00:06Hi guys, Neil Taffin here from Golf Monthly and welcome to this iron play tips video in which
00:11we're going to be taking a look at how to hit the punch shot more effectively. I'm going to
00:15be joined by Luke Peterkin from Honma. He's a Honma's custom fitting specialist here in the
00:20UK. He's also a PGA pro and he's got some great advice on how to play this shot more effectively,
00:25more repeatably. Guys, if you're new to the Golf Monthly channel, please do hit the subscribe

00:33you're watching and comment below. We'd be interested to hear your thoughts. But let's
00:37head out now onto the golf course here at North Hans and find out about Luke's punch shot tips.
00:42Okay, so fifth hole here at North Hans. We've got about 160 yards and it's slightly into the wind,
00:48probably not enough really today to force you to hit a punch, but still a good one to be able
00:53to
00:53show everyone how to do it. Luke, what's the thinking? How do you bring that trajectory down?
00:59So again, if we use our, say, stock iron shot as a benchmark to work from, so 155 maybe a
01:077 iron,
01:08just a stock me 7 iron. So I would take then my length of swing and my swing speed of
01:14my stock shot
01:15and then dial it down a bit. So I wouldn't swing back as far and I wouldn't apply as much
01:20club head
01:21speed. Okay. Both of those already will change my trajectory quite a bit. Okay. And especially with
01:26a shot where the pin is right at the back, we've got lots of green to work with. So actually
01:30this
01:30is quite a nice shot to employ because those effects that we're going to have on our trajectory
01:34will mean that the golf will roll out that little bit more. Okay. So it's a nice shot to play
01:39if
01:39there's no danger in front of the green. We've got two green side bunkers there, but we're going to be
01:43nice in between those. And try and run it up there. So usually you'd be hitting a 7 iron from
01:47here,
01:47but you're going to club up. Yeah. Club up a little bit again to counter the fact that we've
01:51darred down the swing speed and the swing length. Okay. Let me give you a 6 iron then. Okay. Yeah.
01:56Yeah. Perfect. So not only that, there's also a couple of address changes. Yeah. A couple of setup
02:03changes. Yeah, exactly. So I would take my ball to target line and then work a little bit left of
02:10that. So basically feet slightly left. Why do you do that? So similar to where we said about the
02:18shorter pitch shots. So we're already kind of setting, pre-setting our hips into our kind of
02:22impact position because we're not using as much speed. So it gets us delivering the club in a, in a,
02:29in a consistent way. Right. Okay. In other words, I can keep my club face much more stable
02:35by keeping my hips a little bit more open with this, with this shot that we're choosing. But,
02:42but crucially, shoulders are not open to the target line. No, not, not so much at all. I'm keeping those
02:46actually fairly parallel to the target line itself. Okay. It's just the hips to give me the space to
02:52then not get into any of those type of habits where we're flipping the hands over. Okay. Good. All right.
02:57Give us a, give us a go. Okay. So slightly left. My ball position will be slightly back of centre
03:02as well,
03:03but that's about it. Shorter swing and less speed.
03:12And then it will chase up there. Perfect. So you can see from that, Luke, have another go for us,
03:17just how easy Luke makes that seem to play that shot because you're taking speed out of it,
03:22because you're taking more club, you can make a more sort of relaxed, easy going swing at it.
03:27It should be one that every golfer out there can really play and control.
03:34And it's got plenty of run on it when it's hitting the ground, hasn't it?
03:36Yeah, exactly. So we're able to cover a yardage of 155 yards, but like you're saying,
03:40in a very controlled, repeatable way. Yeah. And we can apply that to many different scenarios.
03:45So there you have it. Some great advice there from Luke on how to hit the punch shot. Really simple,
03:50really easy. Something that every golfer should be able to do. Guys, thank you very much for watching.

04:03say. Also, do keep your eyes peeled for the other videos in this series. As Luke mentioned,
04:07we've got some great advice on how to hit full and half-pitch shots, as well as some advice on
04:12how to
04:12practice, some ball striking tips to keep your eyes peeled for those. But for now, from North Hands, it's
04:17good-bye.
