00:00I love you and I'm gonna miss you, man.
00:02That's what I mean.
00:03Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:04And today we're counting down our picks
00:06for the SVU character deaths
00:08that caught us completely off guard.
00:10Look, we had a good run.
00:12Conviction rates are up.
00:14We had to get screwed sometime.
00:16Obviously, there will be spoilers.
00:19Number 20, Captain Cragen.
00:21Season 27 had the nerve to open on this shocker
00:24without giving fans even a little bit of warning.
00:27Benson walks into a bar
00:28where she's greeted by a wreath of flowers
00:30and a huge portrait of her former captain's face
00:32and viewers immediately know what's happening.
00:34I love you.
00:37Hey, it's good to see you.
00:39It seems too soon.
00:41Cragen retired less than 12 years ago
00:43just as he hit the NYPD's mandatory retirement age of 62.
00:48Of course, supervising the SVU unit
00:50might have aged him prematurely.
00:52At least we're treated to cameos
00:54from George Wong and Brian Cassidy.
00:55He was a, uh, he was a great guy.
00:58Yeah.
00:58I'm sorry, Liv.
01:00It's good to see you.
01:02That almost makes up for dropping
01:04the bombshell of Cragen's death on us.
01:06Now, it's not easy going from player to coach,
01:08so, uh, don't bust their chops.
01:12But if they do, you bust them right back.
01:20Number 19, Nadia Dakotas.
01:23This Chicago PD character was introduced in season one
01:26when she was arrested by Detective Aaron Lindsay,
01:28who eventually helped her kick her substance use disorder.
01:31I'm really sorry I let you down before.
01:34Fresh start right here, right now.
01:35The two later became close,
01:37and Nadia even got a job working
01:39with the department's intelligence unit.
01:41That's why it was especially devastating
01:43when Nadia was kidnapped and murdered
01:44by New York-based serial killer Greg Yates.
01:47I said, lie still,
01:49or I will knock you clear out.
01:50Got it?
01:51In a multi-episode crossover with SVU,
01:54detectives from both cities hunt for Nadia
01:56and her abductor,
01:57but unfortunately, they're too late.
01:59The only silver lining is that Nadia's body
02:02is found with numerous others,
02:04along with plenty of evidence to put Yates away,
02:06if they ever catch him.
02:08Someone will do to you what you did to Nadia.
02:11Number 18, Keisha Houston.
02:13The cases with young kids are always the hardest to watch.
02:17Eight-year-old Keisha and her three-year-old brother,
02:19Bruno live with their horribly abusive mother.
02:21After Bruno is found wandering the streets alone,
02:24the detectives identify him
02:25with the help of child services.
02:27At his apartment,
02:28they find Keisha locked in a cage,
02:30unconscious, dehydrated, and malnourished.
02:33Her mother has been starving her
02:34as punishment for crying.
02:36That's Keisha's fault.
02:38If she shut up, stop crying,
02:40maybe she'd earn herself some food.
02:41Sadly, she doesn't survive.
02:44The case against the mother is open and shut,
02:46but the episode hinges around
02:48an understaffed, overworked social services department,
02:51and who's ultimately responsible.
02:52I didn't want any of this to happen.
02:54You didn't want to advance your career
02:56by ignoring innocent children's pain and death,
02:59or you didn't want to get caught.
03:01Objection!
03:01Viewers are left wondering
03:03how many other kids like Keisha
03:04have fallen through the cracks.
03:06Mother is a piece of work.
03:08She's also a murderer.
03:12Keisha didn't make it.
03:15Number 17.
03:16John Munch.
03:16I didn't know you were coming in.
03:18Well, I wanted to wait till it was quiet.
03:20I didn't want to make a fuss.
03:21Really?
03:22When Richard Belzer passed away in 2023,
03:25it was only natural that the show
03:26paid tribute to him in some way.
03:28But that didn't make the news
03:29of Munch's death any easier to swallow.
03:32After all,
03:33the character had been on our screens for decades,
03:36debuting on Homicide Life on the Street
03:38back in 1993,
03:39before making the jump to SVU in 99.
03:42You had one hell of a run, Sergeant Munch.
03:45Did I?
03:47I don't know where it all went.
03:50My friend?
03:53He'd also appeared in other Law & Order series
03:56and made cameos in a dozen other shows and movies.
03:59Munch was a staple of primetime television.
04:01It's still hard to believe he's gone.
04:03You know, Munch would have ran him off
04:04just telling him his theory
04:05about the Kennedy assassination.
04:07To Munch, the man, the man, Sergeant.
04:10To Detective Munch.
04:12Number 16.
04:13Ellie Porter.
04:14Hers was an especially tragic case,
04:17but at least something positive came out of it.
04:19Ellie was forced to become a sex worker at a young age
04:22and developed substance use disorder
04:24around the same time.
04:25The SVU crew collars her
04:27while she's working with her employer
04:29to rob wealthy tourists.
04:30And she turns out to be the mother
04:32of an unclaimed baby who'd been found in a motel.
04:34You got so big.
04:36Oh, I missed you.
04:39Oh my God.
04:41Hoping to get her son back,
04:43Ellie promises to testify against the other thieves,
04:45but they get to her first.
04:47She's found murdered shortly after
04:48she's admitted to a halfway house.
04:50Is it her?
04:51My body's burned up pretty bad.
04:53The baby she leaves behind is Noah Porter,
04:56who Benson eventually adopts.
04:58Hi, mister.
05:00Hi.
05:02Number 15.
05:04Alexandra Cabot.
05:05We know she didn't actually die,
05:07but we all thought she was dead
05:08and it was shocking.
05:10Alex joins the show as the full-time ADA in season two.
05:13And in season five,
05:15she gets into hot water
05:16while prosecuting the leader of a cartel.
05:18The defendant is a Colombian national
05:19with known ties to major drug organizations.
05:22He has unlimited resources at his disposal
05:24and we consider him a flight risk.
05:26We request remand, your honor.
05:27My client has never been charged
05:29with anything related to drug trafficking.
05:31The gang puts out a hit on her
05:32and near the end of the episode,
05:34it appears to be carried out
05:35when she's killed in a drive-by shooting.
05:37Yeah.
05:38No, I'm not far.
05:39I'll walk.
05:40Thanks, though.
05:41Look, I'm sorry I'm such a buzzkill.
05:43Oh, don't be silly.
05:45It's late.
05:46Get out!
05:48Go, go, go!
05:49The moment comes out of nowhere
05:50and we're just as stunned and upset as Liv.
05:53However, Alex still has one more surprise in store for us.
05:57While the crew is still mourning her,
05:59she reveals that she's alive
06:00and has gone into witness protection.
06:03Witness protection.
06:05Until Thales is extradited or otherwise dealt with.
06:10Number 14.
06:11Elias Barrera.
06:12This show really knows how to pull on our heartstrings.
06:15Elias is just seven years old
06:17and at the beginning of the episode,
06:19he shoots and kills his six-year-old classmate Carly.
06:22We eventually learn that the shooting was an accident.
06:25He'd brought the gun to school to protect himself
06:27after witnessing a gang murder.
06:28Why didn't you take the gun?
06:32I didn't want him to kill me, too.
06:34He's so small and innocent
06:36and he feels terrible about what he's done.
06:38After the gang is brought to justice
06:39and the charges against Elias are dropped,
06:41it seems as if things will work out for the Barrera family.
06:44It's clear the respondent lacked the mens rea to commit a crime.
06:49Therefore, we will not pursue the case.
06:58But SVU has to go for the gut punch in the final scene yet again
07:02when Elias is shot by a neighborhood kid
07:04in retaliation for killing Carly.
07:06Can't kill a sister and just walk.
07:09Hey, come on, man.
07:10Leave me alone, man.
07:11I ain't do nothing, man.
07:12Number 13.
07:13Pamela Stone
07:14The only thing the SVU writers love more
07:17than traumatizing their viewers
07:18is traumatizing their major characters.
07:21Pamela is ADA Peter Stone's older sister.
07:24She barely appears on the show
07:25because she has schizophrenia
07:26and lives in a full-time care facility.
07:28Daddy.
07:30No.
07:31It's me, Peter.
07:33She's introduced a few episodes
07:35after Peter makes his first appearance
07:37and dies just a few episodes after that
07:39when a gang lays siege to the facility.
07:41Peter just lost his father
07:43and now he has to watch his sister
07:45bleed out in front of him.
07:46No wonder he didn't stick around for long.
07:48Number 12.
07:49Simon Marsden
07:50In season 8, Benson learns
07:53that she has a younger half-brother
07:54and she goes to New Jersey to see him.
07:56Simon turns out to be a problem from day one.
07:59What? What's wrong?
08:01Nothing.
08:02This was a mistake.
08:03He's constantly in trouble with the law,
08:05sometimes because of his own bad decisions
08:07and sometimes just through bad luck.
08:09He keeps trying to turn his life around
08:11and keeps failing.
08:12It was an accident.
08:14Olivia, I swear we would never hurt our kids.
08:17In season 21,
08:18Simon shows up again.
08:20His wife has left him and taken their kids
08:22and he wants to reconnect with Liv
08:23and get to know Noah.
08:25They make a lunch date,
08:26but Simon never shows.
08:27Only later does Benson learn
08:29that he died of an overdose.
08:30He told me that he was sober.
08:32He was telling you the truth.
08:36If I had to guess,
08:37he'd been clean for quite a while.
08:39Number 11, Maria Racinos.
08:41Her story isn't so different from Nadia Dakotas'.
08:44Maria was first introduced as a little girl
08:47in an intense season 7 episode.
08:49She'd been abducted and abused
08:51and Benson rescued her
08:52after her kidnapper buried her alive.
08:54Good girl, it's okay.
08:59It's okay, Maria.
09:00The experience inspired Maria to become a cop
09:02and later a detective.
09:04Benson attends her graduation from the academy
09:06and the two reunite,
09:07but Maria's career as an officer is short-lived.
09:10She's murdered by her own supervisor
09:12in a particularly brutal way a year later.
09:15The news hits Benson hard
09:17and she sets out to find Maria's killer
09:19and make him pay.
09:20We were able to ID our burn victim.
09:22Great.
09:25Well, it was a cop.
09:28Cop?
09:30Named Maria Racinos.
09:37Maria Racinos.
09:39You knew her?
09:40No wonder she's in therapy.
09:42Number 10, Sonia Paxton.
09:44Darn it, we were just starting to like her.
09:46When Sonia Paxton shows up
09:47to replace Alex Cabot
09:49at the beginning of season 11,
09:50she's no one's favorite character.
09:52She's abrasive and condescending
09:54and of course she clashes with Elliot Stabler.
09:57Oh yeah, detectives didn't do their jobs
09:58in the first place.
09:59Well, that isn't the case here, Ms. Paxton.
10:02Tate's guilty.
10:02Really?
10:03Oh, well that's great then.
10:05You don't mind calling me
10:06after you re-interview Katie Harris
10:08and show her a sequential photo array.
10:10In season 12,
10:12after she arrives in court intoxicated,
10:14we learn that years ago,
10:15a killer had gotten away on her watch.
10:17That led her to start drinking.
10:19I know that there is no way
10:21that you will ever be able to forgive me.
10:27But I intend to make amends.
10:31Her dedication is just beginning to win us over
10:34when Benson finds her stabbed
10:35and bleeding out in a bathroom.
10:37Her murder is totally unexpected.
10:39She does manage to take a bite out of the killer,
10:42literally,
10:43capturing DNA that ultimately enables
10:45the detectives to catch the guy.
10:47There's a hair in her throat.
10:49I'll swab her mouth
10:50and check her stomach for his blood.
10:52Well, at least she went down fighting.
10:55Number nine,
10:56Drew Householder.
10:57Everything about this case is heartbreaking.
10:59Drew is an infant
11:01with a severe genetic disorder.
11:03He can't see,
11:04hear,
11:04or think,
11:05and he feels nothing but pain.
11:07What did the doctor say?
11:08That there's nothing they can do.
11:10That we can only watch him suffer until...
11:14It is killing us,
11:15Mr. Barba.
11:16His parents can't agree
11:18on whether to keep him alive
11:19or end his suffering.
11:20ADA Raphael Barba
11:22decides to take matters into his own hands.
11:24Why?
11:24Why can't he just die?
11:26Why?
11:29Why?
11:37He can't.
11:38When Drew's mother can't bring herself
11:40to pull the plug,
11:41Rafa ushers her out of the hospital room
11:43and does it himself.
11:44No one was expecting the story
11:46to take a turn like this.
11:47Although Rafa has been known
11:49to play fast and loose with procedure,
11:51he's never put his career
11:52in such serious jeopardy.
11:54The episode marks the end
11:55of his time as an SVU DA.
11:57What are you going to do?
11:59Would it be unbearably corny
12:00if I said I'm going to do what I must?
12:03Yes, it would.
12:08But I understand.
12:10Number 8.
12:11Ryan O'Halloran
12:12Our perp scribbled more than we thought.
12:14I didn't see it
12:14till I pulled the rig from the car.
12:17One down, three to go.
12:19He's gunning for revenge
12:20against everyone who betrayed him.
12:22CSU technician Dale Stuckey
12:23is a pain in the neck
12:25from the moment he arrives on the scene.
12:27But we were still caught off guard
12:28when he's revealed to be a murderer.
12:31Ryan O'Halloran
12:31has been a recurring character
12:32on SVU for six years,
12:34but he becomes one of Stuckey's victims
12:36when he finds evidence
12:37of Stuckey's other crimes.
12:39At that point in the episode,
12:40the audience still has no idea
12:42that Stuckey is the killer
12:43thanks to some excellent misdirection.
12:45You didn't think I could do anything right.
12:51Stuckey, what have you done?
12:52What, you can't figure that out?
12:54Huh?
12:55Big Mr. Detective.
12:57O'Halloran's sudden stabbing
12:58seems to happen out of nowhere.
13:00We were sad to see him leave the series,
13:02but we certainly cannot say the same
13:04about Dale Stuckey.
13:05Captain, he just assaulted me.
13:07You have to write him up.
13:07Only one getting a rip around here
13:09is you, Dale.
13:10He just accosted me.
13:12If Elliot puts your head through a wall,
13:14I'm gonna have to do
13:14a lot of tiresome paperwork.
13:16Get out of my squad.
13:18Number seven, Esther Labotte.
13:20This poor girl lived in misery and terror,
13:22and her death is unbelievably tragic.
13:25Esther's father is a religious fanatic,
13:27and he starves and abuses
13:28all nine of his children.
13:30William bought five hot dogs
13:31and broke them in half for the kids.
13:33Well, maybe he's low on cash.
13:35Look, the kids all look underweight.
13:37And what happened in that house in New Jersey
13:39wasn't about poverty or cutesy outfits.
13:42The Labotte family is its own patriarchal cult.
13:45Esther is so malnourished
13:46that everyone assumes she's a teenager,
13:48even though she's actually 27 years old.
13:51She refuses to press charges against her parents,
13:54but Detective Rollins
13:55isn't about to let this case go.
13:57She tracks down the Labotte house,
13:59and the situation quickly escalates into a shootout.
14:01Hold your fire!
14:02Hold your fire!
14:03Hold fire! Hold fire!
14:10Most of the Labotte children make it out,
14:13but not Esther.
14:13The revelation of how she died
14:16is somehow the most disturbing part of the episode.
14:18You fired the bullet that killed Esther Labotte.
14:40Number 6. Lauren Cooper
14:42We only get one episode with FBI Agent Cooper,
14:45but that doesn't make her ending any less jarring.
14:48I would have been proud to help you call her
14:49the bastard who murdered 24 women.
14:52That would have satisfied me.
14:55That wasn't good enough.
14:57She enlists the help of the SVU detectives
15:00to track a serial killer and rescue his last victim,
15:02but we soon learn that she already murdered
15:04the murderer herself.
15:06The team is unable to save the victim in time,
15:08and her death hits Agent Cooper hard.
15:10You okay?
15:14No.
15:16Like I said, I'm not used to dealing with victims.
15:20Feeling guilty for her role in the incident
15:22and unwilling to go to prison,
15:23Cooper takes her own life right in front of Benson and Lake.
15:26The moment is shocking enough,
15:28but Olivia's reaction is what really stays with you.
15:31Number 5. Sister Peg
15:33This killing is so senseless and so out of left field
15:36that fans still aren't over it.
15:38Peg devotes her life to helping the most downtrodden people.
15:41I start handing them over to the police.
15:43They stop coming and I can't do my job.
15:46What exactly is your job?
15:48Trying to keep them smart and safe.
15:51Like you.
15:52She makes semi-regular appearances on the show
15:54in seasons 3 through 8.
15:56Then in season 12,
15:57the showrunners bring her back
15:59apparently just to kill her off.
16:00If you're here to save some souls,
16:02I think those three are beyond help.
16:03Actually, Sister Peg's doing a different kind of work for the Lord.
16:06Check that out.
16:07I found those hidden in someone else's locker at the shelter.
16:09Sister Peg is in the wrong place at the wrong time
16:12when Jenna Fox, the daughter of a murder victim,
16:14shows up at the precinct.
16:15With no warning,
16:17Jenna starts shooting at the men responsible for her mother's death,
16:20then firing randomly around the room.
16:22She kills Peg and Elliot is forced to shoot her.
16:25As she bleeds out in his arms,
16:27the audience is left stunned at what they just witnessed.
16:31Number 4. Mike Duarte
16:32Like Sonia Paxton,
16:34Captain Duarte starts out as an antagonist in the SVU squad room,
16:38but he eventually wins over his fellow cops.
16:41A veteran of the Bronx gang unit,
16:43he's called in by the chief to aid in an investigation.
16:46Anyone ever call you classy?
16:47Gotta go.
16:48She your zookeeper or something?
16:52Detective Muncy speaks her mind.
16:54And everybody else's.
16:56Well, it's nice to see you so relaxed.
16:58It must mean you have leave.
16:59He and Benson clash at first,
17:00but they soon learn to work together and develop a good rapport.
17:03Some fans even speculated that Duarte could be a love interest for Olivia.
17:08Unfortunately, his time on the show is short-lived.
17:10Oscar Papa will do that to you.
17:13That's like a bed bug.
17:16You know, I finally understand why
17:20you are the way you are.
17:25He's ruined hundreds of lives.
17:27After just four episodes,
17:29he's attacked by gang members in a convenience store and murdered.
17:32It's a brutal killing that happens just as the audience was starting to get attached.
17:37He wanted to take away everything I've built.
17:41Couldn't allow that to happen.
17:43Number 3. Kathy Stabler
17:45As the wife of Detective Elliot Stabler,
17:47Kathy was a regular fixture on SVU for over a decade,
17:51starting with episode 1.
17:52She's a loving mom and a patient wife.
17:55And although she and Elliot go through some tough times,
17:57they work things out in the end.
17:59When the Stablers return to New York in season 22,
18:02Kathy unexpectedly becomes the victim of a car bombing.
18:05I tried to kill her.
18:08I tried to kill Kathy.
18:09No one saw this coming.
18:11She survives the initial attack and appears to be recovering,
18:14then suddenly takes a turn for the worse later in the episode.
18:18We took her into surgery, but it was too late.
18:27I didn't get to say goodbye.
18:28She dies off screen.
18:30And if you want to find out who killed her,
18:32you'll have to tune in to Law & Order Organized Crime.
18:35What a thankless ending for such an important character.
18:38Hey, Kathy?
18:41I'm okay.
18:43I'm just so tired.
18:45Number 2.
18:46Ed Tucker.
18:47Couldn't wait to get rid of me.
18:48Now I need an order of protection against you.
18:50Ed, we need to talk.
18:52Walk with me.
18:54I'm not going far.
18:55This former captain of the Internal Affairs Bureau
18:58has one of the most compelling arcs of any side character in the franchise.
19:02In early seasons, Ed Tucker showing up on the scene
19:04always means trouble for our heroes.
19:06However, over time, he slowly turns into one of the good guys.
19:10He and Benson even start a relationship,
19:12though they eventually go their separate ways.
19:15That's why it's such a shock when, like Sister Peg and Kathy Stabler,
19:19he returns for one episode just to be killed off.
19:22Ed, what are we doing here?
19:25You can't tell my wife.
19:26In season 21, he reveals that he has brain cancer.
19:30And later, we learn that he took his own life
19:32to spare his new wife from having to care for him.
19:35It is a devastating revelation.
19:50Before we unveil our top pick,
19:53here are some honorable mentions.
19:55PJ Bartlett.
19:56He was the innocent victim of a dangerously obsessed defense attorney.
19:59I love PJ.
20:02And I'm never gonna let you hurt him again.
20:07PJ!
20:07Stop!
20:09The Manning baby.
20:11His own father killed him thinking he was someone else's child.
20:14Did your son cry before you killed him?
20:21Elijah Okello.
20:23This former child soldier fled to the U.S. to find peace,
20:26but instead found more violence.
20:29Don't shoot!
20:30Don't shoot!
20:31Don't shoot!
20:32Avery Parker.
20:33She was recovering from her attack
20:35when she took a shocking turn for the worse.
20:37No!
20:38I can't.

20:55Number 1.
20:56Mike Dodds.
20:57The writers really pulled the rug out from under us with this one.
21:00Deputy Chief Dodds appoints his son Mike
21:02to be Benson's second-in-command early in season 17.
21:05Anti-crime, Crown Heights.
21:07Okay, Dad.
21:07Before that, Special Forces.
21:09You signed up out of college right after 9-11.
21:12Can't tell you how proud I am of this kid.
21:13Yeah, thanks.
21:15But I am new to Special Vicks.
21:17I know I have a lot to learn.
21:18It takes Mike a little while to settle into his role,
21:20but soon he's right at home at SVU.
21:22In fact, the audience gets the impression
21:24that he's going to become a permanent addition to the team.
21:27Later, he decides to join the Joint Terrorism Task Force.
21:30But before he leaves, he's shot in the stomach.
21:33I blew it, Dad.
21:34No, no, no, you didn't.
21:37I didn't search the guy.
21:39I should have known better.
21:41You saved a woman and her two children.
21:44You know, after this,
21:46you can put the hero thing aside for a while.
21:49In the hospital, Mike suffers a stroke and severe brain damage,
21:52and his father makes the difficult choice
21:54to take him off life support.
21:56The entire incident is a shocking blow to the detectives,
22:00the deputy chief, and the fans.
22:02What the hell was he thinking?
22:04That he wanted to be like his father.
22:09A hero.
