00:08President Bill Clinton, President Joe Biden, and the South Side's own President Barack Obama.
00:28What a joy it is for us to be here today to celebrate the life of greatness.
00:59It is an honor to join you today to celebrate the Reverend Jesse Lewis Jackson.
01:09A man who, when the poor and the dispossessed needed a champion and a country needed healing,
01:21stepped forward again and again and again and said, send me.
01:34And so that day, we've been talking about Jesse telling us we are somebody.
01:46I am somebody.
01:51And he wasn't just talking to young black boys like Isaiah, though he loved them fiercely.
02:00He wasn't just talking to young black girls to help them believe, though he believed in them.
02:10He was talking about everyone who was left out, everyone who was forgotten, everyone who was unseen, everyone who was
02:20unheard.
02:20And in that sense, he was expressing the very essence of what our democracy should be.
02:30The ideals at the very heart of the American experiment.
02:35The belief that regardless of what we look like or how we worship, regardless of where our ancestors come from
02:44or how much money we got, we're all part of the American family.
02:49We're all endowed with the same inalienable rights to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
02:55We're all obligated to answer the call and step forward and take responsibility for making wrongs right and for caring
03:04for our neighbors and bringing the reality of America a step closer to its glorious ideals.
03:13He wasn't a pretender.
03:17Each day we're told by those in high office to fear each other and to turn on each other and
03:24that some Americans count more than others and that some don't even count at all.
03:32Everywhere we see greed and bigotry being celebrated and bullying and mockery masquerading as strength.
03:42We see science and expertise denigrated while ignorance and dishonesty and cruelty and corruption are reaping untold rewards.
03:53Every single day we see that.
03:55And it's hard to hope in those moments.
04:09But this man, Reverend Jesse Lewis Jackson, inspires us to take a harder path.
04:18His voice calls on each of us to be heralds of change.
04:22To be messengers of hope.
04:24To step forward and say, send me.
04:27Send me.
04:28Wherever we have a chance to make an impact.
04:31Whether it's in our school, or our workplaces, or our neighborhoods, or our cities.
04:35Not for fame, not for glory, or because success is guaranteed, but because it gives our life purpose.
04:49Jesse certainly created his fair share of good trouble.
04:54But through decades of service, Jesse's abiding message is one of unity.
05:01That's what he talked about.
05:04Through decades of service, Jesse's abiding message of unity moved people in the right direction.
05:10And above all, he always sought common ground.
05:16They shall mount up with wings and eagles.
05:22He believed in his bones and the promise of America.
05:28We're all created equal in the image of God.
05:30And we hear this all the time.
05:31I wonder how many people really believe it.
05:34He believed everybody who's there to be treated equally and throughout their lives.
05:39And while we've never fully lived of the promise, I don't think things would have been the same if Jesse
05:46not been around.
05:46Because Jesse decided that his life was ensuring that we never fully walk away from it either.
05:52Because there's bad times like now.
05:56We're in a tough spot, folks.
05:59We've got an administration that doesn't share any of the values that we have.
06:05And I don't think I'm exaggerating a little bit.
06:09Forty times two plus.
06:13The more we know one another, the more we understand what we're going through.
06:21There's enough decency and human nature in this country to reach out, to help.
06:31You know, Jesse kept hope alive for us in his lifetime.
06:38And we've got to continue to do it in our lifetime for our children.
06:42Because there's nothing beyond our capacity when we work together.
06:46Nothing, nothing, nothing.
06:48So stand up and finish his job.
06:58He lived with his head and with his heart.
07:06He was faithful to the scripture which said,
07:11we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
07:16But unlike a lot of people in politics,
07:19he didn't go around looking down his nose at other people.
07:24He hated the sin and not the sinner.
07:26He was always trying to lift people up.
07:32I don't think I've ever told anybody this.
07:34I'm here more as a friend than a former president.
07:40He was my friend when I needed him.
07:45And I ask you to ask yourself how you can do more
07:54by being a better friend and a more effective one.
07:57God bless you and thank you.
08:06The problem is that too many of us did not join the movements that sponsored us.
08:12And there was a breakout in 2024 called Negro Amnesia,
08:19where you forgot where you came from
08:22and forgot how you got where you got.
08:25Therefore, they're trying to take back everything you have.
08:38I asked Michael Eric Dyson, our prominent scholar,
08:42where in history is this?
08:43He said, we always go one step forward and two back.
08:47Well, here we are now.
08:49The problem is not Trump.
08:50The problem is us.
08:55We are allowing ourselves to be lowered and our children to feel inferior,
09:03because you don't have an I am somebody person.
09:06You got our artists calling our women bees.
09:10Our others calling us niggers.
09:12What happened to us?
09:14What happened to black and proud?
09:16What happened?
09:17I'm gonna vote.
09:18What happened?
09:19Ain't gonna let nobody turn me around.
09:21What happened to us?
09:23We did not light on us.
09:24Second hearing達.
09:24Is that the journalist?
09:28Is he the journalist?
09:28Can you join me?
09:28No one?
09:31I won't share with you.
09:32Sorry.
09:32Drink the clock!
09:32Atво.
09:32Not that time?
09:32You were
