Britain’s most senior police officer has hailed the “extraordinary dignity in the face of unbearable grief” shown by the family of Sarah Everard on the fifth anniversary of her murder.

00:00In a statement issued by the force, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said Sarah Everard should still be here.
00:08He added, what happened to her was a profound betrayal of her, of her family and loved ones and of
00:14every person who places their trust in policing.
00:17He said the fact that she was killed by a serving police officer, Wayne Cousins, was as devastating today as
00:25it was in 2021.
00:27Cousins was given a whole life jail term at the end of his Old Bailey trial in September of 2021
00:33and the powerful victim impact statement made by Miss Everard's mother led to the unmasking of another predator hiding in
00:41the ranks of the Met.
00:42One of the victims of David Carrick was moved to come forward and make a report to the police, which
00:49eventually led to his conviction as a serial rapist.
00:51The cases led to two damning reviews. One, a report by Baroness Louise Casey in March 2023 that found the
01:00Met was institutionally racist, misogynist and homophobic.
01:04Then an inquiry by Dame Elish Angiolini in February 2024 concluded that the Met and two other police forces could
01:13and should have stopped Cousins being a police officer.
01:16Sir Mark spearheaded efforts to clean up the Met, with 1,500 officers and staff having been sacked, resigned or
01:24retired in the past three years.
