Ford - Built for the bush - Aussies aim to lead global race in remote vehicle automation
Transcript
00:00Hello, I'm Matt Sullivan, I'm the International Markets Group Engineering Director
00:04and I'm here today handing over the fantastic keys
00:07to an autonomous vehicles in rural, remote and regional Australia project.
00:12This is an opportunity for Ford Motor Company to participate in taking
00:17autonomous vehicle technologies from urban environments into rural settings.
00:21One of the use cases that came up very quickly in our discussion with a farmer
00:27was to be able to monitor and survey areas when they are bushfire prone
00:33and usually it's done at night, so it takes a huge toll on the workforce
00:38to just monitor the environment and the day after to operate on the field.
00:43We were going out and visiting a lot of customers.
00:46There was a huge opportunity for autonomous vehicles in some of their environments,
00:51particularly some of the high risk, you know, you talk about firefighting,
00:55you talk about some of the farmers, but it was really useful.
00:59And with Ranger being such a tech-savvy platform,
01:03going the next step to become an autonomous vehicle was very easy.
01:07Swinburne is part of this project and we are delighted to work and contribute
01:13towards sensor fusion and development of autonomy pack.
01:18We're really excited about this project.
01:20We are not only delivering research paper.
01:24We are delivering so that people can benefit of the improvement and the advance.
01:29And this is through collaboration with industry.
01:32This is the next evolution for our vehicles to be able to go from autonomy
01:38with Blue Cruise in an urban environment out into a rural community
01:44and take us to the next level where there are undefined roads, unsealed activities
01:50and multi-terrain environments.
