Bobby took us Below The Belt to break down the possibility of the Cowboys trading defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa.
Transcript
00:00Oh, so you want the Cowboys to make a move, huh?
00:06See what I did there, Chassie?
00:07Oh, so you want the Cowboys?
00:09Oh, so.
00:11Oh, so.
00:11Oh, so.
00:12That's the name of a player.
00:13Let's talk about it in Below the Belt, which is sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors
00:16and Window Nation.
00:17Sean, not a fan of the pun.
00:18No.
00:18I thought it was solid.
00:19I mean, it just came to me.
00:21It's your segment.
00:21And I tried it.
00:22For now.
00:23All right.
00:23So there was buzz last week about the the Max Crosby trade, including Oso Digizua potentially
00:32as a player who could be going towards the Raiders in the trade.
00:37It sounded like the Raiders didn't want players at all.
00:39There was Brian Thomas was thrown into the Jaguars deal.
00:43There was Ricky Scoops, who had a couple of big misses yesterday.
00:47Ricky Scoops saying that Jalen Carter might be made available.
00:51They did just spend a bunch of money on Jordan Davis.
00:53So I don't know that it's completely impossible to think they might move Jalen Carter for
00:56something.
00:56But the Raiders decided, no, they just wanted the draft picks and that was it.
01:00But when Oso was included in these talks and was brought up as somebody who might be
01:06heading to the Raiders, there was some chatter on social media about, man, I don't want to
01:10give up Oso and the picks or, you know, oh, I do that.
01:13I mean, look, I love Oso, but it's for Max Crosby.
01:16And I think a lot of people looked at it as, OK, well, that's just, you know, a means to
01:22an end.
01:22You want Max Crosby.
01:24And so you're willing to do whatever to go get him.
01:27Do the Yankees want to get rid of Alfonso Soriano?
01:30No, but you're getting Alex Rodriguez.
01:32So Alfonso Soriano, off you go.
01:34I think some people were looking at the Osa chatter like that.
01:37I don't know that that's not me.
01:39I don't know that that's the case for them.
01:42This is it.
01:42This is a full defensive tackle room now.
01:45And it's one that is now a three down lineman rotation when they're in their base, which
01:51is three, four defense.
01:54And D Magazine had written the other day an article called this from somebody named Rivers
01:58McCown.
01:59He'd written three's a crowd.
02:00How will the Cowboys new defense balance their star defensive tackles?
02:03And there was a lot of chatter, I think, early on this offseason about, well, you can save
02:08all this money by just letting Kenny Clark go.
02:11He's got 21 million that he's due.
02:13None of it is guaranteed.
02:14Why would you hold on to that?
02:15Just let him go or figure out something to do with his deal.
02:18And then everything's freed up.
02:20They have not out of all the switches that the Cowboys have flipped to this point.
02:23They have not touched their defensive tackle deals yet.
02:26They've let those just sit.
02:27They could create money by extension or, you know, restructure or whatever else.
02:33With all three of them.
02:34And they've decided not to mess with it yet.
02:37And I think that's because they don't know what switches they're flipping yet because
02:41they don't want to flip a switch on a guy and then move him.
02:44And I think that that might be Oso Diggizua.
02:48Did it stand out to you guys?
02:51Who's been more disappointing real quick after their new deal?
02:54Oso or Bland?
02:59Bland stands out to me more.
03:01Yeah.
03:02Probably because I had higher hopes.
03:04And easier to watch him.
03:06Absolutely.
03:07Oso played better.
03:10Bland had a stronger excuse built in.
03:14He was coming off of the injury.
03:16I don't think Oso was awful last year.
03:19Oso just didn't get better.
03:20And then he regressed a little bit.
03:22Yeah, been disappointing.
03:23He was solid.
03:24It was not anything that was ridiculous.
03:26It was just like, yeah, he was okay.
03:28But typically, he's been one of your better players every year.
03:31And he did get better as the year went on.
03:33Like when Quentin Williams got here, Oso started playing a lot better.
03:36That helps.
03:38But I think that when you look at the way that they're changing things and the way that Christian
03:44Parker wants to run defense, we were talking to him in Indy, did it stand out to you guys?
03:48I know we've talked about it off air, but did it stand out to you guys in the moment where
03:52when Brian was asking Christian Parker about the gap schemes and he's listing through it
03:57and then he goes, you know, when Quentin Williams was at Alabama, this is the style he played
04:04and had a lot of success in when he was running, you know, the mint fronts that Nick Saban has.
04:08Kenny Clark was the best I've ever seen in the league at it in Green Bay.
04:11When I was in Green Bay, Kenny Clark was the best nose tackle in the NFL playing this scheme, in
04:16my opinion.
04:18And so, yeah, that's what we play.
04:21Okay, got nothing on the gap and a half for Osa?
04:24I remember at the time just being like, that was a little odd.
04:27But I guess it's just he knows Quentin's done it.
04:29Maybe Osa's just not done it, so he doesn't have any commentary on it.
04:31And then the more you look at it and look at, okay, the way that they're going to structure the
04:36defensive line
04:37and how many reps are even available, even if you could say we like the player.
04:43I think Christian Parker likes Quentin Williams, obviously, but I think he likes Kenny Clark a little more.
04:49And then Osa Odigizua.
04:51Yeah.
04:51And so because of that, you're talking about, man, even if you can restructure it,
04:54it's a lot of money to have on the bench a lot and not doing what you need him to
05:01do.
05:02And if you go to a three-down look, Osa is a really good player.
05:06I think he's got a super high-energy individual.
05:09I remember years ago, a team was coming to town when Osa was a rookie,
05:14and I had known, I know a couple different people on different teams,
05:19and somebody had texted me the week they were getting ready to play Dallas, one of the players,
05:23and said, who the hell's 97 on their defensive line?
05:27He's like, I've never watched him before.
05:29I was like, it's Osa Odigizua.
05:31And he said, he's like, man, that dude, I don't know that there's anybody that plays harder
05:34than I've seen on tape this year.
05:36That guy, like, always goes.
05:38And that was kind of his MO for a long time was how aggressively he went,
05:41and he would have a tendency to burn out at times at the end of the season.
05:44But I think with this shift, the Cowboys are just looking at this and going,
05:49is this a total fit?
05:51Just like we were really gung-ho about Jadeveon Clowney until we weren't.
05:56Really gung-ho about Osa Odigizua until potentially they weren't,
06:01which I think is right now what they're trying to work through is,
06:04what can we justify keeping around here at the cost that it is
06:07when we're trying to rip open a window and we're trying to gain assets
06:10and do what we can to make this team better?
06:13And if he's not going to be out there consistently enough
06:15and we need linebackers and we need other things,
06:18what could we get on the market?
06:20And I guess that'll be the first thing I'm curious about for you guys.
06:22You are the trade value designators.
06:25Experts.
06:26Experts.
06:27What do you think Osa gets?
06:31He is, let me look at how old he is.
06:32What is he per year?
06:34He's, I believe, he's averaging 20.
06:36I'll say the best you get is a fourth.
06:39And he will be 28 in August.
06:43So a fourth?
06:44I'll say a fourth.
06:46That's the, yeah, I would say probably around the Gary deal.
06:51Okay.
06:52Would you, if that's the best he can get,
06:54are you saying that's more worth it to me than Osa at this point?
06:58Well, tell me if he's here on the roster,
07:01what percentage of the snaps does he play?
07:04How many snaps do you think he gets?
07:07Under 50.
07:08Under 50%?
07:10As it stands right now.
07:11Because it's not going to be the same sort of,
07:14defensive lines definitely rotate a ton.
07:17Yeah.
07:17I mean, even.
07:18Because then I got to weigh someone, you know.
07:20Injuries.
07:21Injury.
07:21Like, you know, like, if you're not in, if you're cap,
07:24if you're not trying, let's just say we get, like, you know,
07:27a couple of other week or so down the road,
07:29and they haven't, they still got the, you know,
07:33similar cap space to what they have now,
07:34and it's not going to hinder their cap,
07:37then there's no point in getting rid of him
07:39unless you're going to get high value pick.
07:41Let's trade him for a linebacker.
07:44Not Patrick Queen.
07:45You could try to, like, set up a player-for-player trade.
07:49You could try to trade for draft capital and to use that.
07:52The biggest thing here is just.
07:54Would you trade him for a fourth?
07:56If Christian Parker doesn't necessarily think he's a fit, probably.
08:00And then it's nothing to do with Osa.
08:01I think he's a good player.
08:02But if it's like, if he doesn't fit,
08:04then I need to get something.
08:05And who's my backup that replaces him
08:07that's on the roster right now?
08:10Who's under contract?
08:12Uh, nobody springs to mind.
08:15See?
08:15But, I mean, that's also the thing is that.
08:16Then you have a $20 million backup.
08:18That's the thing.
08:19If no one gets hurt.
08:20That's exactly the thing,
08:21is that you're looking at a group that you're then spending a bunch of money.
08:24The current guys on the roster right now,
08:27Solomon Thomas would probably be the backup.
08:29He's going to be more of a 3-4 edge here,
08:31but I would guess that he's somebody who operates as the backup.
08:35Jay Toye is here.
08:36That's one of their defensive linemen.
08:38But outside of that,
08:38that's really their only defensive tackle group right now.
08:41So, Solomon Thomas is a tweener.
08:43They could always go out.
08:44They could sign somebody.
08:45Yeah.
08:45They could make a move there.
08:47But the other aspect of this that I was curious about,
08:50you would agree,
08:51Osa's a decent player.
08:53Like, it's not like he's a black hole or anything like that.
08:55Yeah.
08:56What were we told,
08:58not only by Christian Parker,
08:59but, like, by the coaching staff in recent months,
09:02was,
09:03just bring us the good players.
09:05Just bring us the good players.
09:06Bring us the guys.
09:06We just want good players,
09:08and we'll find a role.
09:09Right.
09:09Is it at all concerning that we're about a month into this,
09:12and we're already going,
09:13this looks like two good players that you're saying don't fit.
09:17They just don't fit.
09:18It's not concerning.
09:18They just lied.
09:20Yeah.
09:20It's not concerning.
09:21They just gave us a company line.
09:23That's why Jadavion Clowney,
09:25we think,
09:25is not going to be around here.
09:27Every coach says.
09:27Is Sean Gary that much of a better drop and pass defender than Jadavion Clowney?
09:34Sean Gary can do a lot more stuff than Clowney can at this stage of his career.
09:38Okay.
09:39But the main job that he's asked to do,
09:42Clowney does really well,
09:43and he can do.
09:44Like,
09:44Trey Hendrickson,
09:45not going to drop in coverage.
09:47I was talking to somebody yesterday who was like,
09:49I just have a hard time saying I can't use a guy who got eight and a half sacks in
09:53the NFL last year.
09:54Yeah.
09:54I can't fit what I do.
09:56And plays the run.
09:58Every coach says we fit the scheme to the players.
10:01They all do.
10:01And I'll be 100% honest.
10:03The only guy I've seen do that come through town was Quinn.
10:06Quinn found if he had somebody who wasn't quite a good fit.
10:08All right.
10:09Well,
10:09you're going to move here.
10:10Micah,
10:11you're going to rush the passer.
10:12I know you were a linebacker first.
10:13We're moving this guy to corner.
10:14We're moving this guy to safety.
10:14Yeah.
10:15I'm not concerned about it.
10:16I just not going to believe when they say it.
10:18I like we called BS.
10:21So I,
10:22and I had,
10:23which is fine.
10:25Like you do have to have,
10:27I'm just,
10:27you got your guys,
10:28you got your guys,
10:29you got your,
10:29you do have to,
10:30you do,
10:30you know,
10:31run the system the way you want to run the system.
10:33I'm just not going to believe when you say,
10:35Oh,
10:35I want all the talented players.
10:37It's also like,
10:37are you really getting a gut,
10:38getting rid of a guy because you're changing schemes,
10:41but you're still going to be outside your base formation and 70 to 80% of the time.
10:48They'll be a nickel,
10:48but they're going to play like the front is going to be different.
10:51The way the style that they play is going to be different.
10:53And so that's going to be a change from,
10:54I don't know.
10:55I look at it like this.
10:56I think that as somebody had said to me,
10:59it's like,
10:59it's not necessarily.
11:02And don't get upset.
11:03Frisco over me using the word lie.
11:06Dress it down.
11:07Or here you go.
11:07This is the way to do it.
11:09This is exactly what I was,
11:10I was referencing here.
11:11Somebody said,
11:11no,
11:11it's not,
11:12it's not BS or anything else.
11:13It's nuance.
11:15Christian Parker says,
11:15I want good football players or Mike Zimmer says,
11:18I want good football players.
11:20And it's like,
11:21okay,
11:21well,
11:21what's a good football player.
11:22A good football player is the player that can do the things I ask them to do.
11:24Give me a great D lineman in the first round town that Christian Parker would not say draft because of
11:31his scheme.
11:33Oh,
11:36I don't know if is there Cassius how maybe,
11:40but it's Cassius.
11:41Howell is somebody who's a,
11:42he's just such a specialist from Texas A&M.
11:45I really like him,
11:46but he's a,
11:46he's a pass rusher.
11:47That's what he does.
11:48So if you look at him and go,
11:50yeah,
11:50you don't really do enough for me.
11:51I would wonder if that would give them any pause.
11:53If they go,
11:53you don't do enough versatile things for me to really like.
11:56But how is somebody who's,
11:58who's a little bit,
11:59maybe more specialized as a pass rusher,
12:02but I'm some of the other guys.
12:03I like Bain and Bailey.
12:04Like they are,
12:05they are well-rounded players,
12:06but they're also likely to go ahead of you.
12:08So also for a fourth,
12:10Bobby,
12:11get your fourth back that you just gave up for Gary.
12:14Probably.
12:15And I'm not,
12:16I don't know that I love the value,
12:18but it's also just,
12:18I think this is the reality of where they're at.
12:21And I think there's,
12:22I think there,
12:23there's a more than a,
12:25a slight chance that they are going to be having phone calls about.
12:28so diggy Zua well past the Crosby stuff.
