00:002. Ever wondered how one man's mistake completely reshaped the world?
00:04Let's talk about Christopher Columbus and his four epic and ultimately world-changing voyages.
00:10It all started in 1492.
00:13Columbus, an Italian explorer sailing for Spain, was convinced he could find a new, faster route to Asia by sailing
00:19west across the Atlantic.
00:21So, with three ships, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, he set off.
00:26Instead of Asia, he landed in the Bahamas, becoming one of the first Europeans to set foot in the Americas.
00:33He called the local people Indians, believing he'd reached the East Indies.
00:38This first voyage opened the floodgates for European exploration, but he didn't stop there.
00:44His second voyage a year later was much larger, with 17 ships and over a thousand men.
00:50This time, he explored more of the Caribbean islands, including Puerto Rico and Jamaica.
00:56Establishing colonies and beginning the often brutal process of European settlement.
01:01He was on a mission to find gold and establish a permanent presence for Spain.
01:06Its third voyage, starting in 1498, took him further south.
01:11He reached the mainland of South America, near modern-day Venezuela.
01:15Finally, realizing he had found a massive new continent, not just a series of islands off the coast of Asia.
01:21However, his time as governor of the new colonies was a disaster, filled with mismanagement and rebellion.
01:28And he was even sent back to Spain in chains, cleared of the most serious charges.
01:33He was given one last chance.
01:35The fourth voyage, from 1502 to 1504, was a desperate search for that elusive strait to the Indian Ocean.
01:43He explored the coast of Central America, from Honduras to Panama, but was ultimately shipwrecked in Jamaica for a year
01:51before being rescued.
01:52Columbus' voyages, while a navigational failure in their original goal had monumental consequences.
01:59They kicked off centuries of European colonization, leading to devastating impacts on indigenous populations through disease, war, and enslavement.
02:08B. They also sparked something called the Colombian Exchanger.
02:12Massive transfer of plants, animals, culture, technology, and ideas between the old world and the new.
02:19Think about it.
02:20Potatoes, tomatoes, and corn came to Europe, while horses, cattle, and wheat were brought to the Americas.
02:27Dis-exchange transformed diets and economies on both sides of the Atlantic, fundamentally changing life for billions of people,
02:34and setting the stage for the modern world we live in today.
02:44See you next time!
