00:00Death is just a part of life, and it's an element that definitely is not shied away from in the
00:06galaxy far, far away. Nasty pieces of work have had their faces satisfyingly melted off before
00:12dying. Much-loved legends have peacefully passed on to the other side. And then you have those more
00:19messed up deaths. So I am Gareth, this is What Culture Star Wars, and here are the 10 most
00:25messed up deaths in the Star Wars original trilogy. 10. Anyone who fell into the Sarlacc Pit
00:31Now let's be honest, pretty much everyone that ended up being swallowed by the creepy
00:35Sarlacc on Tatooine deserved the horrible end that they got. But that doesn't change the
00:39fact that said form of death was still all kinds of messed up. You see, it wasn't simply
00:44a case of landing in the beast's mouth, being chewed up into little pieces and then ultimately
00:50digested, like, you know, what normally happens when you're eaten. Yes, I know that still wouldn't
00:54be much fun, but it sounds a lot less agonising and intense than being dropped into one of
00:59its stomachs without being chewed, and then slowly digested due to its weak stomach acid.
01:05Before folks started falling into the Sarlacc in Episode 6, Return of the Jedi, Jabba the
01:10Hutt even claimed that victims would find a new definition of pain and suffering as they
01:14were gradually broken down over 1,000 years within the creature. Again, these various goons
01:21and guards likely got what was coming to them, but that brief look within the carnivore's belly in
01:26the Book of Boba Fett confirmed that this was certainly up there as one of the more disturbing
01:30ways to go in the Star Wars franchise.
01:32Number 9, The Rancor Falls In Front Of Their Owner
01:35When this gigantic monster first growled its way onto the big screen, well, viewers were made to fear
01:42it. With its long, grotesque hands, mouth full of sharp teeth, and deafening roar, it looked like
01:48Luke Skywalker would have a tough job trying to stay alive long enough to save his friends from
01:53Jabba the Hutt. However, shortly after the Jedi managed to not only survive, but kill the frightening
01:58animal in Return of the Jedi, something unexpected happened. Luke's actions went from being brave to
02:04quite horrendous, really. Just after the Rancor's demise, the caretaker of the palace arrived and was
02:10immediately hit with a wave of emotion. His precious Petisa, that was this monster's name,
02:16had been brutally murdered by this strange man, with a devastated Malakili unable to do anything
02:22but watch as the lifeless animal he'd cared for lay in a heap, crushed under a gate.
02:27If that isn't heartbreaking enough for you, it turns out that Malakili also planned to one day escape
02:33with the Rancor, and even became suicidal for a time in the wake of her tragic end, though he would
02:38at least eventually find purpose in his life again as a restaurant owner, so that's something.
02:43What Star Wars moment do you feel is the saddest of all time? Is it the death of Petisa or
02:48is it
02:48something else? You let me know in the comments below.
02:51Number 8, ATM is pulled apart.
02:54Keeping within the opening stretch of Episode 6 Return of the Jedi for this next entry, but this
02:59time turning our attention towards the mechanical folks in the galaxy far, far away. After C-3PO and R2-D2
03:05are gifted to Jabba the Hutt as part of the plan to rescue Han Solo, the droids are introduced to
03:10EV-99, who was the supervisor of the crime lord's droid pool. She'd also oversee the torture of
03:18various droids being held captive here, with poor ATM being one of the machines that was horrifically
03:24put through hell on screen. After upsetting Jabba, this protocol droid was ripped apart slowly by a
03:30torture rack, his limbs being shockingly yanked off right in front of the Hutt's newest interpreter,
03:363PO. Had this been a humanoid creature, there is no way that George Lucas and Richard Marquand
03:41would have gotten away with such a barbaric end in a film designed for viewers of all ages to enjoy.
03:46But the fact this was just a droid being awfully torn to pieces meant they could really show off just
03:52how merciless and cruel Jabba and his allies were early on in the final original trilogy movie.
03:577. The Grim End Of Both Tauntauns
04:01Early on in the middle chapter of the original trilogy, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo are seen
04:06riding some mighty tauntauns across the snow on Hoth. But within the first five minutes of the movie,
04:12the former steed had already been savagely slaughtered, cut down by a womper before Luke
04:17could check out the Imperial probe that had just landed on the planet. It is a startling moment that
04:22sets the darker tone of episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back immediately, with Luke sweetly asking
04:28his tauntaun ribber if she could smell something one second and being viciously killed the next.
04:34Oh, and the tauntaun that was apparently pregnant at the time was then eaten by the snow monster too.
04:40Lovely. Fast forward to when Solo eventually discovers Luke post-womper escape, and yet another
04:45tauntaun suffers a quite grim end. After dying due to the freezing temperatures outside, Solo coldly slices
04:52open his animal, Murrah, and stuff Skywalker within it, feeling this was the only way to keep Luke warm.
04:59It did exactly that, sure, but in an unquestionably messed up way. Making the whole thing even more
05:03horrendous, it turns out that Murrah was actually Reba's mother too, meaning she died whilst looking
05:09for her own kid in the snow. 6. That One Fallen Ewok
05:14They may not have been the most universally adored addition to the galaxy far, far away back in 1983,
05:19but even those who utterly despised the arrival of the Ewoks likely couldn't help but be moved by one
05:26rather effed up teddy bear death. During the epic battle of Endor that brought the original trilogy to
05:31an end, these brave furballs risked their lives to take the fight to the Empire. Many managed to make it
05:38to the joyful celebrations that followed the Rebels' victory over the Imperial forces, but some were not
05:43quite so lucky. The most harrowing example of an Ewok's life being taken in Return of the Jedi occurs
05:49midway through that fight amidst the trees, as a number of them try to flee from an incoming ATSD.
05:55Unfortunately, one little hero, known as Nanta, wasn't quite able to evade a blast from its cannons,
06:01something their pal Rhomba soon devastatingly realised. Choosing to linger on this small moment of
06:07heartbreaking loss really hammered home just how brutal and harsh war can truly be, even in a
06:13family friendly galaxy. Watching a crushed Rhomba trying to shake his fallen pal awake here will
06:19never not be one of the more unexpectedly distressing and impactful moments in all of Star Wars. I'm
06:24still not over it. 5. All of Alderaan is Wiped Out
06:36An entire planet's worth of people being suddenly blown to smithereens is already about as dreadful
06:43and messed up as it gets. But what made the destruction of Alderaan and the people on that
06:47world even more appalling was the way this awful event went down. After attempting to save her home
06:53from being destroyed by the Death Star during 1977's Star Wars by lying about the whereabouts
06:59of the Rebel base, Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin revealed his own lie. Instead of sparing the
07:04lives of the people of Alderaan in exchange for this information, Tarkin just went ahead and
07:09demonstrated the power of the space station anyway. In a moment that no doubt traumatised poor Leia,
07:15she was forced to watch as the super weapon's laser tore through a planet her own adoptive parents
07:21were on. Her twin brother would at least avenge the millions of murders later on by taking out
07:26both the Death Star and Tarkin within it, but that still didn't bring back all those who perished
07:31whilst casually just going about their daily lives on the peaceful planet.
07:35And before 3PO gets destroyed for a bit, before he'd eventually watch poor ATM be destroyed in front of
07:42his very own lit up eyes, C-3PO himself actually experienced a similarly horrible situation in the
07:48Empire Strikes Back. 3PO would ultimately be brought back to life thanks to some Chewbacca repairs of
07:54course, but that didn't change the fact that his body being scattered around Bespin was still alarming
07:59in the moment. Being the curious soul that he is, 3PO decided to take a closer look when he heard
08:04what
08:04sounded like an R2 unit in Cloud City. It was here when the droid learned the hard way that Imperial
08:10Stormtroopers were very much on Bespin too, with those soldiers blasting him to pieces.
08:15Watching any supporting hero's arms, legs and head be separated from their body is hugely upsetting.
08:23Also, a distraught Chewbacca having to then fend off Ugnaught to retrieve his golden pal,
08:28who may have been irreparable for all he knew, just made the whole thing even more distressing.
08:333. Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru are burned alive
08:36Though he very much wanted to get off the sandy rock he called home during the opening stages of
08:431977's Star Wars, Luke Skywalker still needed a bit of a push to leave Tatooine behind.
08:48Well, he got exactly that, in the most horrific way imaginable. After telling Obi-Wan Kenobi that he
08:53couldn't come with him to deliver R2 to Alderaan and learn the ways of the Force because his family
08:58needed him on the desert world, Luke realised that that same family were now in danger. The team had
09:04discovered that the Jawas who sold R2 and 3PO to Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru had been attacked by
09:10stormtroopers, so Luke assumed this meant they were probably heading to his home next. Sure enough,
09:16that's precisely what happened, but nothing could prepare Luke for what he would find once he got
09:20back there. With the homestead being set on fire by the savage Imperial troops, all that was left of
09:26Owen and Beru were their charred skeletal remains. This film is rated U in case you were wondering.
09:32Now, this graphic image of his loved ones having their flesh burned off was enough
09:36to convince him to leave this world behind, sure, but that nightmarish visual also most
09:41likely scarred him and children watching this space opera for life in the process.
09:462. Darth Vader Snaps A Neck In The Opening Scene
09:49George Lucas established that his galaxy far, far away was both an awe-inspiring and terrifying place
09:56early. Like opening sequence early. During that iconic 1977 introduction to the Star Wars universe,
10:03an absolutely brutal act let viewers know that the big guy dressed in black known as Darth Vader was
10:09not to be messed with. After making his way onto the Tantive IV ship, the Chosen One gripped a poor
10:14bloke called Captain Remus Antilles by the neck. Anyone else in this scenario would likely have given the
10:20Sith Lord exactly what he wanted right there and then. Antilles, however, remained loyal to both
10:25the Rebel Alliance and Leia Organa, lying to Vader's face or mask when asked where the Death Star plans
10:32were. Spoilers, it didn't end too well for him. Hearing the life be squeezed out of Antilles as he
10:37tried to convince Vader this was simply a consular ship on a diplomatic mission was already seriously
10:42vicious stuff. But things were then taken up an unhinged notch when a frustrated Vader suddenly
10:48opted to snap the loyal Rebel's neck and effortlessly chuck him to one side. Complete with dreadful sound
10:55effect. Star Wars, a family friendly story full of hope, love, adventure and neck breaks?
11:011. Porkins and Biggs are shot down trying to keep their pals safe
11:06Now for an entry dedicated to the unsung heroes of the Rebel Alliance.
11:11Those rebel pilots who were not the first names on everyone's lips when talking about the good
11:16guys and gals of the original trilogy, but who paid the ultimate price when trying to put an end to
11:21the Empire. Just look at the attack on the Death Star in 1977's Star Wars. This may have been the
11:27assault that saw Luke Skywalker save the day and destroy that first space station, but it was one
11:33that involved both Jack Porkins and Luke's best mate Biggs Darklighter being cruelly and abruptly shot
11:38down too. The former meets a nasty end just trying to cover the latter, insisting on doing his duty
11:45despite being told to pull up. A few other rebels also sadly failed to avoid being blasted by TIE
11:50fighters during the perilous flight, but it was Biggs death that really felt like the most brutal of
11:55blows. After finally reconnecting with his mate, Luke is forced to listen to that same friend be blown
12:01up by Vader as he tried to keep him safe during the trench run. Because Skywalker hadn't already
12:06gone through enough in this movie. Elsewhere in the original trilogy, good old Dak found himself
12:11dealt a pretty barbaric hand in Episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back as well. Being first shot to
12:16death in a speeder on Hoth before his corpse was then crushed by an AT-AT foot. How nice. And
12:22they're
12:22just a few examples of brave rebels being often given a quite disturbing end to their time in the
12:28galaxy far, far away. They are gone, but not forgotten.
