Here are ten games that were so hard, I can't think of a single person who actually managed to beat them!

00:00Since the dawn of gaming, there have been platformers, shooters, and RPGs that were
00:04infamous for being brutally unfair. Even though this level of difficulty has historically deterred
00:11casuals, there are definitely veteran pro gamers and wannabe pro gamers who have flocked to them
00:17to see if they're up for the challenge. Sure, it's frustrating to see that game over screen
00:21again and again, but it makes it more satisfying when you finally triumph. That is, if you can
00:27finally triumph. Despite the fact that millions of people have played the vast majority of these
00:32entries to death, a lot of people probably haven't seen the end credits. If that's you,
00:38hit me up in the comments. We'll give you a little congratulations. I'm proud of you. I'm proud of
00:42you already. You're here. I'm proud of you. Okay, let's keep going with the video. I'm Jess from
00:46World Culture and here are 10 absurdly hard games you never beat. Oi, you. Yes, you. Do you want
00:54to stay safe and browse freely? Well, NordVPN is running an unbelievable deal at the minute that
01:00gets you up to 76% off subscriptions and three months free. Just scan the QR code in this video
01:06or click the link below and it's all yours. Fury. No matter how relentless a game is or gets,
01:13usually you at least have a little breathing room in the beginning so you can get used to exactly what
01:18it is you're playing, how it runs, and the mechanics that you'll be expected to master.
01:23But Fury doesn't bother with that setup. The vibrant shoot-em-up is structured entirely around
01:28bosses so there's no filler baddies to practice on. With that in mind, you're expected to master
01:33melee combat and bullet hell dodging in tandem before you've even gotten the hang of the basics.
01:38Several bosses can only be beaten with parrying, so you might as well call it a day if you haven't
01:44perfected that one. Worse still, there's no breathing room here. Once you've beaten one
01:48adversary, no matter how much of a trial it was to get to the end of that fight, you have
01:52to move
01:53right on to the next one. Much like Cuphead, every boss fight has multiple phases, so players have to
01:59memorize a plethora of combat strategies. This is easier said than done, especially when an antagonist
02:05introduces new techniques that are counterintuitive to how the earlier part of the battle played out.
02:10The difficulty can skyrocket at any moment, since these brutes can unleash surprise attacks
02:15or change your surroundings with little to no warning. Fury is a solid title, but casual gamers
02:21should probably give it a miss. Dragon's Lair 2. Time Warp. Dragon's Lair stood out in its time,
02:27since it plays out like an interactive movie. You watch fully animated scenes and make timed inputs
02:32to avoid obstacles and navigate around your surroundings. If you do miss time any of those quick-time events,
02:38you'll find yourself plunging into a pit or being eaten by a monster.
02:42As ruthless as the first installment was, it was nothing compared to Dragon's Lair 2 Time Warp.
02:48Although the sequel follows the same structure, there's one caveat that catches everybody off
02:52guard. You see, players need to collect all the hidden treasures that are scattered throughout
02:56the game if they want to unlock the final level. These appear during specific sequences,
03:01sometimes for less than a second, and you need to press the right button if you want to grab them.
03:06What's worse is there's no indication that these collectibles are mandatory,
03:09and they often rock up when you least expect them or during a hectic moment when you're not
03:14really thinking about picking up a treasure you're thinking about, well, not dying. If you fail to nab a
03:19single artifact, the game resets before reaching the last section, meaning you have to play the whole
03:25thing again. And if you miss one of the artifacts a second time, nobody will blame you if you decide
03:30to
03:30quit then and there. MDK2. You know a video game is particularly unforgiving when you can't beat it
03:36despite having infinite lives and a bunch of checkpoints, such is the case with MDK2. In hindsight,
03:43BioWare's underrated title should have got a lot more love since it has inventive level design,
03:49hilarious absurdist humor, and sharp graphics that still look great today. On the whole,
03:54the only criticism MDK2 suffers is how hard it is. Rather than ramping up the difficulty gradually,
04:00players are dumped into insta-kill scenarios that are rarely telegraphed. Whether it's the boss's
04:05puzzles or the platforming, every aspect of the gameplay seems to have been designed by a sadist.
04:11Yes, there are checkpoints, but that actually doesn't make the levels particularly easier because
04:16they are unnecessarily long. Even though it's refreshing how you can play as three heroes with
04:22radically different play styles, the decision adds to the challenge because you get so used to playing
04:27as one individual that it's jarring when you switch to another, since you need time to adjust to their
04:32abilities and skill sets. Sadly, you do not have the time to adjust because before you know it,
04:37a bunch of new enemies' traps and instant-kill things are thrown at your face and you need to
04:42try and survive them, and mostly, you probably won't. Getting over it with Bennett Foddy.
04:47For some players, the hardest thing imaginable is battling a legion of enemies or a screen-filling
04:52boss. For others, it's solving a multi-faceted puzzle within a tight time constraint. However,
04:58getting over it with Bennett Foddy focuses on one of the most difficult and insurmountable
05:03challenges in all of video games, and that is the absolutely terrifying realm of physics.
05:09The unconventional climbing title follows a philosopher stuck in a metal cauldron who must use his
05:14sledgehammer to swing around obstacles, terrains, and structures. Even though the gameplay would be
05:19significantly easier if you could use his legs, the creator deliberately disables that ability,
05:25and as a result, you have to awkwardly swing, drag, and fling yourself around, often with very little
05:31control or understanding of where it is you'll land. The further you climb, the more nerve-wracking
05:36everything gets. Quite apart from the fact that it gets harder the higher you go up,
05:41a single misstep, or miss-swing, I suppose, can send you all the way back down to the ground where
05:47you begun. If that wasn't enough, the creator Bennett Foddy narrates throughout your playthrough,
05:52philosophizing about frustration and failure while you're trying not to lose for the 50th time.
05:58This blend of unrelenting mechanics, cruel design, and existential narration, which might help you,
06:04but might well hurt you, creates an experience that feels less like a game,
06:09and more like a trial in suffering. Super Meat Boy Forever
06:12Super Meat Boy feels like the most unbeatable platformer imaginable, since every level involves
06:18tiny platforms, moving hazards, and instant death mechanics. On top of that, there are no checkpoints.
06:25To be fair, players can conquer Super Meat Boy if they just take their time with each section,
06:30memorizing the patterns of the obstacles. It might take a long time, but players should be improving
06:35on every playthrough, allowing them to prevail if they just stick with it.
06:39Too bad that strategy goes out the window when we talk about Super Meat Boy Forever. Now in this
06:44particular title, the levels are randomly generated, so you can't memorize all the little bits and pieces
06:50of each level that's going to kill you, or has in the past, 1, 2, or 10 times. Because of
06:55this,
06:55you'll need to take your time and plan carefully before moving on to each section. Unfortunately,
07:01the ship to do that has sailed as well. Super Meat Boy Forever is an auto-runner,
07:06so you have no time to strategize, only to react. Unless you have the reaction time of a heavily
07:12caffeinated fly, you're probably not going to get far. Super Meat Boy definitely faced criticism for
07:17how hard it was, but boy was it a walk in the park compared to its sequel. Enter the Gungeon
07:22Enter the Gungeon is a fast-paced bullet hell game where players explore a constantly shifting
07:28fortress in order to find a legendary gun that can destroy the past. Boasting 300 weapons,
07:35beautiful retro art, and addictive roguelike gameplay, Dodge Roll's title is an absolute blast.
07:41Despite receiving high praise pretty much across the board, a lot of reviewers did emphasize
07:46Enter the Gungeon's barbaric difficulty again and again and again. One of the things that makes
07:52the game's difficulty so particularly brutal is the randomized loot system. Although randomization
07:57does play a big factor in a lot of roguelikes like Hades and Dead Cells, it's possible to win in
08:02those games even if you're stuck with minor enhancements. But if you don't get the best
08:07arsenal in Gungeon early on, you might as well start from scratch. Gungeon demands pixel-perfect
08:13dodging, especially in later floors. Even players with flawless reflexes are sure to struggle with
08:19evading projectiles, since said projectiles blend in with the background. Also, there's no easy way
08:25to heal. If you're taking a bunch of hits, especially early on, there's not really a solid way to come
08:30back. Shops do sell things occasionally that can boost your health back up, but they're often not
08:35worth it due to the high cost. Enter the Gungeon is still worth checking out, but you have to accept
08:40the fact that winning is highly unlikely. F-Zero GX
08:44Due to its dynamic gameplay, gorgeous level design, and head-bopping tunes, F-Zero GX is a highlight in
08:50the series and one of the most underrated driving games ever. Having said that, it is impossible to
08:55discuss this one, even in all of those wonderful things that are absolutely true and enjoyable
09:01about it, without mentioning how very, very tough it is. In this racer, each driver's machine moves up
09:08to 2,000 kilometers per hour. If you mistime a turn while moving that fast, it could result in your
09:14death. It's so tricky to control your vehicle while it's breaking the sound barrier that you can easily
09:19sail off the road, as you can imagine. Though beating the game normally is taxing, trying to
09:24complete any cup on master mode is a Herculean task. AI opponents rubber band like crazy, allowing
09:30them to catch up no matter how fast you go. On harder modes, computer-controlled racers slam into you
09:36at any opportunity, and even if they don't knock you off the track, they can send you to last place,
09:41which gives you no chance of recovering. Most annoying of all, though, the AI drive on master
09:46mode with near-frame perfect execution. For that reason, you can still come in at 17th place,
09:52despite making F-Zero mistakes. I'm sorry, that was horrible. I'm really sorry. Even though you're
09:57expected to complete every race on master mode, winning one cup is pure torture. If you have,
10:03again, report to that comment section. Ikaruga. Bullet hells are a whole other breed of punishing
10:09games, since the genre involves being constantly bombarded by projectiles in every foreseeable
10:14direction. Unless you have heightened coordination and a gift for multitasking,
10:18you kind of don't stand a chance. But even the biggest bullet hell enthusiasts might not be cut
10:23out for Ikaruga. What makes Treasure's sci-fi blaster stand out from its peers is the fact that
10:28you fly a ship that switches between black and white polarities, allowing you to absorb black and
10:34white projectiles. Now, there are so many bullets on screen at once, it is impossible to advance by
10:39just trying to dodge them all. As such, you have to allow yourself to be hit while absorbing the
10:44appropriate projectile. It's a neat idea, since the puzzle-like element compels you to have to be
10:49tactical when to reverse the polarity. Although Ikaruga can be completed in under half an hour,
10:55few people have reached the end credits, and even fewer have beaten it on higher difficulties.
11:00After all, when you're being blasted with nine trillion lasers all at once, it is easy to slip
11:05up, so it's kind of understandable why a lot of players decided they just put this one down.
11:10Monkey Island 2. LeChuck's Revenge. One problem that even the best point-and-click adventure games
11:15suffer from is illogical puzzles. Whether it's Myst or Grim Fandango, there are times where players
11:21can't help but think, how was I meant to figure that out? There's an argument to be made that no
11:26puzzle title has stumped the masses quite like Monkey Island 2 LeChuck's Revenge. One of the
11:32things that makes this one particularly difficult is that the pirate caper dumps a ton of items on
11:37you, many of which have a purpose that you cannot envision for the life of yourself. The gameplay
11:41involves a hefty amount of fake-outs, red herrings, and dialogue trees that go nowhere. The non-linear
11:48structure also makes it arduous to know exactly where you're supposed to go, and it forces players
11:53to remember dozens of potential leads at once. Worst of all, or best of all, if you love a tricky
11:58point-and-click challenge, a lot of puzzles involve combining unrelated items, performing nonsensical
12:04actions, or using objects in unintuitive ways. At one point, you have to use a wrench on a valve
12:10to shut down a pump, and naturally any rational player would look around for a wrench. The problem
12:15here being, there's no wrench in the game. To complete this section, you need to find a monkey
12:20and place him in the valve, like a monkey wrench. Monkey wrench. Get it? Well, if you did, you'd feel
12:26super smart, and if you didn't, you're probably like the vast majority of people who played Monkey
12:30Island 2, and would say there was no way they were getting to those end credits without a guide. If
12:35you
12:35did, again, well done you. Ninja Gaiden. Even though gaming franchises that originated in the 1980s
12:41had earlier entries that were tough as nails, the difficulty in recent installments tends to become
12:47a lot more reasonable. However, Ninja Gaiden went in the opposite direction. Despite the fact that the
12:53classic side-scroller was already a nightmare in its day, Tech Ninja's Xbox reboot was somehow less
12:59forgiving. Button mashing in combat gets you absolutely nowhere, since enemies can only be defeated by a
13:04very clever and fine-tuned combination of dodges, attacks, combos, and the like. And if you don't
13:11pull it off, well, that's going to be your game over screen. Bosses are another story altogether,
13:16since they can kill you with a single strike. Due to limited resources, you need to get good fast,
13:22or you won't make it past the first level. That's not all though. Soon after its release,
13:26Tech Ninja announced they were bringing out an enhanced version, called Ninja Gaiden Black.
13:31This contained bug fixes and additional features. This was welcome news for a lot of gamers,
13:36especially ones who really wanted to play through the game but were finding it much too hard. As it
13:41was expected, this would give the developer the opportunity to make the game easier. And it would
13:45have. But they didn't. They made it harder. In Ninja Gaiden Black, enemies are more reactive,
13:50and come in in increased numbers. Certain weapons and tactics were nerfed, making it tricky to exploit
13:56enemy weaknesses. And just in case that wasn't enough, the game added a new mode called Master
14:02Ninja, which makes the classic mode feel like a breeze. Honestly, the only way Ninja Gaiden could
14:08be more challenging is if the enemies killed you in real life. That's the end of our video,
14:13and we don't have any videos about enemies killing you in real life because that would be absolutely
14:17terrifying. But we do have plenty more lists about games that are absolutely nails down a chalkboard
14:23difficult. So if you enjoy playing games like that or just hearing about them because you don't want
14:28to play them, make sure you check out other lists on our site. There should be a video on screen.
14:33You
14:33can click it and check it out and you'll enjoy it. I promise. I'll catch you next time. Thanks for
14:38hanging out.
