00:01Okay, bear with me, because this is a lot.
00:04I didn't grow up wanting to be a politician.
00:07I'm a plumber.
00:09And two weeks ago, during all this, I also qualified as a plasterer.
00:14Because even in chaos, even under pressure, I get things done.
00:19I am no different to every single person here in this constituency.
00:24I work hard. That is what we do.
00:27Except things have changed a lot over the last few decades.
00:30Because working hard used to get you something.
00:33It got you a house, a nice life, holidays.
00:37It got you somewhere.
00:38But now, working hard, what does that get you?
00:43Because talk to anyone here and they will tell you.
00:45The people who work hard but can't put food on the table,
00:50can't get their kids' school uniforms, can't put their heating on,
00:53can't live off the pension they worked hard to save for,
00:57can't even begin to dream about ever having a holiday.
01:01Ever.
01:02Because life has changed.
01:04Instead of working for a nice life,
01:06we're working to line the pockets of billionaires.
01:09We are being bled dry.
01:11And I don't think it's extreme or radical to think working hard should get you a nice life.
01:16And I don't think that if you're not able to work,
01:19that you should still have a nice life.
01:21I think that absolutely everybody should get a nice life.
01:25And so when it came to fighting for people here,
01:28to stand in this election,
01:29well, how could I not fight?
01:31Because here, this is what we do.
01:33We fight for each other in this very diverse constituency,
01:36where our struggles might not always be the same,
01:39but where we know how hard life can be and we stick together.
01:42Whatever our beliefs, our backgrounds, our colour, or our level of education,
01:47we stick up for each other.
01:49To our Muslim communities,
01:51who this week suffered an attempted attack during Ramadan,
01:55whilst I was being welcomed by women at a mosque in Longside,
01:59someone just down the road walked into a mosque carrying an axe.
02:03And whilst we were gathered and eating together,
02:06an act of terror could easily have taken place.
02:09And I can't and won't accept this victory tonight
02:11without calling out the politicians and divisive figures
02:15who constantly scapegoat and blame our communities
02:18for all the problems in society.
02:21My Muslim friends and neighbours are just like me, human.
02:25And of course, to our white working class communities,
02:29the background that I have become so proud to be from,
02:33We know how it feels to be looked down on,
02:35maybe because we didn't do well at school,
02:37maybe because we do dirty manual jobs,
02:40because we are shut out of places we should be in.
02:44To people here in Gorton and Denton who feel left behind and isolated,
02:48I see you and I will fight for you.
