00:00Hi!
00:00Take a journey with us from the moment a single sperm fertilizes an egg.
00:04From tiny egg to growing embryo, follow the incredible process of conception.
00:11Ovulation.
00:12Ovulation happens each month when a woman's ovaries release a mature egg.
00:16It happens about two weeks after the first day of their last menstrual period.
00:20Moving into the fallopian tube.
00:22After the egg is released from the ovary, it travels into the fallopian tube.
00:26It stays there until a single sperm fertilizes it.
00:29The sperm's long journey.
00:31A man may ejaculate 40 million to 150 million sperm, which start swimming upstream toward
00:36the fallopian tubes on their mission to fertilize an egg.
00:39Fast-swimming sperm can reach the egg in a half an hour, while others may take days.
00:44The sperm can live up to 48 to 72 hours.
00:48Only a few hundred will even come close to the egg because of the many natural barriers
00:52that exist in a woman's body.
01:00Sperm penetrates egg.
01:01It takes about 24 hours for a sperm cell to fertilize an egg.
01:05When the sperm penetrates the egg, the surface of the egg changes so that no other sperm can
01:10enter.
01:10At the moment of fertilization, the baby's genetic makeup is complete, including whether
01:15it's a boy or girl.
01:21The cells start to divide.
01:23The fertilized egg starts growing fast, dividing into many cells.
01:27It leaves the fallopian tube and enters the uterus three to four days after fertilization.
01:32In rare cases, the fertilized egg attaches to the fallopian tube.
01:36This is called a tubal pregnancy or ectopic pregnancy and is a danger to the mother.
01:41Pregnancy hormones.
01:42Within about a week of conception, a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin, HCG, can
01:49be found in the mother's blood.
01:50It is produced by cells that will become the placenta.
01:54The hormone will show up on a blood or urine pregnancy test at the doctor's office.
01:58Some home tests can detect pregnancy on the first day of your missed period.
02:04Implantation.
02:05After it gets to the uterus, the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus, called
02:10the endometrium.
02:11This process is known as implantation.
02:14The cells keep dividing.

02:27Baby's development.
02:28After the egg attaches to the uterus, some cells become the placenta while others become
02:33the embryo.
02:34The heart begins beating during week 5.
02:37The brain, spinal cord, heart, and other organs are beginning to form.
02:41At the 8th week the developing baby, now called a fetus, is well over a half inch long, and
02:47growing.
02:48A full term delivery generally happens around 40 weeks.
