00:28The iPhone 12 has an aluminum border.
00:30iPhone 12 Pro is surgical grade stainless steel with flat sides now, all new design.
00:36So that should help with durability of the new glass.
00:38So let's go ahead and dig in, see what we got and put the claims to the test.
00:43All right, and here's that slimmer packaging.
00:45About half of that of the 11 Pro series.
00:48This is in the new blue color.
00:51Oh, wow.
00:52It actually looks so much different than what you see online.
00:55And I'm so nervous.
00:58The first flat bodied iPhone since the iPhone 5S or SE series.

01:04And we got a new, some sort of screen protector shield here.
01:08So much thinner than it looks in pictures.
01:107.4 millimeters and flat sides.
01:14My goodness.
01:15The blue, not a big fan of this color.

01:19Let's power that on.
01:20Got the millimeter wave antenna band right there.
01:22It's just after doing leaks on these bad boys so long holding it.

01:47Somewhat reminiscent of Midnight Green on the 11 Pro series.

01:52That feels solid.
01:54So this one is 15 grams heavier than the iPhone 12.
01:57And that could play a factor in the durability.
01:59So that's why I want to test both of these.
02:01And there's that new LiDAR sensor.
02:03Overall camera layout pretty much unchanged.
02:05A much smaller mic input there.
02:07Oh my goodness.
02:08This is going to hurt so bad to drop.
02:10And let's check out the gold.
02:11So the gold version actually has a magnetically finished material or coating.
02:19So this is the most scratch resistant.
02:22The gold version, surprisingly.
02:24The back, not as gold as before, but the bands.

03:05I want to use one as slow-mo and get into that drop test.
03:08Wow.
03:09So the bezels are almost half a millimeter thinner.
03:12And you can definitely tell.
03:14My goodness, this changes the experience completely.
03:16It's so flat.
03:19The glass doesn't rise out at all.
03:21I think that'll make a huge difference in the drop test.
03:24Marveling at the flat body look.
03:26I didn't know I wanted it this bad until I held it.
03:28So as always, we'll go through three series.
03:30Waist height, head height, and then go even further to 10 feet.
03:34And we'll start with the aluminum iPhone 12.
03:36In three, two, one.
03:40And here we go on the 12 Pro.

03:45Not a very violent impact.
03:47Both still good here.
03:49Apple says that the flat edges do help.
03:51Although, wow, it's dented.
03:54It's quite a dent on the 12 series here just from a waist height fault.
03:59On the 12 Pro, scuffed, but no deformation in the metal as it is much tougher.
04:06Wow, I did not think that from a waist height it would bend that much.
04:10It's crazy.
04:10On its rear.
04:11Now, the rear only has dual ion glass.
04:14So it's not as durable as the front.
04:16You still want to protect it.
04:17Most definitely.
04:18I have a feeling the rear definitely will break first.

04:26So definitely registered some sort of impact.

04:40Now let's test out that ceramic shield.
04:43Four times as durable as the iPhone 11.
04:45The toughest glass in a smartphone ever.

05:01All good on the 12 Pro series.

05:06I just love how seamless it is.
05:09It's just barely raised.

05:12Let's move it up to head height as both have survived here.

05:20That's on its side.
05:22And iPhone 12 Pro head height.

05:28Kind of lean towards face down, but wow.

05:33So we've got quite a bit of scuffing here.
05:35You can see the natural color of the stainless as it's scratching away there.

05:44So the 12 series also.
05:47Now I'm seeing even more deformation here in the aluminum.
05:52So, wow.
05:53That's going to look ugly.
05:54That's a massive shard of aluminum that's jutting out.
05:57Otherwise, the glass is uncracked.
05:59And on the rear, dual ion glass.

06:04Actually, let's take a look at that.
06:08Oh, wow.
06:09Still not broken.
06:11And the iPhone 12 Pro series.

06:17Another smack down.
06:18So two things happen.
06:20Also went into vibrate mode and the SIM card tray just popped out on its own accord, but
06:25no break.
06:27Incredible.
06:28Look at these stresses these phones can go through and not break.
06:33Let's put those ceramic shield crystals to the test.

06:43Still not broken.
06:45My goodness.
06:47And the 12 Pro series.

06:54Perfectly, perfectly flat fall.

06:58That's mental.
06:59So I believe the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max survived up until this point.
07:03Now we have to go even further.
07:05Overall condition seems stable aside from scratched and dented bodies.
07:11Oh, and my goodness, I did not see that.
07:12So that's a line of dead pixels.
07:15So the displays on these are thinner than on the 11 Pro series.
07:19I think that's partly why they were able to make the frames thinner.
07:22And that's because they incorporated the touch layer with the display layer.
07:26This may be because of that.
07:29So the glass itself doesn't break, but the screen portion underneath is suffering.
07:33Okay, time to get the ladder out.
07:35And we got to go to 10 feet as simply was not enough.
07:39I am impressed.
07:40Ceramic shield more than marketing.
07:42Clearly it's working.
07:43Battered, bruised, but not broken.
07:46And dropping as close as I can get to 10 feet in three, two, one.
08:01And wow, no break.
08:03Did stop recording.
08:05The camera's not working.
08:06So that's the last thing this camera saw before stopping.
08:10The glass didn't break.
08:11The glass remains durable.
08:12But there are still other components inside the phone which may stop working.
08:17iPhone 12 Pro series with dead pixels.

08:35These are not as aerodynamic as the 11 Pro series.

09:18These honestly sound different when dropping versus the 11 and 11 Pro series.

09:28So, flat on the back from around 10 feet here.
09:32That's where the claims end.
09:34On the 12 and 12 Pro series.
09:36And let's see what kind of a break it is.
09:39So, yeah.
09:40This does jut out.
09:41It's not terrible, but I think it still would cause you to bleed.
09:43I mean, that took a lot of abuse.
09:45SIM card tray came out here too.
09:46Now the phone is a little bit warped.
09:49Yeah, yeah.
09:49It's definitely a little bit bent.
09:52It's going like that.
09:54And the 12 series.
09:56Yeah, that's bent too.
09:57Like a little banana.
09:59Hard to see, but it is warped.

10:04Ceramic shield, which is yet unbroken after multiple falls.

10:58And might be prone to bending with extreme falls like this.

11:14Just by how high it jumped, you can see how much force it's returning.

11:20So yes.
11:20Apple ceramic shield is very durable.
11:22It took a 10 foot fall face down for it to finally break on the 12 pro series.
11:27Did not on the 12 series.
11:29The back.
11:30Not as durable.
11:31It's using last year's glass.
11:32The frames are prone to bending with extreme and repeated drops.
11:37So you still would want to protect against that.
11:39And even though that the screen may not break, other things may happen like these broken pixels and the camera
11:45not working.
11:46So you still want to protect your phone with a proper investment.
