03:49Let us swell, let us swell, let us swell, let us swell.
04:11Welcome, Kim, in just a little while. Now, remember this?
04:17Carmen, that's what this piece is about.
04:20Well, I think this is the perfect moment to bring in your new leading lady, new stage star.
04:25Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Kim Wilde.
04:32Look at this gorgeous dress!
04:41You look stunning, you look like Grace Kelly.
04:44I was expecting Tommy's mum to come in looking sort of angst-ridden, looking somewhat downtrodden, forget all that.
04:51Well, she does get quite angst-ridden, you know, she's got a lot on her plate, but she starts off
04:55at 19 and she only ages to 35.
04:58That's quite acceptable.
04:59It's totally acceptable.
05:00Right, now, did you get offered this part on a plate from Pete? Did he call you up one day
05:05and say,
05:05Hi, Kimmy, fancy playing Mrs. Walker? What happened?
05:09Well, I hadn't met Pete before this anyway.
05:11I got sent the script and the CD and I was immediately interested because I loved it as a kid.
05:16We had the album at home and I was a big fan of the album, so that's what drew me
05:20to it initially.
05:21And I was looking for a change and another challenge.
05:24And then they said, do you want to do the audition? So I went to the audition and that's the
05:27first time I met Pete.
05:29You had to actually audition for this role. Had you ever done an audition in your life before?
05:33No. I was terrified.
05:36Tell us, so Pete, you were there at the audition.
05:38She was stunning.
05:40You looked bored, you did, I have to say.
05:43No, that's the chess player's face that one has to have at auditions because you don't want to really give
05:51too much away to anybody really.
05:52And you want the person that's doing the audition to feel that they've done it and not somebody that's sitting
05:56there kind of going, yeah, Katie's great.
05:59And you were stunning, I think.
06:01I mean, really quite moving, I found it, because it was quite obvious from the minute that Kim walked in
06:06that she was going to be able to act.
06:09And that that's the thing, everybody knows she can sing, everybody knows that she's wonderful looking and can move and
06:14everything and has an auspicious career behind her.
06:18But it's just this question mark, can she act? And it was quite clear that she can act very well.
06:22And we'll get better.
06:23Is this going to mark a whole change of direction for you in life? Do you think that you'll always
06:29want to act after this as well as sing?
06:33I really don't know.
06:34You'll wait to see how it goes.
06:35Yeah, I don't think about it. I didn't sort of do this as a sort of, as a sort of
06:40way of, what's the word I'm looking for?
06:42It wasn't like a career move. It's not a career move. I'm doing it because I love Tommy and I
06:46want to be in Tommy and because I love singing.
06:48And, you know, I'm not sort of doing it to try and get somewhere else. I'm doing it because I
06:52want to be here right now.
06:53Now, we keep reading in the press that, that you are, you are feeling very good about life at the
06:59moment.
07:01It's, it's been said, I quote, I don't know if it's true that you feel like you're reaching the peak
07:05of your life right now.
07:07Yeah.
07:07Why is that happening now, Kim? What's, what's made that happen now for you?
07:11I think, you know, I had, I got famous very young. I was 20 and I worked very hard at
07:16my career until I was 30.
07:18And I very, I focused very much in on my career. And, um, I realized that around about 30 that
07:23I focused too much on my career.
07:25And in the last five years, I've, I've set out to, to balance my life. And, um, I've achieved that
07:30in various different ways.
07:32I won't go on about it, but I have. And now there's a balance and now my career means more
07:36and I enjoy it more.
07:36My life means more. And the, the two sort of complement each other.
07:40Now, you, you both have, Pete, you were saying about your own musical background. Obviously, Kim, your, your background is
07:48exactly the same.
07:48Very, very musical. Then you both went off to art college for a while and then came back to music.
07:54I'm sure.
07:54I mean, it, there's sort of parallel lines here. How important is, is, is, was family involvement to you both?
08:02How important was it to you?
08:03It was very important to me. And I'm sure it's important to Kim, too, even today.
08:07Mm. Mm. And to you as well, Kim. Mm-hmm.
08:10So they'll all be there on the first night?
08:12They'll probably be there every night next year, sir. They'll be living in the theatre.
08:17They'll be bloody well-paying.
08:22It's true. And can I, I'd just like to add that I...
08:25See what's happened to me? I've become cynical.
08:28Oh, no. I just, I just would like to remind all my friends that I do have to pay for
08:32all the tickets.
08:33So stop asking me for freebies. They'll be terrible.
08:36They'll just kind of like further say, hello, I'm Kim.
08:39No, I, I see because the whole family, you know, you've got much, much younger sister, I know that.
08:43It's a family show. It's a show that you, I mean, you've already given that impression that you've almost rounded
08:48it off,
08:48not pointed it off, but, but given it a much more broad approach by putting in an extra song, for
08:54example.
08:55Is it something that everybody's going to be able to come along and relate to in some way,
09:00whether you're a mother or a child or whatever?
09:03I think so. Absolutely, without doubt. I mean, for me as a child, it worked at all kinds of levels,
09:08almost like a sort of fairy story, and I didn't really understand some of the complexities
09:11and some of the dark moments of it when I was 12 or 13, but I was very drawn to
09:16it.
09:16It had a lot of passion, a lot of power, a lot of mystery.
09:19And, um, so I think, you know, for young people it, you know, it will be enchanting and mysterious,
09:24and for older people, of course, they'll enjoy listening to those fantastic songs again.
09:29And there are some superb actors and actresses.
09:31How are rehearsals going? It's beautifully directed and staged and just, it's gorgeous.
09:36Are you enjoying it then? Yeah, yeah.
09:38It's a real feast of, of, of delight. It's gorgeous.
09:43Yeah. Yes.
09:44As, as rehearsals progress, how much are you looking forward to or feeling a bit daunted about the first night?
09:54Eek.
09:56It's a bit eekish. I don't think about that.
09:58I mean, is it more eekish than, say, the first night of a tour?
10:01I mean, the first night when you were out there with Michael Jackson or whatever.
10:05Is it actually happening?
10:06Probably the same thing. I was terrified the first time I, um, opened for Michael Jackson.
10:09I was terrified the first time that I hosted a TV show.
10:12It would be, I'll be terrified.
10:14That's probably brilliant.
10:15I wish you, I wish you luck.
10:18That'll be fine.
10:19That's probably.
10:20Oh, don't get too gushing now. You'll spoil all that stuff at the audition.
10:23All that, Mr. Laidback at the audition.
10:25Mm.
10:25Well, we're gonna hear the new song.
10:28A bit of a premiere exclusive that we have today.
10:31Yeah.
10:31Uh, in a little while.
10:33But, thanks for the moment, ladies and gentlemen.
10:36Pete Townsend, Kim Wilde.
10:44Well, it's Trader's quiz time now.
10:46Oh, now.
10:47The British premiere of a number specially written for the stage production of Tommy.
10:51Please welcome Kim Wilde and Alistair Robbins with I Believe My Own Eyes.
11:03This can't continue.
11:06It makes no sense.
11:08We're getting nowhere.
11:10I've lost all my confidence.
11:12The boy wants something.
11:13I'm satisfied.
11:15He needs attention.
11:18And care our love can provide.
11:22And then there's the matter of us.
11:26I'd like to prove that I don't think that you've seen the best of me.
11:34I've stood up for the boy, and I've clung to the hopes and the lies.
11:42I wish that the pain in your gaze could again be a test of me.
11:50But when I look in the mirror, I believe my own eyes.
11:57I believe my own eyes.
12:02No, I've come to the end.
12:04All my patience is gone.
12:06When I'm doubtful, I tend to believe my own eyes.
12:17I'd like to declare this devotion and care is a life to live.
12:25That nothing has changed, and the time isn't passing us by.
12:33But I have to say here, that for us, there's a clear-cut alternative.
12:42When we look at each other, we believe our own eyes.
12:49I believe my own eyes.
12:53No, I've come to the end.
12:55All my patience is gone.
12:57When I'm doubtful, I tend to believe my own eyes.
13:10This has gone far enough.
13:14After all we've been through.
13:18We can't believe we've done all we can humanly do.
13:25It's a time to be tough.
13:29A time to be wise.
13:33We must stop chasing false dreams and recover our lives.
13:40I believe my own eyes.
13:44No, I've come to the end.
13:46All my patience is gone.
13:48When I'm doubtful, I tend to believe.
13:51I'd like to believe that I don't feel that we've seen the best of us.
13:59And the way to believe is to see where the real future lies.
14:07I hope that the pain in your gaze can again be a test of us.
14:14And when I look in the mirror, I believe my own eyes.
14:22Let's believe our own eyes.
14:27No, I've come to the end.
14:29All my patience is gone.
14:31Let's admit we intend to believe our own eyes.
14:44To believe our own eyes.
14:50One way that we knew how it would be nice.
15:07Now there will come up again.
15:08For the future of Freddie W serve James,
