00:00Most people don't realize just what goes into creating peace games.
00:03Each one of our sets use hundreds of cameras, petabytes worth of footage.
00:07We have a little army of editors using some of the highest quality tech on the planet
00:12and mixing in VFX with real contestants and unscripted content.
00:16Making this show happen is harder than you could ever imagine,
00:19and I'm giving Sam & So Crispy unrestricted access to show you guys everything.
00:22Have fun!
00:24Left alone with 5 million.
00:26This video is going to take you through it all.
00:28The sets, the tech, the teams behind it all, and the struggles.
00:33But for context, our story with MrBeast begins years ago.
00:37Their first time ever using VFX.
00:40We quickly followed that up with several projects with their team.
00:46Reveal.
00:51Each one growing larger than the last.
00:53Back then, the sets were smaller, and the VFX tasks were bigger.
00:57Build the magic to help elevate production value.
01:04But walking on set this time around, the scale is monumental.
01:08They didn't need to recreate pillars like last season.
01:11They just built them 40 feet in the air.
01:16Did you know that all this work is only for 20 minutes of screen time?
01:19Oh, yeah.
01:20This is Brendan, the VFX supervisor on the first few episodes.
01:23And you may recognize him because he's also on our team.
01:26So you're going to want to watch this section because we're going to show you how, just like in season
01:30one,
01:30you can change a shot like this into this.
01:35And then we're going to be able to compare it to how it changes in season two.
01:38Unlike doing a movie, this is unscripted reality television.
01:41So you never really know what you're going to get, and that means you've got to be prepared.
01:44There's a reason that no one else is doing anything like this.
01:47So you've got to over-prepare, and the first step is pre-vis.
01:49We talk about this a lot.
01:51It's a preview of what you're going to make, so everyone is on the same page.
01:54And fun fact, we actually did pre-vis for season one of The Last of Us.
01:59It's crazy because how much the tech has changed.
02:01We still use mocap when a project calls for it,
02:04but now there are solutions to keep you moving that don't necessarily need a full setup.
02:08Now all you have to do is have a camera.
02:11I'm the actor in the shot here.
02:12I'm on this huge pillar freaking out.
02:15Whoa, that is really high up.
02:17And then all we have to do is upload that to Autodesk Flow Studio.
02:20It analyzes the animation.
02:22We get a camera track with the animation of the character.
02:26And then we're able to throw it in our pre-vis software.
02:28We're able to dial everything in.
02:30We're also in an industry standard software to then take this shot to final.
02:34So not only do we have pre-vis to show everyone,
02:36but we also have a final look development shot.
02:39And now you can take this all over to the production.
02:41But these floors go 40 feet in the air,
02:44so we're over here questioning how much VFX do they actually need.
02:48So the very first episode of season two brought us to Las Vegas.
02:53This is surreal.
02:54You can almost like kind of feel the set moving around.
02:57And with a huge set like this, the needs are complicated.
03:00It takes a lot of cameras.
03:02We counted just about 400.
03:04And they all feed off-site where the decision makers are.
03:09This is all for 20 minutes of content.
03:10Is that insane to you?
03:12Honestly, I'm used to it at this point.
03:14We almost do it regularly.
03:16You know, I've done a lot of the 1 to 100 videos.
03:18We have, you know, near 400 cameras, 250 cameras on a regular basis.
03:22And we do it for 20 minutes of content.
03:24It's the beauty of it.
03:25So what we have here is the Arri Alexa 265.
03:28This is Arri's newest camera that's out there.
03:32And we got Carl, too.
03:33Oh, my bad.
03:34This is, you know, the latest and greatest noise maker.
03:40Just the body alone, they're estimating, would be around $300,000.
03:44Oh, that's wild.
03:44Do you want to say something?
03:46I got a question.
03:47Yes.
03:47How expensive is this camera?
03:49If we want a background lens, monitors, body, batteries, we're looking over $400,000.
03:55$400,000.
03:56Yeah.
03:56I got a question.
03:57Yeah.
03:58How long have you been a cameraman?
04:00Since 2013.
04:01So 12 years?
04:02A lot of years.
04:03How many times have you...
04:04What are you doing?
04:05You're just hijacking my interview here.
04:07All right.
04:08I'm still tripping Paul.
04:09Honestly, Nolan, just start doing all the interviews for us.
04:12That was pretty good.
04:14Honestly, it was pretty good.
04:15All right.
04:15So we got a $400,000 cinema camera shooting a show that's going to come out faster because
04:20their production is so much faster than any other movie that's shooting with this same camera.
04:24Yes.
04:24So it's going to be the first production to use the newest tech on The Beast Show.
04:28As they got closer to starting, we started to talk about the difficult VFX challenges.
04:33The original goal was to make these falls in the show higher and further, like this.
04:41And here's how that would work.
04:42Well, all the contestants are wearing the same outfit.
04:44So we build that digital asset, and we switch their faces up depending on who's falling,
04:48and we can digitally extend them at a certain point to make it look like that digital double
04:52takes over and completes the fall.
04:54A lot of movies do this already.
04:56They'll have this crazy scene.
04:57Instead of falling 10 feet, they fall 100 feet.
05:00That was the original plan, but then things changed to avoid CGI.
05:05All of a sudden, VFX is a little limited where it's actually just done practically.
05:08We really wanted to create something that the camera just captured, so we didn't have
05:12to make it seem like it's in the air or, you know, it was an all-white room.
05:16Like, we just did it.
05:17The Olympics, the Olympics we were on together, and you can see, like, when we built that,
05:20we wanted to raise it higher, right?
05:22So everything that we've done previously, we always think, like, how do we elevate it?
05:26We're now in a phase of, let's see how practical we can get everything.
05:29But you can't always plan for everything, like Mother Nature.
05:34Vegas is windy.
05:36We're in there, and we're in a tent.
05:40Yeah, I was getting scared.
05:42This thing must be, I mean, they got a ton of concrete blocks holding this thing down,
05:45but this thing's catching so much wind.
05:47I'm a little worried.
05:48It's impossible to fully avoid it.
05:50Hidden CGI to help with the wind, polish, and set extensions.
05:53These were hundreds of shots.
05:56Who's ready for season two of B-Skinning?
05:59But the goal to minimize VFX and maximize practical continued, and it was impressive.
06:03Like the world's largest LED floor, and this entire city built for the contestants.
06:08Now with production over, the footage needs to be edited, and that happens at B-Studios.
06:15So things here have changed a lot.
06:17This is wild.
06:18And part of the behind the scenes here is like, oh my god.
06:21What is it like running parallel processes here of, like, having your channel,
06:26but also you guys are working on one of the biggest, the biggest, unscripted reality TV show,
06:30and you're running it this season from here.
06:32Yeah, I mean, it's a lot.
06:34Not only that, we also have the gaming channel.
06:36We also do videos on the Lanthi channel.
06:37We do videos on our MrBeast2 channel.
06:39We have to keep up with shorts, as you know, because that's the new trending thing,
06:42and TikTok, and it's a lot.
06:45So, now that season two is wrapped, we have over 750 days worth of content.
06:50So much so that we had to move the server room,
06:53and I actually haven't even seen our new server room yet.
06:55It's in here.
06:58Check out this bad boy.
07:01So, I'll be honest, you probably know way more about this than me.
07:04What are you looking at?
07:05We're looking at 8.9 petabytes of usable data.
07:09Okay.
07:10And I've been told you can maybe, at best, fit four seasons of your show on this.
07:14So, you might have to upgrade soon.
07:16If you don't realize this, season one of Beast Games,
07:18we broke the world record for the most camera cable ever laid, ever in a production.
07:23You use a thousand cameras, that means you need all this cabling.
07:25That means you need a bigger control room.
07:27That means you need more storage, which means you need more computers,
07:30for more editors, for more this, for more that.
07:33You know, every hundred cameras we add is theoretically millions more in expenses.
07:36And we're going to see how it all gets edited.
07:38All right.
07:39Let me know what you find.
07:40I'm going to go back to filming.
07:41Film whatever you want.
07:42I don't care.
07:43So, I went to see the editors.
07:46What's going on, guys?
07:48Hey!
07:49Inside was a classic hardworking team.
07:52Papers all over the wall and even some drawings.
07:54It reminded me exactly of some of our other projects.
07:58Let me close the door so I can speak honestly.
08:01These are literally, without a doubt, the best editors on the planet.
08:04Now, lots of people worked remote, but these five are in office and also work on the main channel.
08:08Honestly, so much time is cooked through just waiting for your computer to autosave
08:14because these projects are so massive.
08:16Every single person here has an extremely artistic brain
08:20and they come up with concepts and graphics and themes for their scenes
08:23that are purely fueled by their own artistic intentions.
08:27This is the biggest difference of this team.
08:29They're from YouTube.
08:31And when you're a YouTuber, you learn to do everything from filming to editing to visual effects.
08:36You're a jack of all trades.
08:37That's, I mean, that's the part of this job that's insane.
08:40It's like you, you find talented people and that's not necessarily 20 years of experience all the time.
08:45Despite having some of the best TV editors in the world,
08:49they just don't know how to do what it is we do on main channel that gives it such a
08:53unique flair.
08:54And one of the cheat codes is using visual effects for their explainer graphics.
08:58So the Beast team does these infographics, like this and this, very quickly.
09:04And they do them with only like two guys.
09:05And I thought to myself, we've got Dylan and Josh here.
09:08We should challenge them to put together one similar to Beast games.
09:11And I'm only going to give them like two hours to do it.
09:13Like today?
09:14Provide a visual, show the game and show the rules, right?
09:19All right.
09:19So we have our idea.
09:20We're going to match the dodgeball game in the show.
09:24This is going to show just how much work goes into making one of these.
09:27But we also have the software to use from earlier in this episode.
09:31I mean, that's all it took.
09:32Just some footage and we're going to put it into Autodesk Flow Studio.
09:35And then we should be able to bring it directly into Maya.
09:37Josh is going to do some additional animation and make it just look super pretty.
09:41I'm excited to see what you guys come up with.
09:46All right.
09:46It's a moment of truth.
09:55Oh, whoa.
09:56That looked great, guys.
09:57Wow.
09:58So we had our secret weapon.
09:59Josh Cubitt here made a custom character model.
10:01And that kind of made it the final cherry on top.
10:04I think the big advantage of this is all the technology allows you to just focus on the art.
10:08So this is what goes into thousands of hours of work when you span across Beast Games.
10:12This debate of practical versus CGI is often just marketing, but it's a massive flex for what they've done for
10:18real.
10:19And as a YouTube team making cinematic content, it's amazing to work with another YouTuber making the largest unscripted reality
10:25television show ever made.
10:28Thanks for watching and subscribe.
