00:09All right, kids, let's all stay together.
00:12We've seen lots of amazing things from the history of aviation,
00:16but I've saved the best for last.
00:19Kind of ironic, because this was a great first.
00:22There was a time when only birds had the power of flight.
00:25But then the Wright Brothers came along and invented the very first airplane.
00:32This is the Wright Flyer of 1903, the plane that gave us the first moused flight.
00:40Um, don't you mean manned flight?
00:43No, son, the first moused flight.
00:46Would you like to hear the story of that courageous mouse?
00:49Oh, yes!
00:50Tell us, too!
00:51Well, it all started in the Wright Brothers Bicycle Shop in Dayton, Ohio.
01:09Wilbur, do you see what this bold little mouse is doing?
01:14How rude!
01:15No need to be alarmed, Orville.
01:17I'll call your worthless cat.
01:19Thomas, please attend to that meddlesome mouse.
01:38Get that mouse, Thomas!
01:49Did you see that, Orville?
01:51I did, Wilbur, I did!
01:53I think that mouse knows something of aerodynamics.
01:59And he's terrifically good at outsmarting Thomas.
02:02The combination of those skills will help with our experiments.
02:06Let's begin right away.
02:11I hope the mouse finds our box kite useful.
02:14Look, here he comes!
02:16And your cat is close behind.
02:25Look, Wilbur, the kite's working!
02:28Let's just hope your cat doesn't create too much drag.
02:33Woo!
02:34Woo!
02:35Woo!
02:36Woo!
02:36Woo!
02:37Woo!
02:37Woo!
02:41The mouse caught a thermal updraft.
02:54A perfect landing.
02:56What excellent flying.
02:59Quick, brother, let's return to the shop.
03:03Thomas, pick up that kite.
03:11From kites, the Wright brothers moved up to full-sized gliders, big enough to carry a man.
03:21As well as pull a cat.
03:28Now, the Wrights were ready to make a plane that could take off under its own power.
03:33But before they built a full-sized version, they tested models in a device they called a wind tunnel.
03:40I simply cannot figure out what is wrong with the flyer.
03:44Don't worry, Wilbur. We can run more tests after lunch. I've made bouillabaisse.
03:58What do you think of courseGs?
04:00I'm a cool engineer, I've made bouillabaisse.
04:00Ohhh, no!
04:39I don't know.
04:48Oh dear, something's wrong with the wind tunnel.
04:52Wilbur, is our plane all right?
04:54Great Scott, the model's fine, and with only two wings.
04:58Oh goody, a biplane.
05:04I've got you.
05:12With the design of the right flyer completed,
05:15the crew packed up and traveled to the testing fields in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
05:23This propeller is broken, and we need two to fly the plane.
05:27Well then, we just need to figure out how to fix it.
05:58It's flying!
06:00Where did the mouse find another propeller?
06:03It's wonderful!
06:04It's thrilling!
06:05It's... it's coming right at us!
06:09Run!
06:17Don't just stand there, Wilbur!
06:19Take my picture!
06:23And that's just how it happened on December 17th, 1903.
06:27Oh, the humans will get all the credit.
06:30But it was a mouse who made the first flight.
06:33But don't you have any proof?
06:35Some corroboration?
06:37Isn't that the way it happened, Tom?
06:40Yep, that's pretty much it, Jer.
06:47Everybody will meet back here in 15 minutes.
06:51I hope it will be.
06:51Thank you so much, and I can, and I'll see you later.
06:51Bye!
06:52Bye!
06:52Bye!
