00:00Young Niueans here we struggle right with our culture and our language and
00:03it's like you just look at the stats there's 11% of us out of all of the
00:06Niueans in New Zealand and Niue that can speak Wangho Niue. If we lose our
00:09language that means we'll lose our identity. I've always felt like the
00:13minority amongst the minorities. Bro there's more students here at Manari
00:17Ohai than there are people in Niue ever. Whenever you find ourselves Niuean it's like a little
00:21oi my love. New Zealand provides us with a lot of support and security but that
00:27comes with strings attached. 300 years and we've been named by this fellow Captain
00:32Cook that Niue is a savage island. We are conned by the food and the taste of sweets
00:38from New Zealand eh. I think the relationship with New Zealand is one of
00:42dependence not independence. You can't be independent while still putting your hand up.
00:48What's next for us as Niuean people? There were dire predictions in 1974 that it was
00:54only a matter of time before the last person to leave the island will have to turn out the lights.
