00:00According to everyone from eventual gods of mischief to Oscar-winning sensations,
00:05dodgy evil voices simply being too lazy and opting to unleash the most inappropriate jokes
00:11possible were the real reasons they ultimately took themselves out of contention for the following
00:16roles. So I am Gareth here from WhatCulture.com and here are 10 more excuses actors use for
00:22blowing major movie auditions. 10. Tom Hiddleston gets the Pirates of the
00:28Caribbean script just before a night out. While it can be a touch frustrating to have
00:33to suddenly drop everything you're doing and immerse yourself in the world of a character
00:37for hours, the chance to have your life forever changed by one out-of-nowhere audition is certainly
00:43worth that small sacrifice. That's something eventual Loki star Tom Hiddleston learned the
00:48hard way when some sides for a new little franchise by the name of Pirates of the Caribbean landed on
00:54his lap many moons ago. With the young actor promising his pal that he'd go out for a few
00:59drinks to celebrate them finishing their exams, Hiddleston eventually decided to pack the text
01:04away for the night after only a few hours of prep. Inevitably, the severely hungover and
01:09underprepared performer didn't produce his best work at the 10am audition the next day.
01:15And when asked why he didn't even bother to learn the lines for such a massive opportunity,
01:19a naive Hiddleston simply told the casting director that he only got the script at 5pm
01:25the day before. He's since learned that this is no excuse, the silly boy. You gotta take those
01:31opportunities by the balls.
01:339. Bradley Cooper Couldn't Help Turning Into Christian Bale's Batman In His Green Lantern Audition
01:38If it wasn't for an incredible performance from Christian Bale as the legendary Caped Crusader,
01:44Bradley Cooper feels he probably wouldn't have fumbled his chance to play the Green Lantern on the
01:49big screen. Before Ryan Reynolds eventually found himself in the horrendous CGI suit as Hal
01:55Jordan, Cooper read for the part too. And it was during that meeting when the star simply could
02:00not help putting on a Bale Batman voice once he donned the character's mask. Cooper would also
02:05reveal on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien that not even being told to speak in a normal voice
02:11beforehand could stop his backed sense from coming out during the scenes. Then after having a quick look
02:17at the performance he'd just produced on the monitor in the room, a rather embarrassed Cooper
02:21soon felt that his audition, one that looked like a Saturday Night Live sketch in his opinion,
02:26wasn't going to be enough to wrestle the part away from Reynolds, who Cooper admittedly claimed he would
02:31have cast if he was directing the film anyway.
02:348. Salma Hayek Was Too Lazy For The Matrix
02:37According to Salma Hayek herself, there was just one thing getting in the way of her and a part in
02:43the iconic first Matrix movie. She was lazy. Yep, we can all relate. As the Desperado star would
02:50explain during an appearance on the Red Table talk show, after jumping through many hoops in the
02:54audition process, the various ladies competing to appear in the Wachowski's flick as Trinity were put
03:00through a physical test. This consisted of a bunch of stunt coordinators from Asia coming in and putting
03:06the women through their paces. However, despite noting how she was certainly flexible and agile,
03:12Hayek felt that her inability to run around the room once without gasping for air was the main
03:17reason she didn't end up scoring a role in the franchise.
03:207. Jamie Campbell Bower's Dirty Joke Didn't Help Him Land The Harry Potter Part
03:25Jamie Campbell Bower was actually one of the many hopeful youngsters who tried out for
03:30the role of the boy who lived. And after being told to prepare a little joke for his meeting with
03:35director Chris Columbus, this confident lad felt he had just the gag to secure one of the hottest
03:40parts in the business. Bower recalled to the Happy Sad Confused podcast how he had heard a particularly
03:46filthy joke about why a fairy sits on top of a Christmas tree, with that cheeky joke focusing
03:52on the fact, you know, the plant was stuck up the thing's bottom. Sure enough, when it came time to
03:56deliver his rude fairy story, this potential Harry Potter was met with complete and utter silence.
04:03And in this future young Gellert Grindelwald's opinion, it was that crude one-liner that royally
04:08effed up his chances of putting on the legendary spectacles.
04:126. Marc Maron Had No Idea What Was Going On And Didn't Want The Part In His Avatar Audition
04:17When talking on that podcast again, Happy Sad Confused, about his surreal experience meeting with
04:24the legendary director for a part in the then-upcoming follow-ups to the Pandora smash hit
04:29Avatar, Glow star Marc Maron openly noted how the entire thing was ridiculous, and he wasn't exactly
04:35excited about the idea of moving to New Zealand for a few years to shoot. Said audition saw Maron being
04:41handed a top-secret script and being asked to read for the part of Dr. Ian Garvin.
04:46Only instead of your typical sit-down read-through, Maron ended up being thrown into a free zone as
04:52he called it, with a bunch of other folks flying around him, and reading in parts as he attempted
04:57to imagine being on a boat on camera. Needless to say, Maron admitted to having no sense of character
05:02and no idea what was happening. Unsurprisingly, the absolutely perplexed Maron didn't quite do
05:08enough to convince Cameron he was the man for the job, and while it would have no doubt been tough
05:12to
05:13turn down the Avatar director if he did unexpectedly offer him the chance to dive into this epic
05:18franchise, Maron was somewhat relieved when he received a box of cigars after the Terminator
05:23and Aliens filmmaker opted not to cast him.
05:275. Eddie Redmayne's Ridiculous Scary Voices Ruin His Chances of Being in Star Wars
05:32When he found himself in the middle of an audition for the role of Kylo Ren in the incoming Star
05:38Wars
05:38Episode 7 The Force Awakens flick, eventual Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne told the Happy Sad Confused
05:44podcast, yep they really do get all the scoops, that he opted to dramatically alter his voice for
05:49the part. But instead of blowing away those in the room with his sinister-sounding performance,
05:55this British sensation's many different embarrassing Darth Vader
06:00voices eventually resulted in casting director Nina Gold asking him,
06:04you got anything else? He did not. And it was in that moment that Redmayne likely realised his
06:10ill-advised decision to put on a ridiculous baddie voice probably just cost him one of the biggest
06:15parts out there.
06:164. Aubrey Plaza Went Full Method As The Killer In Scream
06:21With Aubrey Plaza trying to land the part of Ghostface in the popular Scream franchise,
06:26the Parks and Rec actor recalled to Liv Marks how she felt that going full method and dressing up as
06:32an actual murderer for the meeting would give her the best shot at being handed the iconic mask for
06:37one of the flicks. Only the team casting the movie actually wanted an actor you wouldn't expect to be
06:43revealed as the murderer. So Plaza sticking out like an insane sore thumb by intentionally dressing
06:49like a killer and looking terrible and frumpy for the audition in comparison with the rest of the
06:53glamorous lady she was up against on the day didn't exactly do her any favours.
06:58The role unsurprisingly went to one of the performers who didn't look like a legitimate slayer in the
07:03end, and the actor would eventually class her call to go full method as a really bad idea.
07:093. Matthew Rhys Blew His James Bond Audition With A Terrible Joke
07:14Returning to those times awkward comedy cost folks' roles, as Matthew Rhys would tell the times,
07:19he was once asked to don a dark suit and read the script for the then incoming Casino Royale flick
07:25before Daniel Craig was eventually cast as 007. And it was during that meeting for the James Bond role
07:31in the intimidating Broccoli family's office when the American's actor was asked what he'd personally
07:36do differently with the Bond franchise. Immediately wondering whether what he'd just been asked was
07:42actually a trick question, Rhys instead refrained from giving a straight answer and jogged that he'd like
07:47to give the iconic agent a limp. And silence. Rhys then decided to double down on the joke,
07:54following up with the suggestion of eyepatch? The casting team clearly weren't impressed by this
07:59potential 007's quips on the day, and opted not to hand this nervous joker a license to kill.
08:062. Martin Compton Was Dealing With Extreme Jet Lag Before His Star Trek Meeting
08:12Frustratingly for Line of Duty's Martin Compton, he'd reveal on his Restless Natives podcast that he
08:18actually explicitly requested for some time to get over the jet lag from flying all the way over to
08:22Los Angeles from the UK before being asked to come in to read for any parts. Things tend to move
08:28quite
08:28fast when it comes to meetings stateside, and Compton likely sensed he wouldn't really be able to do his
08:33best work so soon after a long-haul flight. However, when he touched down in LA at around 8 or
08:399 at night,
08:39he discovered an email in his inbox telling him that he had an audition for the role of Scotty
08:44in the then-new Star Trek flick The Very Next Day. Not only that, but the actor would also need
08:50to
08:50learn a whopping three-page monologue overnight, and he ultimately ended up heading to the wrong
08:55address the day after, a move that made him two hours late. Nightmare.
09:001. Jamie Foxx Got Starstruck Because Of Tom Cruise During His Jerry Maguire Audition
09:05A few years before the pair would produce big-screen magic together in Michael Mann's
09:10Collateral, Jamie Foxx came face-to-face with the movie legend that is Tom Cruise in a Jerry Maguire
09:16audition. And things didn't exactly go smoothly for the future Oscar winner. On top of attempting to
09:22show off to the Top Gun star by boasting about how many houses he had, Foxx soon found himself
09:27getting a little starstruck. Then, after Cruise decided to take a dramatic pause in the middle of the
09:33scene, his anxious scene partner assumed he lost where he was in the script, and foolishly tried
09:38to help him before being awkwardly told it was an intentional choice, Jamie. Simply put, Foxx never
09:43really recovered from the overwhelming feeling of meeting the big-name actor for the first time,
09:48and blames his truly terrible Jerry Maguire audition for the role of Rod Tidwell on the fact
09:53he just could not keep his cool.
09:55And that's our list. Do you have any other excuses actors used for blowing major movie auditions?
