00:16Hey guys, it's me, Concerned Ape, creator of Stardew Valley.
00:20Today is the 10-year anniversary of Stardew Valley.
00:23So, to commemorate this special milestone, I put together this video
00:27which shows off some old builds of the game, has some of my commentary about the development timeline,
00:35and highlights the various updates over the years and how Stardew Valley has changed over time.
00:41So, I hope you find it interesting, and here we go.
00:53So, Sprout Valley, 2012.
00:56So, this was the original name of Stardew Valley.
00:59It was called Sprout Valley, which is an awful name.
01:03That's why I eventually changed it.
01:05But this was probably about six months into development.
01:09I had a functioning game, but it was very rudimentary,
01:16and I would say much more similar to the Super Nintendo Harvest Moon game than Stardew Valley is today.
01:27Of course, I grew up playing Harvest Moon for the Super Nintendo,
01:30and so I was heavily inspired by it.
01:33And, you know, my first target, you might say, for this game was to essentially emulate Harvest Moon for the
01:42Super Nintendo.
01:44That was my starting point, and then I wanted to expand a bit from there.
01:50As you can see, the pixel art basically looks like crap,
01:55but there are some things, like the bus there, that essentially made it into Stardew Valley.
02:03The basic design was there even six months into development,
02:08and, you know, Stardew Valley took four and a half years to release 1.0.
02:13So, we can watch this for a little bit.
02:16You'll notice how it looks similar to Pelican Town.
02:22Some things are basically unchanged, but then other things are quite odd.
02:30Pierre's got his daily wallpaper and flooring on display.
02:41Those portraits are kind of hideous.
02:45Sometimes I wonder, you know, if I had just released this game after six months,
02:51where would I be right now?
02:56Somehow I don't think that the game would have taken off.
02:59So, look at Clint.
03:03But, you know, this was like a part of essentially a training process for me.
03:09It was my education on being a game developer.
03:13I do think there's something special about the naive perspective of a beginner.
03:17It's untarnished.
03:19It's fresh.
03:20It's primal.
03:21And you can't really recapture that once you have experience.
03:26There's the original Gunther.
03:28Green hair in the sprite.
03:29Brown hair in the portrait.
03:32I don't know what I was thinking.
03:37And the character movement speed is insane.
03:39I'm sure you guys would love that in Stardew Valley.
03:42I'll have to get you on Way of the Wind Part 100.
03:50Alright, let's show you the old mines real quick.
03:52The mines are one of the areas of Stardew that have gone under a lot of changes.
03:56It's probably the most changes of any, at least, gameplay element.
04:04However, some concepts have been there from the beginning.
04:08Like slimes.
04:10Slimes have always been there.
04:12Ladders down have always been there in one way or another.
04:25I guess I hadn't discovered the concept of knockback yet.
04:37The death sound has always been there.
04:40Alright, well, I think that's enough for Sprout Valley.
04:45So, let's go ahead and jump to the next earliest build that I have.
04:53So, here we have a build from 2013.
04:58I've probably been working on Stardew for maybe a little over a year at this point.
05:04And it's radically different from that previous build that I showed you.
05:09We're actually starting to see some things that look like Stardew Valley here.
05:13And I think at this point, I was calling it Stardew Valley.
05:19However, things are kind of odd.
05:21The way the farmer looks is weird.
05:22The way he's running around is kind of weird.
05:25The colors are now more saturated, which is true to form.
05:28But yet, that exact shade of Stardew Valley yellow dirt hasn't quite been established yet.
05:33But yeah, this version of Stardew Valley was basically more of like a sandbox idea.
05:41In this iteration, this was like the weirdest time for the game.
05:45I feel like it's like the Stardew Valley hit puberty here.
05:50But, um, so you would like actually buy animals and buildings from your in-game menu rather than go to
05:58Robin.
05:59And, uh, there was that farm map you just saw.
06:02Like, that was pretty cool, actually, that farm map.
06:08Now you guys are going to be mad at me that that's not in Stardew Valley anymore.
06:11But yeah, it was a little bit more of a simulation concept, I guess, than an RPG.
06:25Yeah, so back then, uh, I had item of the day and crop of the week.
06:31But, um, I got rid of that because there's this fundamental problem where
06:38you can store things in chests in Stardew Valley.
06:41So, this creates this incentive to just
06:44never ship anything until the crop is crop of the week
06:48or the item is item of the day.
06:49And I just don't think that's very fun.
06:52You don't ever want to incentivize things that aren't fun.
06:54That's Game Dev 101.
06:56Alright, you can see here it's starting to look like Pierre's.
07:01Starting to look like that old familiar shop.
07:06But, uh, anyway, maybe let's jump ahead a little bit
07:11and, uh, check out what the mines are looking like
07:15in 2013.
07:24So, this was the era of the procedurally generated mines.
07:28Um, my idea was I wanted to do like
07:33I wanted the mines to be like
07:35terraria
07:37but, you know, top-down
07:39instead of side-scrolling.
07:41And it was this
07:42you had these big procedurally generated
07:45levels
07:47and you mined into the walls
07:50and uncovered ores
07:52and secrets within the walls.
07:55which I think was a cool idea
07:57but
07:58for some reason
07:59I was just never able to
08:02really make it compelling
08:04and it was very
08:06bug-prone
08:07which
08:09it just ended up being
08:10too complicated
08:11I think
08:12it was maybe just beyond my ability
08:14I don't know.
08:15Or maybe another way to think about it
08:16was just that
08:17it was too ambitious of a concept
08:19for the scope of this game.
08:21This should have been an entire game on its own
08:24and
08:24you know, if you've played Core Keeper
08:26that's pretty much what Core Keeper is
08:28which is a cool game by the way.
08:30But yeah, when I saw Core Keeper
08:31I was like
08:32hey, someone finally did it.
08:34So
08:34cool idea
08:35but I had to make the hard decision
08:37to scrap all of it.
08:40And I spent a long time working on this too
08:42but I made the decision to scrap all of it
08:45and
08:46let's see, there's a bug right there.
08:49do a simpler approach
08:51which is the mines that
08:52are in Stardew Valley today
08:54where
08:55it's not procedurally generated
08:57there's some randomness
08:58but the levels are all
08:59designed by hand.
09:06Here we have a
09:07goblin village
09:09an underground goblin village
09:15all this content
09:16completely scrapped
09:17from the game
09:24and I mean
09:25I don't regret it
09:26just because something
09:27sounds cool
09:28just because the idea
09:29is cool
09:30doesn't mean
09:31that it's going to be fun
09:32or it's going to be
09:33the right idea
09:33in practice.
09:36Oh and by the way
09:38Goblin
09:39underground goblin villages
09:40are not
09:41canon
09:41alright
09:42anything you see here
09:43from previous builds
09:45is not
09:48considered to be
09:49canonical
09:50Stardew Valley
09:51alright
09:52let's move on
09:52to yet another
09:53more recent version
09:54so this one's from
09:56sometime in 2014
09:58this was the title screen
09:59at that time
10:00I mean
10:00it's kind of glitching out
10:01but it had these weird
10:03buttons on the side
10:04and then when you
10:05loaded the game
10:06there was this
10:08loading screen
10:09which was kind of
10:10reminiscent of like
10:10the Sims
10:16but I mean
10:16it doesn't look
10:17too much different
10:18than the last build
10:18but you start to see
10:19some more Stardew Valley
10:21things come into place
10:22like the
10:23the
10:24what we call
10:25the daytime money box
10:26in the upper right
10:27is there
10:29um
10:30Willy's shop
10:31is basically
10:31looking like
10:32it always does
10:33we now have
10:34the community center
10:35in the game
10:36and it looks
10:37essentially
10:38exactly the same
10:39as it does now
10:40I'm not sure
10:41why there's this
10:42ugly yellow color
10:43it's ugly yellow
10:45filter over the
10:46entire screen
10:47you'll notice
10:48Clint was a little
10:49less doughy
10:50back then
10:55and Joja Mart
10:56was not yet in town
10:58Pat Mouse
10:59wasn't a thing yet
11:08and the inside
11:09of the farmhouse
11:10was like
11:10very static
11:12I don't even think
11:12you could move
11:13any of the furniture
11:14which allowed me
11:15to have the pixel art
11:16look kind of nice
11:17with some shading
11:18and stuff
11:18but I mean
11:20I think it's important
11:20that you can decorate
11:21your house
11:22people love that
11:42so this is from
11:43August 2015
11:44which is only about
11:45a half year from launch
11:46but still
11:47there are a ton
11:48of things
11:49that are like
11:49not finished yet
11:50so this shows
11:52just how
11:53much Stardew Valley
11:54kind of came together
11:55at the last moment
11:57the farmhouse
11:58still has this weird
12:02protubents
12:02sticking
12:03protubents
12:04is that a word
12:05this weird
12:06thing
12:07this nose
12:08sticking out
12:09right next to the door
12:10I don't know
12:10what I was thinking there
12:14but
12:16obviously
12:17I got rid of that
12:18at some point
12:20the mailbox
12:21is still on the left
12:22so that must have
12:23changed that
12:24you know
12:24it's like
12:24I did a ton of work
12:26in the last
12:26like six months
12:28I think I was just
12:29at the point
12:30where I knew
12:30it was so close
12:31I needed to finish
12:32the game
12:33the finish line
12:34was so close
12:36and that's what
12:37gave me the drive
12:38and the motivation
12:38to make all these
12:40little changes
12:41in the last six months
12:43to prepare the game
12:44for release
12:45I think one of the
12:46most notable things
12:47was just that the
12:47farmer still
12:48had this weird
12:49goofy look
12:51this is not what
12:52the farmer looks like
12:53in Stardew Valley
12:54so
12:54that was like
12:55a last minute change
12:58which I'm really
12:59glad about
12:59because
13:00I don't really like
13:01the way this looks
13:02looks kind of stiff
13:03kind of like a
13:04Pinocchio
13:05or something
13:12yep
13:13there's the old
13:15classic
13:17Stardew Valley
13:17mines
13:18so
13:18that's pretty much
13:20the last
13:20convenient footage
13:22that I have
13:22from before launch
13:23I do want to give
13:24a shout out
13:25to my two
13:26beta testers
13:27Bexy
13:28and Siri
13:28who helped me
13:30find a ton
13:31of bugs
13:31in the game
13:32here's a screenshot
13:33from Bexy's Farm
13:34this is one of the
13:35first ever
13:36Stardew Valley farms
13:38looks pretty good
13:40thank you guys so much
13:50so here we are
13:52February 26th
13:532016
13:55the culmination
13:57of four and a half
13:58years of work
13:59the launch of
14:01Stardew Valley
14:02a lot was riding
14:03on this
14:03because if it flopped
14:04I would have been
14:05four and a half years
14:06behind my peers
14:07with no money
14:08no job experience
14:09would have been
14:10pretty depressing
14:12I stayed up all night
14:13the night before
14:14because I found a bug
14:15and I had to fix it
14:16because the game
14:17was set to launch
14:18the next morning
14:19so that was
14:20highly stressful
14:26on the first day
14:27of launch
14:28Stardew sold
14:29just under
14:2940,000 copies
14:31which was already
14:32beyond my wildest
14:33dreams
14:34after that first day
14:35I knew that this
14:37was going to be
14:37a big deal
14:39I knew that
14:40I could be a game
14:41developer from now
14:42on
14:44it was really
14:44happening
14:46of course I didn't
14:47really have time to
14:47think about that too
14:48much because there
14:49were immediately bugs
14:50being found in the
14:51game
14:52and I spent the
14:53next
14:54I think I released
14:55a patch every single
14:56day for the next
14:57four days after
14:58launch
14:59pretty big
15:00patches too
15:02but see back then
15:03the game was a lot
15:04simpler
15:05there wasn't
15:06different languages
15:07there wasn't
15:08multiplayer
15:10it was just me
15:11working on it
15:12so I could crank
15:13out a
15:13it was only on
15:14steam
15:14I didn't have to
15:15make a console
15:16build
15:16I didn't have to
15:16make a mobile
15:17build
15:17so I could crank
15:19out updates
15:19at an extremely
15:20fast pace
15:29I spent the
15:30rest of that
15:30spring
15:31fixing every
15:32bug that
15:33people found
15:34and trying to
15:35add meaningful
15:37improvements to
15:37the game with
15:38each patch
15:39I was releasing
15:40patches pretty
15:40rapidly
15:41some notable
15:42examples were
15:43grandpa's shrine
15:45and his
15:45evaluation
15:46when the game
15:47first came out
15:48grandpa was
15:48extremely harsh
15:49and he would
15:51kind of
15:51he was almost
15:52a little bit
15:52rude
15:53you know
15:53if you didn't
15:54do a good
15:54job
15:54he would say
15:56man I should
15:57have bequeathed
15:58the farm to
15:58my other
15:59grandkid
15:59and there was
16:01no way to
16:01reevaluate
16:02if you didn't
16:03get you know
16:04the four spirit
16:04candles the first
16:05time forget
16:06about it
16:06so I softened
16:08that and I
16:09also added in
16:10the way that
16:10you can you
16:11know have him
16:11come back and
16:13reevaluate
16:14here's another
16:15example on
16:16March 20th
16:17I added unique
16:18dialogues for
16:19all the spouses
16:20so I don't
16:22remember this
16:22but apparently
16:23before then
16:24every single
16:25spouse had
16:26identical dialogue
16:27and people still
16:28complain about
16:29this but there's
16:30been a ton of
16:30work on the
16:31spouses over the
16:32years and it
16:33just goes to
16:33show that you
16:35know even though
16:36Stardew Valley was
16:37launched in my
16:39mind it was not
16:40its ultimate form
16:41that's why I kept
16:42making updates
16:43that's why I
16:43essentially as soon
16:44as these bug fix
16:45patches were out of
16:46the way I
16:47immediately started
16:48working on the
16:481.1 update
16:49which is a
16:50major the
16:50first major
16:51content update
16:58so I'll just
16:59briefly go over
17:00the updates
17:01if you want to
17:02see everything
17:02that's been added
17:03to Stardew Valley
17:03I recommend
17:04going to the
17:05version history
17:06page on the
17:06Stardew Valley
17:07wiki but
17:08yeah the 1.1
17:10update added
17:11four new farm
17:12types and
17:13kind of established
17:14the tradition of
17:15every update
17:16adding new farm
17:17types to the
17:17game
17:19and notably
17:21it added Shane
17:22and Emily as
17:22marriage candidates
17:23which you the
17:24community voted
17:25on on a poll
17:27that I put on
17:27Twitter
17:281.2 just added
17:31new languages to
17:32the game
17:32it wasn't really
17:34a content update
17:35I hadn't yet
17:36established the
17:37tradition of
17:371.x updates
17:40always being
17:41major content
17:42updates
17:44so then we
17:44had the 1.3
17:45update which
17:46most importantly
17:48added multiplayer
17:49to the game
17:50fulfilling the
17:52promise I had
17:52made to the
17:53players before
17:54Stardew Valley
17:55even came out
17:571.3 also added
17:59the winter night
17:59market and a few
18:01other things
18:02one thing about
18:031.3 is
18:04the multiplayer
18:06was actually
18:07developed you
18:07know not by
18:08me it was put
18:09in by a guy
18:10named Tom
18:11Coxon who
18:13went on to
18:13create a game
18:14called Cassette
18:14Beasts you
18:15should check it
18:15out thanks Tom
18:16but um yeah
18:19it's this started
18:20this new era
18:21where I was
18:22open to getting
18:23help on the
18:24actual development
18:25of Stardew
18:26Valley which
18:27allowed for
18:28bigger more
18:29ambitious updates
18:30so then there
18:31was the 1.4
18:32update which
18:33added the movie
18:34theater fish
18:35ponds 14 art
18:37events to all
18:38the spouses and
18:40many other great
18:41things to the
18:42game then we
18:44had the 1.5
18:45update which
18:46added a huge
18:48end game
18:48location ginger
18:50island the
18:52qui quests and
18:53this idea of
18:54perfection
18:57the volcano
18:58which allowed
18:59you to enchant
19:00your weapons
19:00and tools
19:03and many
19:03other great
19:04things
19:08then there
19:08was the 1.6
19:09update the
19:10most recent
19:11update kind
19:12of a return
19:13to the valley
19:14after 1.5's
19:15ginger island
19:161.6 added
19:18some new
19:19systems some
19:20end game
19:20content it
19:22kind of filled
19:22in some gaps
19:23that I feel
19:23like were
19:24present in the
19:24game and
19:25it added some
19:26old ideas that
19:28I've had for a
19:28long time like
19:29green rain
19:32so those were
19:34all the major
19:34updates to
19:35Stardew Valley in
19:36a nutshell of
19:36course there were
19:37some intermediary
19:38updates in between
19:39all of those
19:40major ones which
19:41sometimes added some
19:43important things to
19:43the game but
19:44those were the
19:45major updates
19:46now what's next
19:48well as I've
19:49already announced
