00:30There's a lot of skepticism around what is AI, how does it actually help filmmaking?
00:34What would you say to those creators and filmmakers who are still very skeptical about it?
00:39I understand the skepticism because I share it,
00:41because I had some experience and relationships with people
00:44in the sort of precursor to AI visual effects community,
00:48to go and see some early versions of what was being done with generative AI and video.
00:54And it really scared me.
00:56I can't believe what this is capable of.
00:58But what I learned pretty quickly was that that was a little bit of an illusion.
01:03It would often fall apart.
01:05What I was really shocked by was how there was this really deep engineering,
01:10math, science level of expertise associated with creating this,
01:14but no artistic, no filmmaking information whatsoever.
01:18I was worried that this was a technology that was going to grow
01:22outside of the ecosystem of filmmakers and artists.
01:26I saw what I thought was a real opportunity and a real authentic danger.
01:30But most importantly, I thought this is a really meaningful innovation.
01:34And it really resonates that instead of letting this technology happen to us or the industry,
01:40we're choosing to shape it.
01:41Exactly.
01:42So how would you describe exactly what this tool is that Interpositive has built?
01:48If you were talking to your favorite filmmaker, you don't have to tell us who that is.
01:52Interpositive is a tool that's designed to solve the specific problems that I'd encountered as a filmmaker
01:58that connect you more to the filmmaking.
02:00It's not about text prompting or generating something from nothing.
02:04You're building a model from your own material.
02:07That's how this works.
02:08You have to create your movie essentially first
02:10before you can really build your model around your movie using AI.
02:15And once you do that, you have your model.
02:17You control it.
02:19Air two, take one.
02:20It's all sticks.
02:21AI, people mostly think of as making something from nothing.
02:24I'm going to type something into a computer and it's going to give me a movie.
02:26That's not what this is.
02:27It was built with a lot of people, a lot smarter than I am.
02:30You use this technology to learn from your own film dailies.
02:34Then you're able to introduce that in the post-production process
02:37so that you're improving your editorial process, your ability to mix, color, finish your film, do visual effects.
02:43It's not a way of imposing a new set of reactions or something alien or foreign to the character.
02:49It can only understand this and only build this tool
02:52because it's trained on the character that the actor has already built.
02:56The filmmaking process, really since its inception, has been one long technological progression.
03:01We've always been seeking to make it feel more realistic, more honest.
03:04And Interpositive is, I hope, another iteration, another step in keeping with that long-end story history.
03:11How do these actors and filmmakers react when you show them what's possible with this tool?
03:16At first, it's startling and it's a little bit unnerving.
03:20But what they do want to know is, so what does this mean?
03:22And I always say, it means you and I can go shoot a movie on a stage
03:26and we can really focus on the performance and the intention and the meaning and the humanity of it.
03:30I want to take out all the logistical, difficult, technical stuff that often gets in the way.
03:35You can use your own model to remove the wires on stunts, reframe a shot, get a shot you missed,
03:41shape the lighting, enhance the backgrounds.
03:42You can take some of those problems out.
03:45Yes, you can do it more quickly. You can do it more easily.
03:47You're given more choice. You're given more opportunity.
03:50You're getting more episodes of your favorite shows.
03:51You're getting more human work.
03:53So how do you think about the responsibility that Netflix has in this space
03:58and especially now in joining forces with Interpositive and you?
04:03What was impressed upon me was, like, this is a group of people that genuinely cares about this industry
04:07that wants to foster growth in it, that wants to enable creativity.
04:10During the last couple of years, you've produced movies for us, you've starred in movies, you've directed movies.
04:17I think having that, you know, exactly what it is to make, multiple movies.
04:22Absolutely.
04:22Right, with us in every aspect.
04:24It worked all across this company with a whole range of your executives, a whole team,
04:28and every step along the way, it only reinforced that, like, sense of security and comfort.
04:32And I thought, this is a place I feel really good about bringing this tool.
04:36I'm glad that comes across because it's not new to Netflix to work with technology.
04:41We've been working with ML and AI for a long time, but always in service of responsible use of technology
04:47versus technology for technology's sake really rings true in terms of the culture of the company.
04:52And I can validate that because as we start to build this, I got exposed to everybody in the tech
04:58community.
04:58And there are a lot of competing philosophies about how it should be done.
05:02Some people move fast and break things.
05:04I can imagine.
05:04Yeah.
05:04A lot of different approaches.
05:06And I can tell you what, it's very uncommon for those to be characterized by compassion for
05:12or even an interest in creative community or artists.
05:15And a lot of times I heard people saying, how do we get the human out of the loop?
05:18What Netflix does and what the film community here does broadly is say,
05:22we actually care about this whole ecosystem.
05:25For us and Netflix, like, I always want and hope we can always, like, provide filmmakers tools.
05:31Because for me, it's not really about cheaper.
05:33It's really about better.
05:34I didn't need to go into technology.
05:37I did this because I love it.
05:39I'm passionate about it.
05:40And because I want to sustain and protect this thing that we all love, which is why we're here.
