Transcript
00:00LeBron James was made for the regular season.
00:03He's a regular season dynamo.
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at 10 times pundits managed to make a total
00:09mess of their picks, predictions, and overall opinions of the sports they cover.
00:12Kobe was there to entertain the fans, not to win games.
00:17Micah Richards' Champions League predictions
00:19Pre-tournament predictions can be a tricky business.
00:21Arsenal Bayern, the Arsenal!
00:24But for the former Man City defender Micah Richards, he could not have made a bigger
00:27mess of his 2024-25 Champions League quarterfinal picks if he tried.
00:31According to Richards, Arsenal, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona would all make
00:36it out of their respective ties to meet in the semis.
00:39Semifinal!
00:40What are we gonna go with?
00:41What are we gonna go with?
00:44Just Atletico, sorry Barcelona!
00:46In the end, all four of those teams lost, and it was Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Borussia
00:51Dortmund, and Bayern Munich who ended up in the Final Four.
00:54Even if he was guessing randomly, Richards would only have around a 6% chance of getting
00:58all of his picks wrong, an all-time great prediction blunder.
01:01Just down!
01:02Six!
01:03He went like that!
01:04MMA was a far more barbaric sport in its earliest form in the 1990s, with very few rules compared
01:09to its modern counterpart.
01:10The problem was with the old UFC was McCain came out and said, you can't put on these
01:16unregulated fights with no athletic commission.
01:19But as Dana White and the Fertitta brothers got involved and began to clean up the sports
01:23image, things changed.
01:24But during that push for mainstream acceptance, many pundits from other sports, mainly boxing,
01:28openly wrote mixed martial arts off as a fad and nothing more.
01:31Then we went to our first UFC event, and we sat in the crowd and started to go, man, imagine
01:36if they did this, and imagine if they did that.
01:38This thing could be big.
01:39Jump forward to the 2020s, and the UFC have built a brand that is right in the thick of
01:43the mainstream.
01:43A brand that has been bolstered by huge global superstars like Conor McGregor, John Jones,
01:48Ronda Rousey, and more.
01:49So, yeah, unfortunately for them, they were pretty wrong about MMA's staying power.
01:53It just is what it is.
01:54Tony Mandarich can't miss OL Prospect.
01:57Earning your place in the history books as an all-time draft bust is one terrible way to
02:01be remembered.
02:01But this sportin' turned out to be a Trojan horse.
02:05The hype behind Tony Mandarich ahead of the 1989 draft was truly on another level.
02:09Experts called him the greatest offensive line prospect of all time.
02:12And so, when the Green Bay Packers drafted him, it was like a dream come true.
02:16Tony Mandarich is the draftee.
02:19This guy, once in a lifetime.
02:21Turns out he wasn't anywhere near as suitable for the top level as expected.
02:24Four underwhelming years in the NFL were enough for the Packers to release him.
02:28Though he did mount to come back in 96 with the Colts.
02:30He retired in 98 due to a shoulder injury.
02:32The gold standard for draft busts in any sport.
02:35In all the hype and all the euphoria, forgot to check whether he could play football.
02:40Jamie Carragher.
02:41Holland picked the wrong club.
02:42A lot of people wanted to hate on Erling Haaland when he moved to the Premier League.
02:46You called Haaland overrated recently?
02:48Yeah, I stand by that.
02:49I think he is.
02:50Nobody could doubt the stats in his goal-scoring record.
02:52But it's wild to see how many fans and pundits dismissed him as an overrated goal poacher.
02:57Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher even openly questioned whether Haaland had picked the right
03:01club.
03:01He may have actually picked the wrong club.
03:04To actually get the best out of him.
03:06By the time the 2022-2023 season was finished, however, there were no doubts left over his
03:11pedigree.
03:12With 36 goals, Haaland became the highest single-season goal-scorer in Premier League history, ending
03:17the campaign with 52 goals and 53 games across all competitions.
03:21In the end, to say he was a success story would be putting it mildly.
03:24It's an amazing feeling.
03:26I think you are the only one that maybe knows how to score a lot of goals.
03:30Dietmar Hamann doubts Claudio Raniere's appointment.
03:32It's hilarious to look back on it now, but when Claudio Raniere was announced as the Leicester
03:37City coach, many pundits saw it as a poor decision by the club's board.
03:41Did the choice of Raniere surprise you?
03:43Shot.
03:44Absolutely shot.
03:45Couldn't believe it.
03:46Raniere had solid experience, but nothing seemed to indicate that he was the right choice
03:49for this struggling Premier League.
03:51Former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann was one of the most vocal skeptics of Raniere's appointment.
03:56Little did we know that he was about to pull off the most unlikely miracle in the
03:59history of English football.
04:00Despite being amongst the biggest underdogs for the title, Raniere led Leicester to their
04:05first Premier League trophy, pulling off an upset victory that will undoubtedly be
04:09marveled at several decades from now.
04:11Leicester City are champions of the Premier League.
04:15The greatest story ever told has its happy ending for Claudio Ranieri and his players.
04:22Max Kellerman.
04:23Tom Brady will fall off a cliff.
04:25Tom Brady truly is a freak of nature when it comes to his longevity in the sport of football,
04:29so it's only natural that a few pundits would have voiced their doubts about him over the years.
04:32Tom Brady's just about done.
04:34When Max Kellerman very bluntly stated in 2016 that Brady, at 39 years old, was doomed to
04:38fall off a cliff, he was really putting his neck out there.
04:41He is going to fall off a cliff.
04:43Unfortunately for Kellerman, Brady had another Hall of Fame-worthy career still in the tank,
04:47and over the next five years he won another three Super Bowl rings, utterly destroying
04:51Kellerman's opinion through his excellence on the field.
04:53I stand down.
04:54He is the goat, and the boat, and everything else.
04:58Max Kellerman puts Kobe Bryant's on All-Decade Worst Team.
05:01Turns out multiple All-Star selections aren't enough to avoid being placed on Max Kellerman's
05:05All-Decade Worst Team.
05:06It's not that Kobe's on the third team that's the outrage, it's that he's on any of these
05:12teams at all that is the outrage.
05:14For Kobe Bryant, he seemingly wasn't doing enough on the court to convince the iconic boxing
05:18pundit that he wasn't a bottom-of-the-barrel player.
05:20Somehow Kellerman was so unimpressed with Kobe in the 2010s that he decided to ignore all
05:24of the positives in his performances when he was healthy and fit.
05:27What team would he be on?
05:28He would be on the All-NBA Worst Team, actually.
05:31The take was so outlandish that Kellerman's co-host, Molly Karam, decided to walk off set
05:35as soon as he made the claim.
05:36Was he simply looking for attention?
05:38Possibly.
05:38But this remains an all-time stinker.
05:40And what I'm contending is no player as ineffective offensively as Kobe was at that point,
05:46as inefficient, was ever allowed to shoot that much.
05:50Ever.
05:51That makes him the most destructive.
05:52And he couldn't play any defense.
05:54Terry Venables on Messi's aerial ability.
05:57The truly great athletes know how to address criticism head-on.
05:59In this case, Lionel Messi took that notion quite literally.
06:03After veteran manager Terry Venables commented on Messi's inability to score with his head
06:07compared to the more physically imposing Cristiano Ronaldo, Leo decided to do something about it.
06:12And so he went out there in the 2009 Champions League final against Manchester United and
06:16made Venables look incredibly foolish for ever bringing it up.
06:19Not only did Messi prove his well-roundedness, but he later went on to call this headed effort
06:23his favorite ever goal.
06:25Skip Bayless.
06:26LeBron is more Robin than Batman.
06:28Skip Bayless is widely known to be one of LeBron James' biggest detractors.
06:31I'm going to give LeBron a break today because he did have a triple-double, including 19 rebounds.
06:38So I'm going to give him a D-minus.
06:40And that's D as in dog, minus.
06:42That is.
06:43It doesn't appear to be anything personal, but ever since he burst onto the scene,
06:46Skip has been looking for any opportunity to knock him down a few pegs.
06:49Sure, LeBron made that a little easier in his early days due to his tendency to fail at the final
06:53hurdle.
06:53I saw a Prince James that once again was crumbling under the pressure and the expectations to be King James.
07:00For a while, many people totally wrote off his chances of winning an NBA championship ring.
07:04And Bayless was right at the front of it all.
07:06He famously said that while James has Batman-level talent, he's a lot more of a Robin when push comes
07:10to shove.
07:11He's Robin more than he's Batman.
07:13He's Pippen more than he's Jordan.
07:16Four championships later and Bayless has been made to eat crow in more ways than one.

07:36You can't win anything with kids.
07:38Nine times out of ten, Alan Hansen might have been right when he famously said that you can't win anything
07:42with kids in football.
07:44I think they've got problems. I wouldn't say they've got major problems.
07:47Unfortunately, he just so happened to be writing off the chances of a generationally gifted squad of Manchester United youngsters.
07:53If you have players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and David Beckham talking out for you, it doesn't matter what
07:58age they are.
07:59You can't win anything with kids.
08:00You look at that line at Manchester United today and Aston Villa at quarter past two when they get the
08:04team sheet, it's just going to give them a lift.
08:06Sure, United lost their first game of the season to Aston Villa, which was the catalyst for the comment.
08:10But seasons are not won and lost on match day number one.
08:14Of course, Hansen was proven spectacularly wrong when United went on to win the title, becoming one of the truly
08:19great Premier League squads in the process.
08:22As I said, I think we definitely deserved it.
08:23You know, the young lads have come in and been absolutely fantastic and square for the club.
08:26But what incredibly short-sighted punditry opinion do you think is worth a mention?
