On Taiwan's outlying Penghu Islands, coral has accumulated to the point that it's causing problems for navigation channels and marine habitats. Some in the community are now finding alternative ways to use the excess coral.
Transcript
00:01Around the islands of Penghu in the Taiwan Strait, coral reefs grow.
00:06They were once commonly used as a building material here, for walls and houses.
00:11But their use declined with the rise of the cement industry in the 1970s.
00:15And now, some coastal areas are seeing a buildup of coral fragments and debris,
00:21blocking harbors and affecting marine habitats.
00:52They're trying to find solutions.
00:56The Penghu County government occasionally dredges harbors and navigation channels.
01:01And researchers are working with a local marine biotechnology company to find new uses for coral,
01:07which they say has many beneficial qualities.
01:27So, while coral accumulation has caused problems in Penghu,
01:32it's also pushed people there to think about how they can put it to new uses.
