looked at Piero's life and ultimately we settled on this idea of beginning with the moment when Cosimo must
00:38take over from his father because that would allow us to talk about the beginnings of the bank, largely in
00:43flashbacks to Giovanni, which you'll see in future episodes because Dustin Hoffman continues in flashback beyond the first episode.
00:51But also talk about what the Medici family changed because this is when the Medici family is changing Florence.
00:59You know, by the time you get to Lorenzo Magnificent, you're in the high renaissance.
01:03They've already done a lot to change the course of history.
01:06And so, you know, seeing him, seeing Donatello and the David, seeing the dome being completed, those just felt like
01:13irresistible stories that we had to tell.
01:15And actually now we're working on season two, and that will be Lorenzo the Magnificent.
01:20So we get both this way.
01:22One of the aspects, one of the interesting aspects is the human factor, that every character from Medici to the
01:30humblest man is conflicted between the man that he wants to be and the man or the woman that he
01:38has to be.
01:39That was an interesting point of view for you.
01:42I think to me, absolutely, that's the single most moving thing about this story.
01:48And there's many things about this story that move me.
01:50But the idea of sacrifice, that there are ideas that are worth sacrificing your life for.
01:58And I think, you know, Cosimo represents that in this story.
02:01He gave up so much to help build the world we all live in today.
02:05And we were eager to show that sacrifice.
02:07I mean, you see it in the first episode when he sacrifices the love of his life.
02:11And he submits to his father's will that he will leave the bank.
02:17But, you know, he does that and much more.
02:20He commits sins that he really believes are sins and that he will pay for with his immortal soul to
02:25create the world that we all see now.
02:27And that's the story we wanted to tell.
02:29And that's how we sort of shaped history and picked moments from history and adapted things to sort of highlight
02:34that human emotional truth in the Medici saga.
02:41You know, as Sergio will tell you, anything good is difficult.
02:46It's always, if you're doing it right, it's really, really hard.
02:49But I think the thing that I realized, never having done historical drama, it actually has a lot more in
02:55common with the X-Files than you'd think.
02:57Because the good episodes of the X-Files, the best ones, they were about something.
03:02There's a reason you've created this monster, right?
03:05It's saying something true.
03:07Monsters may not be real, but we've exaggerated things about people because there's an idea we want to explore.
03:12And when you take a look at history, it requires the same kind of understanding.
03:16There's a reason you're telling the story.
03:18And you have to know what that reason is to shape history for a narrative.
03:23And that's the best kind of storytelling to me, when you know it's about something.
03:28You're asking interesting questions.
03:31Thank you.
