00:00In this video today, I'm going to take you through the number one driver distance killer
00:05and how we can fix it and get some more yardage out of it.
00:16I think we can stop the video. Look at this. Straight out of the middle.
00:21And the number one killer we want to avoid is the strike location.
00:27As we know, we want to increase our ball speed to get more distance.
00:32But if we are pattering the toe, the heel, too far out of the bottom, too far out of the
00:38top,
00:38we dramatically reduce our ball speed, thus dramatically reducing our distance.
00:44But I'm going to give you three things that I want you to try and do
00:47that will increase the frequency of your centred strikes and up your distance.
00:52Now, the first thing we have to do is actually get a little bit of a monitoring going on
00:58with our strike location because we could stand there and think we're hitting the middle
01:03when we're actually not. Real simple. Dry shampoo. Great little training aid.
01:08If you're going down to the driving range or you're practising, just take a little spray,
01:12cover your face in there. And what this is going to do when we actually hit a shot,
01:16it's going to give us a reference point for where we are striking the golf ball.
01:21So simply take your normal setup, make a swing at it.
01:27And even there, I know that's going to be a little bit healy.
01:30We can see that one there. Right out of the heel,
01:33that is going to limit my ball speed and drop my distance down.
01:37So, the first thing we want to do, if you are getting too toe-y or heel-y,
01:42we want to check where we are at address.
01:46Now, one of the common things that I see from amateurs is all to do with weight positioning
01:51in their feet when we get into the setup.
01:54And if we think, if we were to place the driver and line it up to the middle,
01:59if I simply take my setup now and I move all my weight towards my toes,
02:04what that will do, once I have grip of the golf club,
02:07is actually push the heel out towards the golf ball there.
02:11And vice versa.
02:12If I were to drag all my weight into the heels,
02:15you can see that the club now comes inside,
02:18thus bringing more of the toe towards the golf ball.
02:21So that is going to limit me finding the centre of the golf club.
02:25So what we have to try and do, and the big common one I would say
02:29is that we see too many people sat in the heels,
02:31is to actually find a point where, as we address the golf ball,
02:36we feel nice and sturdy.
02:38I don't feel like I'm leaning too much over it into my toes,
02:41and I don't feel like I'm actually moving too much into my heels.
02:45So all I would simply do is,
02:47as you address it and you get the ball in the centre of the club,
02:51feel like you lock your knees up here,
02:53so your legs feel really straight.
02:55What that will do is actually level out where the pressure is in your feet.
02:59Then if you just have a slight softening of the knees,
03:02you will feel that the weight now
03:05is actually running more towards the balls of your feet,
03:08just in front of centre here.
03:10So if you imagine if I had a line down, it would sit here.
03:13It's not on the toes,
03:14and it's not too much towards the heels.
03:16We want to have it sitting just in the balls of the feet here.
03:21And then what I simply want you to do
03:22is make some really small, slow practice swings
03:27that, once you've found it in your address position,
03:30we can now swing up to the top,
03:32feel that we've loaded.
03:33But as we come down slowly into impact,
03:37I want you to feel that you're in a very similar place.
03:39Try and feel that you've not dragged away,
03:42back into the heels too much,
03:44or that you've moved too much into the toes
03:46and stood up as we're going through it.
03:49Have a few little run-throughs,
03:51feeling that you can keep that balance
03:55throughout the feet
03:56and bring the club back towards centre
03:58and just be a little bit more aware of where you are.
04:01Because if you do this,
04:03I would hazard a guess
04:04that you'll feel either one of the other
04:07too much in the heels or too much in the toes.
04:10And that is going to really limit that strike.
04:12So, club in,
04:14line up to the centre,
04:16take the address position,
04:18lock the knees,
04:19get set,
04:20and then just a slight softening of them.
04:23And we're really going to focus
04:24on trying to find that good balanced position
04:27throughout the swing.
04:32Feels better straight away.
04:33I think we can stop the video.
04:35Look at this.
04:36Straight out of the middle.
04:38Didn't have to do anything crazy.
04:40Just think,
04:41if you're moving too much heels or toes,
04:44you're going to alter
04:45where that strike location is.
04:48Another fault that we might find
04:50is all to do
04:51with whether we're hitting it too high
04:53or too low on the face.
04:55And there's two reasons
04:56for this as we go through.
04:58Number one,
04:59all to do with what I'm doing right now.
05:01You might be
05:02pegging it up
05:03far too high.
05:04You might have the ball
05:06really elevated above the club face.
05:08Or you might be someone
05:10who pegs it a little bit too low.
05:12And if you deliver
05:13a slight upward blow here,
05:16we would catch the ball
05:17a little bit too thin.
05:18And I'll just give us a demonstration of that.
05:20If I make my normal golf swing,
05:24even there,
05:24how excessively low that was,
05:27nearly missed the golf ball.
05:28It's come out
05:29right at the bottom
05:30of the club face there.
05:31So we've got to make sure
05:32we're teeing it appropriately.
05:34And there's obviously
05:35a range of castle tees
05:37that you can buy from,
05:38I think it's white to orange.
05:40Find the one that's right for you.
05:41We also have to look
05:43at our angle of attack.
05:45So what I mean by that
05:47is that
05:47as we are coming
05:48into the golf ball,
05:50we either want to be
05:52approaching it down.
05:54If we were hitting an iron,
05:56we'd want to have the ball here
05:57and the club would be
05:58delivering a descending blow.
06:00So with the driver,
06:01we want to try and see
06:02that we would hit it more on the up.
06:04So real simple,
06:06you can get a wedge like this
06:07if you wanted.
06:08But all we want to try and feel
06:09is that
06:10if we were to peg the golf ball up,
06:12a good rule of thumb would be
06:13having half
06:15the golf ball's equator
06:17above the club face there.
06:19But what we simply want to do now,
06:21if I were to line up,
06:22I want to imagine
06:23that as I'm coming
06:25through impact,
06:27I'm just feeling
06:28a gradual little rise
06:29up this ramp here.
06:31I'm not hitting
06:32down on it,
06:33which we see a lot
06:34of golfers do.
06:35We always want to hit it harder.
06:36So we start with the arms
06:37and throw the club head
06:39down into the ground.
06:40And a great telltale sign
06:42if you are that person,
06:44broken T-pegs
06:45and little divots
06:46and huge,
06:47ungainly sky marks
06:49on the top of your driver.
06:51Make sure
06:51that you can get the feeling
06:53once we're addressed,
06:55we have a slight little tilt
06:56of the shoulders
06:57behind the golf ball
06:58and our spine behind it.
06:59And we feel
07:00just in some small
07:02little practice swings here
07:03that through impact,
07:04we feel like
07:05we're just sweeping up.
07:07It doesn't have to be
07:07a drastic amount
07:08because then
07:09we'll bottom out too early
07:10and probably top it.
07:12We just want to have
07:13a little motion here
07:15where I feel
07:16I'm working up
07:18the ramp.
07:19Feel here.
07:20So as I would do that,
07:22what would happen
07:22is at the middle
07:23of that golf club
07:24would be just travelling
07:25slightly on the up
07:26and I would start
07:28to get more
07:28of an upward strike
07:30and see
07:31that I find
07:32the right location
07:33in terms of
07:33from top to bottom.
07:35So,
07:35good setup.
07:37Feel we get the tilt.
07:39And my only thought
07:40here now
07:40once I find
07:41that balance position
07:42in my legs
07:43is to feel
07:44that I just get
07:44a slight sweep up,
07:46nothing excessive,
07:47just a nice little
07:48sweeping
07:49of the golf ball.
07:53Tell you what,
07:54we take those two
07:55and again
07:57pretty much
07:58where we want
07:59just above centre
08:00slightly toe-y
08:02which brings me nicely
08:03onto my third
08:04and final thing
08:06that I want you to do
08:07if you want to try
08:08and find more
08:09of the centre.
08:10A lot of people
08:11deliver a glancing blow
08:13when we get
08:14into the golf ball
08:15and what I mean
08:16by that
08:16is that
08:17if we have
08:18a target line
08:19from ball
08:20out towards
08:21the middle
08:22of the fairway
08:22we work the club
08:24either too much
08:25from the inside
08:26to out
08:27or outside
08:28to in.
08:29So,
08:29we would be
08:30getting the club
08:31working across
08:32the golf ball
08:34and most commonly
08:35as the slicers know
08:36we work from
08:37out
08:37to in.
08:39Real simple
08:40thing you can do
08:41to try and change
08:42this when you're
08:42down at the driving range
08:43or on the practice tee.
08:45Take your golf club
08:47get a grip
08:48in front
08:49and place a tee peg
08:51and then a grip behind
08:52place another tee peg.
08:54So,
08:55we've got about
08:55two to three feet there.
08:57You can take
08:58the ball off
08:58for a second
08:59and all we want
09:00to try and feel
09:01is that we just work
09:02on a slight arc
09:04in these tee pegs
09:05so we have the middle one
09:06as where our golf ball
09:07would be
09:08and what we don't want
09:09to do
09:09is feel like
09:10we're excessively
09:11travelling
09:13inside
09:14and outside
09:15of these pegs.
09:16Just feel
09:17that you just come
09:18slightly inside here
09:20the club would meet
09:21the golf ball
09:22and it would just work
09:24back inside
09:24as we're going through.
09:26The golf swing
09:26is an arc
09:27it works inside
09:28works back inside
09:30and works back inside
09:32this way.
09:33We're not trying
09:34to change it lots.
09:35Just this simple
09:36little drill here
09:37I'm just feeling
09:38like we just work it
09:40over and around
09:41these tee pegs
09:42in a small motion
09:43like this
09:44we'll start to see
09:45that we actually
09:47get the club
09:47on a less glancing path.
09:49I would then
09:50bring your golf ball
09:51back in
09:53lower these pegs
09:54great little visual
09:55do this out
09:55on the golf course
09:56if you're at the
09:56driving range
09:57maybe a little
09:58drawing of chalk
10:00or something like that
10:01will help you
10:01but set it up
10:04find that feet position
10:06we're not
10:06unbalanced
10:08make sure
10:09we're going to
10:09approach it
10:10on the right
10:10attack angle
10:11and feel like
10:12we're just
10:13working just inside
10:14both these pegs
10:16here
10:16and then
10:17we should see
10:21that we get
10:22a lovely strike
10:24oh Joel
10:26we get a lovely
10:27strike
10:27just like that one
10:28and that
10:29is going to get
10:30your ball speed up
10:31and your distance up
10:33also it's going to
10:33limit your curvature
10:34as well
10:35so three things
10:36not drastic swing
10:38changes
10:38real simple
10:39basics
10:40make sure we find
10:41where we are
10:42in set up
10:42let's just try
10:43and get a little
10:44bit of a sweep
10:45and let's just
10:46work a tiny arc
10:47and we'll start
10:48to see
10:48that this thing
10:49becomes a fairway
10:51finder
10:52with a bit of
10:52distance for you
