00:00You describe this as the biggest game in Newcastle's history.
00:04Is that a mental approach that you want everybody associated with,
00:07your players, your staff and the supporters to have growing up?
00:10Yeah, it is.
00:14Recent history, I don't know, someone could trip me up.
00:19Going way back, I'm sure they will.
00:21But I think recent history, for me it is,
00:24and I think that's very much the mentality we need.
00:26I think rising to the occasion, embracing the size of the game,
00:33I think these are things that have helped us this season
00:35and we're looking for the same again.
00:37Do you enjoy that sort of underdog role,
00:39kind of punching above your weight,
00:41where that tended to bring out the best in you in the four years?
00:44Well, I'm not playing, so...
00:47But yeah, I know what you mean.
00:49I think the underdog role, to a degree, in my time here,
00:53has helped us at times.
00:54When we've been in that position,
00:57where we feel the odds are stacked against us,
00:59and we're going to need to use every psychological tool
01:04that we can to help us in this game,
01:06because it's undeniable.
01:08We're playing a very, very good team.
01:11An outstandingly well-coached team, I have to say, as well,
01:13from having watched them thoroughly in both games,
01:15preparing for them, as we have done.
01:17They're a top team.
01:18Thank you. Keith Downey?
01:20An unusual situation that you're playing Barcelona
01:23for the second time this season,
01:25although that game feels a couple of seasons ago
01:27you've played so many games since then.
01:29What do you take from that first game
01:32that can help you get a positive result tomorrow?
01:35Yeah, quite a lot, Keith, I think.
01:36I think when you go through that experience,
01:40as we've said lots of times before,
01:42when you're playing the very best teams,
01:43I think you take a little bit of that game with you going forward,
01:47because I think there's so much to take from that.
01:49I thought that they played well, we played well,
01:51especially for the first half of the game.
01:54I thought we were right in it.
01:56Swung on sort of big moments in front of goal.
01:59They took theirs, we didn't take ours.
02:02But I think we can take a lot of confidence
02:03from our performance for the majority of the game
02:05and obviously take little bits away
02:08from what we needed to improve.
02:10Obviously Marcus Rashford scored two great goals
02:12on the night for them
02:13and we just switched off for a second
02:15and they punished us.
02:16What would be a positive result for you?
02:19Do you feel you need to take something there
02:20to have a chance of going through
02:22such a difficult place to be played?
02:24Well, I think they proved very recently
02:26against Atletico Madrid
02:27that probably the game's not going to be dead
02:32regardless of the outcome in this game.
02:34I think for us, we just have to focus on trying to win.
02:36I think you can't overthink it.
02:39Having watched both of those games,
02:40it was really intriguing.
02:42They obviously had a big deficit to try and claw back
02:44and they nearly got there.
02:45It was two really good games against Atletico.
02:47And again, I think their recent record on the league,
02:50they've been very consistent.
02:51Their style of play is consistent.
02:53So I think we know what we're going to face.
02:54Nisha Joshi.
02:56Hi Eddie.
02:57Tino Levermento has been a big absence this season.
03:00He's getting back to fitness.
03:01Is he fit enough to be in contention to start?
03:08He probably hasn't done enough training for me to feel 100% confident
03:13that he's in that best physical moment,
03:15especially for such a big game to start.
03:16But he's in our squad and anyone who's in that position obviously is in contention to play.
03:23So it's a delicate balance with Tino at the moment.
03:27He trained again this morning, obviously trained again on Friday
03:29and is in good spirits and is in a good place.
03:32He's a massive player for us.
03:33It's great to have him back.
03:35But obviously I've got to try and get the team selection right.
03:37And how do you balance wanting to take an advantage to that second leg
03:40with staying in the tie in the two-leg semi-final against Manchester City
03:44conceding the second goal so late with your camera?
03:48How do you balance it?
03:50Yeah, hopefully we can learn lessons from that tie.
03:55Yeah, we would just want to win the game and I think that's in our thoughts.
03:59But of course, there's another game to come.
04:01So you don't want to do anything foolish that can impact your chances of trying to get through.
04:05And ultimately that's the aim, regardless of this game, the away game,
04:10trying to get through is obviously the objective.
04:14Lee Ryder then, Craig Hall, please.
04:16Eddie, going into this game, there's obviously good memories of the PSG game
04:20when you started so well in that game getting in crunch titles early on.
04:24Are you going to have to do something similar in this game
04:26to set the tone from the very start?
04:29Yeah, a good start, I think, is really important.
04:34But as you saw against Manchester City at the weekend, it's not the be-all and end-all.
04:37Of course, you want to set the authority in the game.
04:41You want to show your opponent that you mean business,
04:43but we have to carry that through for the whole game.
04:46We have to be there at the end just as much as we are at the beginning.
04:50So I think we've had some great recent experiences to help us for the two-legged game.
04:55I think all our Champions League games have been a great dress rehearsal for this moment.
05:00I think that's how we have to look at it.
05:01Now is the moment where we need to be at our very best.
05:03At times against Man City, it was very difficult to actually get the ball off.
05:08How do you stop them from dictating Barca to go into this one?
05:12They've got a lot of similarities with Manchester City.
05:15As we found in the first game, that was one of the difficulties.
05:18Their midfield three were technically very good.
05:22They've got really good movements and rotations in their team.
05:26So stabilising off the ball, making sure we engage our press at the right times,
05:34and then making sure we keep the ball when we get it.
05:36These are all big things.
05:38We need to be a goal threat and we need our attacking players to fire.
05:43I'm going to ask you a question about Barcelona in 1997, just quickly in a second.
05:47First of all, that statement about this being the biggest game of attention in the club's recent history,
05:51is part of that motivated by the legend, legacy?
05:56This literally is Barcelona in a knockout game once in a lifetime stuff.
06:00The question came after an FA Cup game, the FA Cup comes around next year.
06:04Is it the one-off nature of this and the chance to write your name and the player's name in
06:07the club's history?
06:08Is that the allure and the romanticism which has sort of captured it?
06:12Yeah, to a point, yes.
06:14I think that we're also, there's only 16 teams left and we're one of them.
06:18So I think it's very much an opportunity to grab a moment that we may never get again.
06:26You don't know what life brings tomorrow, yet alone future seasons.
06:30We don't want to waste that opportunity, don't want to kick ourselves and think what ifs.
06:35So I think this is a moment for us to try and grab.
06:38Since my time here, just over four years, we've worked to get to this point.
06:45So, as long as we perform to our maximum, we'll have to accept the result.
06:48But we want to try and get as close as we can to our very best.
06:51In Bosnia in 1997, you were in your original professional at Bournemouth, it was live on ITV.
06:57Did you watch it? Can you remember when you were watching memories of that?
07:00Yeah, I watched the game. I don't remember where I was. I assume I was at home,
07:06but the memory is a bit hazy of that time of my life.
07:09I think I was very, very focused on my own playing career at the time and the early stages of
07:13that.
07:14But I think you couldn't not watch that moment on terrestrial TV.
07:17It was one of those legendary games.
07:21And of course, going back to your earlier question, we want people in future years to be talking about this
07:26team.
07:27And of course, Tino Asprey gets a hat-trick, mainly off Keith Gillespie's delivery on the right.
07:32And I'd want our players to be talked about in the same way 20, 30, 40 years later.
07:37Gentleman at the back.
07:38Yeah.
07:40I don't know how many references you take from the game back in September,
07:43but as the game progressed, Barcelona forced you a little bit into not a low block,
07:47but a deeper block, certainly.
07:49Looking back, do you feel that was an unavoidable consequence of their quality?
07:53Or was it something you went through with his form?
07:57Yeah, I think it's an unavoidable, or on the night, it was an unavoidable reaction to their quality.
08:02I think their midfield three on the day did really, really well to try and control the game
08:09and to make the game as they wanted it to.
08:11And I thought they were the standout players that really helped swing that game in their direction.
08:17So, of course, for us, we had our moments, as I say, especially in that first half,
08:20and opportunities to score that we didn't take.
08:23And ultimately, you sort of look back at the end of the game and you think they're the key moments
08:28in the game, because if we were able, went on top to score, I think that's the key thing.
08:31And even against Manchester City at the weekend, we got our noses in front,
08:35but we couldn't stabilise and push on.
08:38There's definitely parallels between that game and this game that we need to adjust and do better with.
08:44Gentleman, just in front, in the middle here.
08:45Yeah.
08:47Yes.
08:48Mm-hmm.
08:49Can I ask for him in Spanish?
08:51Absolutely.
08:52Okay.
08:55Okay.
09:17Gracias.
09:20I didn't get all of that question, I'm afraid.
09:23I'll try and answer what I think you're...
09:26So tell me if it's wrong.
09:28Yeah, he's an outstanding player.
09:31We obviously didn't face him in the first game, so I think it's a great challenge for us to try
09:36and deal with his qualities.
09:38He's been in outstanding form watching the recent games.
09:41I've been hugely impressed by him.
09:43So I think in the wide areas of both sides, they've got huge threats.
09:47We're going to have to defend very, very well and better than we did at the weekend in the wide
09:51areas.
09:52And then of course, as I said earlier, we have to bring our threats as well and we have to
09:56make sure that they're there in the game for us to win.
10:00Okay, thank you.
10:01Martin Hardy?
10:02I think the game against Boston in 1997 is regarded as one of the best atmospheres the stadium has ever
10:09had.
10:09Is your message to the supporters to recreate that tomorrow night?
10:13In an ideal world, yes, but of course, there's a reason why it was the best atmosphere or so-called
10:18best atmosphere that you say is because the team played so well.
10:22Scored three goals, could have scored more as well.
10:27Some brilliant attacking from the team and some late pressure from Barcelona.
10:33But that's why, because the team gave the crowd what it needed and that's what we have to do tomorrow.
10:38I think the start of the game against Barcelona here was, again, red hot.
10:42The atmosphere was incredible.
10:44We just couldn't carry it through.
10:45We couldn't do our bit to sort of confirm that up there with the previous game.
10:51So I think it's all on us.
10:53I know the crowd will be there when needed to help us.
10:57And how are the players getting through this new game?
11:02They're doing okay.
11:03They're doing okay.
11:04I think it's not been a perfect season for us.
11:08It's not been easy.
11:12But I think their attitude to it all has been really, really good.
11:16We're always trying to find new ways to improve and to evolve and to help the team.
11:23I think the players have taken that workload on and the consistency of it really well.
11:28We're going to need a big, big physical effort tomorrow.
11:30It's another short turnaround after a really big game against Manchester City where we had a lot of running to
11:36do.
11:36So it wasn't, again, ideal preparation for this one.
11:38But no excuses.
11:40The players will be ready.
11:42Gary Stonehouse.
11:43Hi, Eddie.
11:44Given every season since you've been in the club's broken new frontiers,
11:48you said this is the biggest game in recent history.
11:51Would it be your biggest achievement at the club if you can take Newcastle in for the last day?
11:56What's happened to you?
11:59Yeah, possibly.
12:00But I'm not really, well, I don't care about myself and sort of my record or what people think.
12:07It's for the club, really.
12:09I want the club to, desperate for the club to break new ground and to keep going in this competition,
12:15having worked so hard to get here.
12:16So it's, we're all thinking of the club.
12:19We're trying to support the players to give the best performance that we've given so far.
12:24And I think we're going to need to break new ground in terms of performance level.
12:27So if there's a time for us to be at our absolute best, it's in these two games.
12:33You spoke about having a lot of vertical maxed out after the Man U game.
12:38Julie, Anthony Gordon, Jacob Ramsey have rested for Man City.
12:42Just how's the squad looking, how are they doing?
12:44Yeah, I think we came through the Manchester City game OK, relatively OK.
12:49I think no fresh injuries.
12:52They've got a little bit of illness again in the camp, so it's been sort of hanging around in recent
12:58days.
12:59We'll have a player go down, but they're recovering quite quickly.
13:02So I anticipate, fingers crossed, we won't lose anybody.
13:05And it will be as we were with Tino Livramento back in the squad.
13:09You touched on it before, but Laminia Malenbarg tomorrow night.
13:12The Riss Hall also wasn't involved, but he was on the bench on you.
13:15So he gave it at the end of the season.
13:17How exciting the battle is that shaping up to be between the two of the best players in their positions
13:22in terms of young players?
13:25Yeah, I think providing on team selection, I think that will be an interesting battle between two really good players.
13:34As you say, there's a lot of intriguing battles across the pitch.
13:36When you look at the teams and you line them up and certainly sort of player for player,
13:42when you go up against the player, a respective player in that position, you've got to try and come out
13:45on top.
13:46And that's going to be my message to the group. We need to win our individual duels.
13:50We need to win the tussles in those big moments, because that could be a pivotal turn of the game.
13:56We're looking for one moment of magic from an attacking player.
13:58And of course, we've got to concentrate better defensively.
14:01OK, we've got time for one more. Damien Spellman.
14:04You were very patient in introducing him to the first team when he first came.
14:07How impressed have you been with his development since and where is he on his journey?
14:13I think he's done incredibly well. I think it was a steep sort of learning curve for him when he
14:19first came in,
14:19not just sort of on and off the pitch, but more in his personal life, having left his family home
14:24and all the challenges that go with that for someone being so young.
14:28I think with Lewis, he's one of those players that we forget how young he is at times.
14:32He's very quiet. He sort of goes about his business in a very uncomplicated way.
14:38But in that first season, he really had to show his resilient side.
14:41He had to do a lot of individual work, group work, development work to become the player he is today.
14:48And I think there's still a lot more to come from him.
14:50I think he's definitely on the right track.
14:52He's come back from a serious injury and he's beginning to find his very, very best form again.
14:57I think he's such an exciting player, one that I think will continue to go from strength to strength, we
15:02hope.
