Eileen Gu had just won her sixth Winter Olympic medal when she was told the news about her grandmother's death

00:00I know you said that was the last question, but I just want to say something really quickly.
00:05The reason I was late is that I just found out that my grandma passed away,
00:09and she was like a really, she was a really big part of my life growing up,
00:15and someone I looked up to immensely.
00:18She was such a strong, she was a fighter,
00:22and I think what's so interesting is that a lot of people just cruised through life,
00:25but she was a steamship, like this woman commanded life and she grabbed it by the reins
00:31and she made it into what she wanted it to be.
00:34And she inspired me so much.
00:36The last time I saw her before I came to the Olympics, she was very sick,
00:38so I knew that this was a possibility.
00:41I didn't promise her that I was going to win, but I did promise her that I was going
00:44to be brave,
00:45like she has been brave.
00:46And that's why I keep referring to this theme of like betting on myself
00:50and like being brave and taking risks.
00:52It actually goes back to that promise that I made my grandma.
00:54And so I'm really happy that I was able to uphold that,
00:58and hopefully do her proud, but it's also a really difficult time for me now.
01:03So I really apologize for being late, but like that's what was going on.
