Senior ministers and officials could face jail if found to have deliberately misled the public. Some MPs want the measure extended to all parliamentarians.

00:12could carry a sentence of up to two years in prison. It would apply to heads of government
00:18departments, civil servants and public officials, including police and NHS staff, if they intentionally
00:24act in a seriously improper way. Backbench MPs and peers would be exempt. More than 30 MPs are
00:32backing this amendment to extend the measure to all members of both houses. Ministers are facing
00:37calls to reconsider the scope of the bill before it returns to the Commons for further debate.
