00:00In the freezing darkness of April 14, 1912, the IMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic,
00:07tearing open her starboard side below the waterline.
00:09At Feist, many passengers felt only a shudder, unaware that five watertight compartments were already flooding.
00:16More than the ship was designed to survive, as distress rockets lit the sky.
00:21Crew members began loading lifeboats, but there were far too few for the more than 2,200 people on board.
00:27The band played to calm the crowd while wireless operators sent desperate calls for help into the night.
00:33Within 2 hours and 40 minutes, the boats slipped beneath the safest,
00:38the great ship breaking apart before the stain rose high and plunged into the icy sea.
00:43By 2.20 a.m., Titanic was gone, leaving over 1,500 people lost in the freezing water,
00:49and a tragedy that would change maritime safety laws forever.
