00:10April 2, 2024, the president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, is inaugurating his crowning
00:17glory, the new administrative capital. What you see is real. A megacity has risen out
00:24of the desert sands. From behind the tinted windows, the president contemplates the fulfillment
00:31of his dream. He could envision no other place to take the oath of office for his third term
00:39as president.
01:04This capital city took inspiration from Dubai, and only superlatives apply. The Middle East's
01:11largest mosque, Africa's tallest skyscraper. But this image of a country operating like a
01:18well-oiled machine is but a facade. Egypt is actually on the brink of destruction.
01:39The country relies on foreign investment to survive, but the massive influx of funding
01:44is monopolized by these colossal construction projects built by an all-powerful army. The
01:51Egyptian people are paying the price for president El-Sisi's quest for grandeur.
01:56El-Sisi says, I'm trying to build Egypt. Don't ask me for more spending on health and education.
02:02That's not the priority. If you want to build Egypt, you have to sacrifice. You can't tell
02:08me you want to eat and drink when we want to build Egypt. You have to tighten your belts.
02:14Will Egypt, known as the mother of the world, be able to hang on?
