Juliane Koepcke was born in Lima, Peru in 1954 to two German zoologist parents who raised her in the Amazon rainforest at their research station Panguana. On December 24, 1971, she and her mother boarded LANSA Flight 508 to spend Christmas with her father. The plane flew into a severe thunderstorm. Lightning struck the fuel tank. The aircraft broke apart at 10,000 feet. Juliane fell two miles still strapped to her seat and survived. She then walked alone through the Amazon jungle for eleven days with a broken collarbone, no food, and maggot-infested wounds before being found by local fishermen. She is the sole survivor of LANSA Flight 508. She later became a wildlife biologist and has dedicated her life to conserving the Amazon rainforest.
