Previously a painter and trained in the visual arts and photography, Raymond Red, one of the pioneers of Philippine alternative cinema, sees light as a guiding force in his work. Many of his films are experimental and exist outside the mainstream commercial system. In 2000, he won the Palme d’Or for Short Film at the Cannes Film Festival for "Anino," becoming the first and only Filipino to receive the prestigious award.

Across a four-decade career that includes works such as "Bayani," "Himpapawid," and "Kamera Obskura," Red’s experience extends far beyond independent cinema. His latest film, "Manila’s Finest," is set to premiere at the 2025 Metro Manila Film Festival. He has also directed commercials and music videos — work he views not as a setback, but as a necessary and even productive compromise.

In this episode of The Rolling Stone Philippines Interview, Raymond reflects on how working across formats instills discipline and sharpens craft in a time when cinema — whether viewed on a phone or on the big screen — is everywhere.
