00:04Hi I'm Dan Grieve, head professional here at Woburn and we've got a beautiful wet summer's
00:10day here at Woburn and we are going to talk about the muddy lie which I know for a lot
00:15of you amateur
00:15golfers is a real difficult shot because it's so difficult to get that contact to get that ball
00:21first contact from these lies is really tough so it's really all about setup so if we get the setup
00:25right like all lies it becomes a lot easier so you'll see in some of the other videos we talk
00:30a
00:30lot about the bounce and how the bounce is really your friend and for almost all short game shots
00:35that's the case apart from this one really where it really becomes your foe so we need to make sure
00:40we're using more of the leading edge more of the sharp leading edge to make sure we can get that
00:44contact into the back of the ball when we start using too much to bounce off these lies the club
00:49just goes into the turf and the ball just goes the other two in front of you so like all
00:53short game
00:53shots it's critical that we get the setup right so if we uh if we look at this face on
00:58you'll see that
00:58the book the key here is the ball position so we need that ball position to be just back of
01:02center
01:03and let's make sure that the chest bone is a good couple of inches there in front of the ball
01:07because
01:08that really dictates the low point in the swing a lot of club golfers i see they get way behind
01:12it
01:13from these sort of lies so it brings a low point back and it's very easy to hit the ground
01:16first
01:17so the key there is ball position just back of center let's make sure that the chest bones ahead
01:22and shoulders nice and level as well when you start tipping this right shoulder also makes the
01:27low point appear too far behind the ball so nice level shoulders get the chest bone in front of the
01:32ball and the key here is that leading edge getting into the back and really think about your finish
01:37when you have a long finish you tend to release more of the bounce when you have a short finish
01:42or curtailed finish with a little bit more pace it just allows the hands to stay a little bit more
01:47ahead of the club head and get that ball first so let's see if we can play once a little
01:52a little
01:52bit like this
01:53a nice ball first contact it will go lower the ball will be fairly hot but that's the sacrifice for
02:11making sense of getting the quality of that strike okay this is a really tough shot here okay but it
02:15is
02:16real life we do get it sometimes so really wet muddy lie to a tight pin so the pin there
02:21is only about
02:22four yards on now of course there's options here and really i probably would advise most of you to play
02:27a low shot there with maybe with an eight or nine iron running it into the bank trying to take
02:31some
02:31pace off the ball but you know sometimes maybe you can't do that it might be a bunker there for
02:35example
02:35so you've got to try and play the higher shot so one of the things you can do is get
02:39the club selection
02:40right i've got my um high toe 60 degree low bounce lob wedge here and what i really like about
02:46this
02:46wedge is how it's really shaved down on the toe so the bounce really is measured in the middle of
02:50the sole and and the toe there it's shaved down so i can use that to my advantage here so
02:54i'm going
02:55to set up with the toe lower than the heel i'm going to face a little bit open but really
03:00put that
03:01toe down and address it slightly out the toe of the club as well i'm going to stand quite a
03:06bit
03:06way to the left here so a good sort of 30 degrees open with my feet and i'm going to
03:10swing the toe
03:11across the ball and i can hit just before the before it and the toe will nip under it and
03:17hopefully
03:18hit it nice and high so let's give that a go so high hands toe down and we're going to
03:24work across the
03:24ball that nice high shot and hopefully in up and down so really tough shot made easy by using the
03:33right
03:33club and the right technique
