01:22because I had a couple of short films shown in the first few festivals.
01:24We saw new work from great filmmakers like Luis Buñuel,
01:30Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Nagisa Oshima,
01:33so many remarkable movies
01:35that we were all just enthralled
01:38by the movies coming from all over the globe in those days.
01:42And as we went and absorbed those pictures,
01:45we were receiving an education.
01:49It wasn't the reverse.
01:50We didn't set out to make a study of anything.
01:53We were immersed and entranced and on fire,
01:58and the education just naturally followed.
02:03And that's the way it is when you're pursuing an obsession,
02:06when you're going where you're drawn to go, where you have to go,
02:10as opposed to where you think it might be fun to go
02:13or where you think you should go.
02:16So if you're intrigued by moviemaking as a career,
02:21this isn't a class for you.
02:23But if you need to make movies, a movie,
02:26if you feel like you can't rest until you've told this particular story
02:31that you're burning to tell and moving images and sounds,
02:35then it could be speaking to you.
02:38Because that's who I was when I started making pictures
02:41and when I made Mean Streets and showed it here in this theater
02:44for the first time to the public and the New York Film Festival audience in 1973.
02:50So I'm going to be speaking personally,
02:52and that's the only way I can speak about making movies.
02:55I'm not going to give you a blueprint.
02:58There are no shortcuts.
03:00I'm going to give you some practical advice along the way,
03:03but the most important thing I can convey to you
03:06is that you always have to find your own way.
03:11You can be inspired.
03:12You can learn about cameras and sound equipment, editing tools,
03:15but in the end, it's just you.
03:20And that's what you have to guard.
03:22That's what's precious.
03:25I'm Martin Scorsese, and this is my master class.
