Sam De'Ath runs through 8 of the best long game training aids on the market well worth trying this winter if you're looking to improve your swing!
Transcript
00:00With competitive golf drawing to a close, now is the time to work on those lingering swing floors.
00:05Now there are a wealth of training aids on the market that can help you do so,
00:09but finding the right one for you can often be challenging.
00:11In this video we're going to talk about the flexible ones, the bendy ones,
00:14the ones that help with club face control, as well as swing plane.
00:17And if you like any of the products that you see in this video,
00:20they will be linked out in the description below.
00:23So which training aids are best for you? We've tested eight of the best long game training aids.
00:28Look out for number three, it's an absolute game changer.
00:31Let's get on to the video.
00:37So we're going to start with the best value training aid.
00:40This is the G-Rip Mentor and the idea behind this is that it gives you perfect hand placement.
00:46Scotty Scheffler is not an ambassador for this product, but he certainly should be getting paid
00:50because he uses this for every practice session and every range session before competitive play.
00:55It just neutralizes your grip and makes sure that you keep a neutral club head.
00:59The idea is that you can't get too strong or too weak because of these ridges in the grip
01:03that keep your hands in the perfect place.
01:05Now the brand itself recommend that you make 20 to 30 swings just with the product on the end of
01:10a club
01:11to make sure that you get used to the feel of how things work with this.
01:14And then once you're used to how that feels and how it swings with that grip on,
01:19you can then move to a range and begin to hit balls away.
01:22It's a great way to iron out any flaws within your grip and get you hitting more neutral golf shots.
01:35The next training aid we're going to talk about is the Champ Key Swing Trainer.
01:38Now this is for all you slicers out there.
01:40For anyone who comes over the top and really struggles with that big left to right ball flight,
01:44this is the training aid for you. It's also perfect for warming up because of the weight of it.
01:49It actually is quite heavy and will really stretch out and loosen out those muscles before your round.
01:55And it's a great thing that you can just use on the first tee to get a quick warm up
01:59in.
01:59But why it helps you if you slice the ball is because of the weight.
02:02So when you get to the top, what it will naturally do is just drop your hands a little
02:06and from there you can really come from the inside and just make a swing on a neutral plane.
02:11It's also great for tempo. If you get too quick, it will never keep up.
02:15And if you go too slow, you'll just feel it dragging.
02:17So this is a great all-in-one training aid, but it's perfect for those of you that slice the
02:21ball.
02:22Okay, I'm going to stop what you're doing right there.
02:24Make sure you like the video and subscribe to Golf Monthly's YouTube channel before we move on.
02:29Have you done it?
02:30Right, let's get back to it.
02:32Now this is the one you've been waiting for.
02:34This is the hottest training aid on the market right now.
02:37You might have seen Rory McIlroy has been using this for the past couple of months.
02:41And it's a great way of getting control over your arm rotation as well as club face rotation.
02:47Now, as you can see here, it just slots on top of your arms here.
02:50And these rods really just help it keep in place.
02:52But there's also great use for these rods.
02:55When you're filming yourself at the driving range hitting balls,
02:58you set your tripod up.
02:59And when you're filming your swing,
03:00you really get a great idea of where these rods are placed.
03:04You want them to sit in a horizontal line across your arms here
03:07when you're at the top of the backswing.
03:08And obviously, this line will just be pointing up over your right shoulder.
03:12It shows that you're in a very neutral position with your arms
03:14and you haven't overextended out of your right elbow and you're on plane.
03:19Now, another way in which this training aid is really useful for is keeping your arms out in
03:26front of your body.
03:27It really helps you sync up the arms with the body on the backswing,
03:30stops them falling behind and getting stuck, which is a really bad swing tendency I have.
03:35The thing I love most about this training aid though is how it helps me really compress my iron shots.
03:40I feel like I can really hold the angle and therefore just turn onto the ball with a bit more
03:44hinge
03:45and therefore get better strike out of my irons and more distance.
03:49You kind of want to start off by just hitting kind of smaller pitch shots with that hold,
03:53really ingraining that swing thought of compressing the ball by keeping that angle between your wrist
03:59and your arms and your arms out in front of you.
04:01Once you feel comfortable with that, you would just chuck the training aid to the side and then you just,
04:05you would start working through slightly more full swings,
04:09keeping that angle and compressing the ball to help you hit better iron shots.
04:14Okay, let's talk about speed.
04:16Everyone has been chasing it the last couple of years,
04:18thanks to Bryson DeChambeau hitting close to 400 yard drives.
04:22Now we've tested all the best speed training aids, including the stack system
04:25that has helped Matt Fitzpatrick gain considerable yardage on the golf course,
04:29as well as the speed sticks by super speed.
04:32But I found the most beneficial and actually the most simple to be the rip stick.
04:36Now underneath this head cover is just this shaft here that has three interchangeable weights
04:43underneath it.
04:44And the idea behind this is that you can quickly loosen and fasten this to take out weights at a
04:50time
04:50in order to change the weight of the golf club.
04:52Now, the reason behind this is that you can then work on over speed training or under speed training.
04:58And what that would be is a heavier or lighter shaft.
05:01Now, a standard driver weighs about 300 grams.
05:04With all of these in, you're weighing just over 400 grams.
05:07So you can imagine how much heavier that feels.
05:09If you can get used to swinging something heavier, faster,
05:12you're naturally going to swing something lighter, even faster.
05:15So I've been using the rip stick for a little over a month now.
05:19And what they actually recommend is using this for 10 minutes a day, three times a week,
05:23and doing a few simple drills that you will find on their website.
05:27Now, one of those drills is a step drill.
05:30So you would just step out your left foot and step into the ball and swing through.
05:35The others that you might have seen on other sites would be on your knees swinging around.
05:39That one I find particularly challenging, but I have felt that I've increased my club head speed.
05:44And that has been proven on TrackMan by three mile per hour already in a month.
05:49So I'm hoping if I continue using this, I'm going to gain considerable speed
05:53and therefore hit it past all my mates when I play out on the golf course.
05:57So the next training aid we're going to talk about is the me and my golf true grip glove.
06:03Now, this is a fantastic training aid for all of you that hook the ball.
06:07And the reason behind that is the silicone indicators on here really help you neutralize that grip
06:13and stop you getting really strong with your right hand.
06:18That is the cause of most people. Hook the ball is getting really strong.
06:21And therefore, when you get to the top of the golf swing, that club face gets really flat and closed.
06:26Therefore, when you come down in transition, it's already pointing left.
06:29The ball is going to start left and it's probably going to keep going left.
06:33Now, one of the reasons why I love this glove so much is it's actually USGA conforming.
06:37So that means you can use this in competitive play.
06:39It's got the blue silicone indicators on the palm
06:42that the grip just simply places in. And then once over the top, you've got a knuckle indicator
06:47as well as a V grip indicator here with your fingers.
06:51From there, you could just place the right hand on top over that V and make some swings.
06:56You'll see that it naturally just really gets that club face pointing back over your shoulders
07:02in a really neutral position. It's a training grip that I love.
07:07And the fact that it comes in at around $25 makes it an absolute steal.
07:11And it's guaranteed to change your game.
07:14Now, this is the best training aid for swing play.
07:18This is the SureSet training aid.
07:19And if you liked the G-Rip Mentor, you're going to love this thing.
07:23This is a golf grip training aid on steroids.
07:26It's already attached to the device.
07:27And the idea behind this is on the way back,
07:30it's going to really help you keep your width and stop you collapsing.
07:33But not only that, when you turn around and get to the downswing, it's going to really help keep you
07:37on plane.
07:38How it's going to help you do that is through this ball and the connection that you have with it.
07:42If you're someone who casts and gets over the top of the ball, you're just going to see that device
07:47fall out.
07:48And vice versa, if you're someone who really collapses and drops those arms in behind,
07:53gets stuck on the way through, you're going to see the ball fall out to the left as well.
07:57So the idea behind it is that you keep that width the whole way.
08:00It's going to really help you drop that club in the slot, compress your iron shots,
08:04and really get you turning through with some aggression.
08:07So out of all the training aids that I have tested,
08:10the G-Force Swing Trainer is definitely the best for sequencing.
08:14This is a really, really flexible shaft.
08:16And the idea behind that is to help you with your sequencing.
08:20Now, a lot of amateur golfers get really quick and snatchy from the top.
08:24And what you'll see is that iron really casts out in front of you.
08:27And you're going to see instant mistakes with your ball flight and strike.
08:32If you learn to swing this correctly, it will really help your tempo and sequencing
08:36and get that lower body activated and actually turning first on the downswing with your upper body
08:43coming after, gaining complete separation and therefore helping you improve your strike.
08:48You'll get a quick understanding here.
08:49If I go to the top and get really quick with the backswing, you can see how on the downswing
08:56there,
08:56I've grounded out really early, hit a fat pull.
08:59And in this wet winter condition, that ball wouldn't go that far at all.
09:04However, if I sequence this up really well, turn my lower body out of the way,
09:09and let the club deliver in afterwards, we should see a much more flush strike,
09:17and therefore a straighter ball flight.
09:18It's a great way to gain instant detection on your sequencing.
09:22And for that reason, I love the G4 Swing Trainer.
09:25Okay, this is the best training aid for Swing Path.
09:28And that is the Speed Trap 2.0 by Eyeline Golf.
09:32Now, the reason I love this training aid so much is the immediate feedback it gives you.
09:36If you're coming over the top or you're getting stuck too much on the inside,
09:40you're going to hit these foam poles and they're not going to go flying
09:43because they are attached and it's quite a sensible idea,
09:45but it would be quite funny if they did go flying.
09:47So everyone else on the range knows that your path is miles out.
09:51But what I love about this is that it comes with this board
09:54that essentially has different lines on it for full swing, pitching and chipping.
09:59And depending on if you're botting out too early,
10:01you can actually move the ball position slightly further back
10:04to really force yourself to get a bit steeper so you miss that board
10:07and make sure that you clip the ball before the turf.
10:10I'll give you a quick demonstration here
10:12and hopefully I don't completely embarrass myself.
10:15And hopefully my path is actually working.
10:20You can see there, I've slotted straight through the foam rails
10:24and actually clipped one away really nicely thanks to this board.
10:28Now where it is perfect for swing path is if you're someone who's wanting to
10:33learn how to hit more of a draw, you can take these ones out here.
10:37And what is actually really handy is that this training aid does come
10:40with a booklet that shows you instruction on how to set this up
10:44to favour the shot shape that you're trying to deliver.
10:47So if you're trying to hit a draw, you would have it this way.
10:51So the front left and the back right pole are still in place
10:54and it will get you coming more from the inside.
11:00As you can see, that really helped me produce a tight little draw there.
11:03But if I was practising hitting draws in real time,
11:06I would remove these two pins that I'm not using here.
11:08They do look a little clunky and they do kind of get in the way.
11:11It does only take a matter of seconds to remove though.
11:13If I was producing, looking to produce a fade, I would swap the pins round
11:17and therefore promote a left swing path,
11:20getting that ball starting left and moving back to the right.
11:22If I did even find this too easy, I could actually move these pins in closer together like so.
11:30And you'll see naturally it promotes a really tight path for that club to move through.
11:39Clearly I'm not there yet, but if you get your hands on this training aid,
11:43maybe you'll get there before me.
11:45Hopefully this video has given you some really good inspiration as to what training aids could
11:49improve your game this winter.
11:50As always, if you like any of the products in today's video,
11:53the links for them will be in the description box down below to find the best prices in your area.
