In this video, we take a look inside the bag of Spain's Sergio Garcia! The leading point scorer for Europe in the Ryder Cup was kind enough to give us a quick tour through his bag during the LIV Golf UK event in July, where he now plies his trade as captain of the Fireballs team.
Transcript
00:00Right, we are here at the JCB Golf and Country Club for the Live Golf UK event, and I've got
00:04Sergio Garcia with me.
00:06What a pleasure, and we're going to go through your bag in just a second.
00:09First of all, you're a contract-free agent now, so I've known you as a Titleist player, a Callaway player,
00:14a TaylorMade player over the years, and now you've got the freedom to build whatever bag you want.
00:19How have you found that?
00:20Yeah, no, it's obviously, I mean, I still have a great relationship with TaylorMade, I mean, with other companies,
00:26but, you know, I've played so many years with TaylorMade, so my bag is predominantly TaylorMade at the moment,
00:32but, yeah, no, they take good care of me, so I think it's good.
00:35It looks like they do take good care of you.
00:37So, starting with the driver, we're in the QI10 Max from TaylorMade, so that was the big story about their
00:42release,
00:43huge MIY numbers, 10K of inertia, how have you found that? Why have you ended up in the Max model?
00:47I tried the LS, and it was good, but I felt like this one, even though probably I don't hit
00:54it quite as far,
00:54I feel like it's super easy to hit, so it's giving me a lot of confidence, and at the end
00:58of the day, for me,
00:59if I have confidence, I feel like I can swing a little harder, and at the end of the day,
01:03I don't lose that much distance,
01:04but more than anything, it feels very easy club to hit.
01:06Have you done anything internally with hot melt or anything?
01:10You've got a spinny driver I found in testing.
01:11Yeah, no, I mean, I'm fine, like, what I've done is I'm playing a much lower lock than I usually
01:19do,
01:19so I have it, it's a 9 degree, I have it probably, like, at 8, maybe just under 8,
01:25so that obviously brings the spin down for me a little bit, but I like the way it comes out.
01:31Perfect.
01:31Then we've got one of my favourites here, the new mini driver from TaylorMade, and the copper version.
01:35Have you found that, and why have we ended up there?
01:36Yeah, I just got it.
01:38I just got it this week.
01:39I've been wanting to try it, and, you know, I'm putting it in play for the first time, so we'll
01:45find out.
01:45Yeah, so we'll see how it goes.
01:47I was watching you hit the couple, it looked pretty good.
01:49Feels good, yeah.
01:50Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:50It's good.
01:50And then we go from there down into 5-wood, the QI10 Tour, and we have Ventus Black throughout here.
01:56Yes.
01:568X, and we're ascending weight.
01:578, 7, 6, yeah.
01:58Perfect.
01:59So you just like to keep a constant feel at that top end of the bag?
02:01Yes, I like to keep the same shafts as much as possible.
02:07Obviously, on the irons, I have the LA shafts, the LA golf shafts, but on the woods, I have all
02:13the Ventus,
02:14and I don't like to have too many different, so I just kind of keep the same feelings.
02:18On the LA golf shafts, I've seen so many people in the bag at this Live event, more so than
02:23I've seen at other events with the LA golf.
02:24Is that, what's the deal there?
02:26We've got reps on Live that are pushing that LA golf shaft more, or you just found yourself in it?
02:31Not really.
02:32I found myself in it.
02:33I tried the last year in Orlando, I remember.
02:36I think it was kind of beginning of last year.
02:40It felt really, really good, so because of that, I decided to put it in every single club, in every
02:45single iron, and I'm very happy with it.
02:48Really stable, right?
02:49Yes, very, very stable.
02:50Perfect.
02:50So we're in P770 in the 3-iron, into the blades, into the P7MVs, so just presumably in the 3
02:57-iron for a bit more forgiveness, a bit more pop.
02:58Yeah, just a little bit, like you said, a little bit more pop, a little bit easier to hit than
03:03a normal 3-iron, and I can use it kind of like a driving iron kind of stuff.
03:07Perfect.
03:07Three wedge setup, stock pitching wedge, 54, bent to 52, I see.
03:12Yes.
03:12And then 58, T-grind.
03:14Skip over the others, get to T-grind.
03:16I see so many people in that T-grind.
03:18Why is it?
03:18Well, funny enough, I have a funny story about that because obviously, my first three years on tour, I was
03:26with Tiles, and obviously, I was using Tiles.
03:28Tiles wedges, then I went to Tiles, and I switched to Tiles wedges, and I remember in 2020, when I
03:35became a free agent again, I was like, you know, I want to get back to the bulky wedges, and
03:40Aaron Drill from Tiles, I talked to him, and he said, I'm going to send you a couple, and then
03:47I'm going to send you one, I just want you to try it.
03:49So he sent me, I think it was like a 10-degree bounce, 8-degree bounce, and he sent me
03:55the T-grind, which is 4-degree bounce, and I tried it, and I loved it from the beginning.
04:01I was like, oh, this feels really, really good.
04:03So then I talked to him, and I said, I really like the T-grind.
04:07And I said, well, funny enough, that's the grind that you were using when you were with us in like
04:1299, 2000, 2001.
04:13So it's kind of a retro without realizing it.
04:15That's really cool.
04:16But there's so many people.
04:18Scott, you should have every What's in the Bag I do on our podcast, so many people in T-grind,
04:21so that's really interesting.
04:23Putter, now this is a throwback to me, never compromise.
04:25So this was a brand from my youth.
04:28I know.
04:29Thoughts here?
04:30Well, there's a couple of things.
04:32So obviously, Goldfire, the Swiss brand that I was using at the beginning of the year, the carbon fiber one,
04:39they're making me a smaller version of it.
04:41I really like it, but it's making me a smaller version, so it takes a few months to do it.
04:46So with Bobby Dean, a guy that I work with my pattern in Austin, I wanted to find a pattern
04:53that hit the ball hard.
04:55So then, like, usually my problem with pattern is if I feel like I have to hit the ball, then
05:01I get out of rhythm.
05:02So I wanted something that came out fast.
05:05And we tested a few until I get my, obviously, my Goldfire one.
05:09And this one was the one that felt and reacted the best.
05:13And it's been good for the last three months or so that I've been using it.
05:17Okay, brilliant.
05:18And what ball are you in, Sergei?
05:19The TP5X.
05:21Yeah, the new one.
05:22I've done well testing it myself and I'm in that.
05:24It's brilliant.
05:25Yeah, which I like it because I've always been a TP5 player, the black one.
05:31Yes.
05:32But this one, this X, feels like it spins a little bit more for me, so it allows me to
05:39hit more shots.
05:40Cool.
05:40Any go-to training aids you have in the bag that you always go with?
05:43Not really.
05:43You're a training aid guy?
05:45Cool?
05:45Old school.
05:46Old school.
05:46Love it.
05:47Sergei Garcia, that was brilliant.
05:48Thank you very much.
05:49Playing well this week.
05:49Thank you, Joe.
05:50Thanks.
05:50Bye-bye.
05:50Bye-bye.
