World Book Day is partnering with shared reading charity The Reader to bring a love of literacy to Calderstones Park encouraging children to enjoy reading in a playful and inclusive environment.
Transcript
00:00Every day is World Book Day here at Calderstones Park.
00:04The Mansion House is home to shared reader charity, The Reader, which brings storytelling
00:09to life, showing that reading can be social, joyful and transformative.
00:13Children who consider themselves readers and read for fun, that is the biggest indicator
00:19of their future success.
00:20It's actually more important than what their parents did for a living, which blows my mind.
00:24It's incredible.
00:25And at the moment, only one in three children would say that they enjoy reading.
00:29So we're working really hard to do something about that by just showing that it's celebratory.
00:34We can be, you know, imaginative.
00:36Things can be inspiring.
00:38A lifelong love of reading starts at a young age.
00:42So we've been asking these little ones what their favourite books are.
00:46I like Zog because it's a Julia Donaldson book and I like Julia Donaldson books.
00:52I like the draft that can't dance because I like dancing and then at the end, she can
00:58dance.
00:59So that's why I like that story.
01:01World Book Day is a national reading charity that exists to help children fall in love with
01:06reading.
01:07By creating joyful, inclusive experiences, it shows children that reading isn't a test
01:12or a chore, but something exciting and empowering.
01:17The work that we do is more important than ever.
01:19This year, we're part of the national year of reading.
01:22Everybody and many literacy charities and schools are grouping together to really put
01:27an emphasis on reading this year.
01:29And reading is in a decline in our country.
01:32We need to work to get our children reading more.
01:36For one in five children, a World Book Day title is the first book they own.
01:39Let your child choose what they want.
01:42All reading is good reading.
01:43And for some children, that might be an audio book.
01:45That's a really good way in.
01:47And for lots of families, if you don't fancy reading the book to your child, if it's not
01:53your thing today, put on an audio book and cosy up and enjoy it together.
01:57There's so much you can do.
01:59Shared memories are created reading together.
02:03National Literacy Trust data shows reading enjoyment is at its lowest level in 20 years.
02:09I think we're taking the joy out of reading.
02:11It should be about excitement.
02:13It shouldn't be about tests.
02:14It shouldn't be about improving vocabulary.
02:16It should be about getting lost in a really brilliant story and connecting with other people.
02:20Because I think when a grown-up shares a story with a child, it's showing them you're important.
02:26This time matters and we're having fun together.
02:29The Reader is the UK's biggest shared reading charity dedicated to connecting more than 25,000
02:35adults and children with literature to improve well-being, literacy and community.
02:41There's a whole list of shared reading groups happening in the Mansion House.
02:45Every day of the week, there's shared reading happening here for adults to get involved with.
02:49And we also have our Story Barn, which is an imaginative story centre for young people
02:54to come with their parents or carers and really, really explore the world of story.
