00:01Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny was killed in prison using a toxic substance known as
00:08epibatidine, a highly dangerous compound found naturally in the skin of South American poison
00:15dart frogs. That is according to a joint statement by the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden,
00:24and the Netherlands which said laboratory tests on samples from Navalny's remains detected the
00:31substance. The statement noted that epibatidine is about 100 times more powerful than morphine
00:38and works by blocking nicotine receptors in the nervous system leading to muscle paralysis and
00:45respiratory failure. The five countries said the use of this toxin constitutes a violation of both
00:52the biological weapons convention and the chemical weapons convention, adding that London intends
00:58to notify the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has
01:05continued to deny any responsibility for Navalny's death, including these latest allegations,
01:11describing them as a Western propaganda campaign.
