00:01On this day in space. On February 26th, 1966, NASA launched its new Saturn 1B rocket on its
00:08first test flight. Also known as the uprated Saturn 1, the Saturn 1B was built for the Apollo
00:13program. With a more powerful upper stage, it was designed to carry the Apollo Command and
00:18Service Module and Lunar Module into low Earth orbit. NASA used the Saturn 1B for flight tests
00:23early on in the Apollo program, but this type of rocket never actually launched astronauts to the
00:27moon. For that, they used an even more powerful rocket, the Saturn 5. The first flight of the
00:32Saturn 1B was uncrewed. Among other things, the mission tested the rocket's propulsion,
00:37guidance, and electrical systems. And that's what happened on this day in space.
