00:01Five European allies on Saturday accused Russia of killing jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny using a toxin derived from poison
00:10dart frogs while he was held in an Arctic penal colony two years ago.
00:14Britain, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands said analyses of samples from Navalny's body conclusively detected epibatidine, a lethal toxin
00:26found in South American poison dart frogs and not naturally present in Russia.
00:31British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said UK scientists worked with European partners to determine the cause of death.
00:38Well UK scientists have worked with our European partners to pursue the truth about how Alexei Navalny died and they
00:49have found and confirmed that there was a lethal toxin in Alexei Navalny's body when he died and only the
00:58Russian state had the opportunity, the motive, the means to be able to do this while he was in prison.
01:04Russia has repeatedly denied responsibility, dismissing the latest allegations as a Western propaganda hoax, according to state news agency TASS.
01:14The Russian embassy in London also mocked the findings, asking who would believe this nonsense about a frog.
01:21Britain said the poisoning reflected an alarming pattern of behavior by Moscow.
01:26I think this evidence has shown the contempt that the Russian government has for its own citizens, its willingness to
01:35use the most dangerous and lethal of toxins and also to their attempt to silence their own citizens and any
01:46opposition in the most barbaric of ways.
01:48And we should not forget what Alexei Navalny said, because he said that we should do what the Russian government
01:55fears most, we should tell the truth, we should spread the truth, because that is the most dangerous weapon of
02:03all.
02:03Navalny died in an Arctic penal colony in February 2024 after being convicted of extremism and other charges he denied.
02:12His widow, Yulia Navalny said the latest findings provided proof that he had been poisoned.
02:19Two years ago, I was here in Munich.
02:24It was the most horrible day in my life.
02:28I came to the stage and I said that my husband, Alexei Navalny, was poisoned.
02:57The Allies said Moscow had the motive, means and opportunity to administer the toxin, and called for Russia to be
03:04held accountable.
03:05for violating international conventions on chemical and biological weapons.
03:10Navalny's death sparked protests across Europe demanding accountability from the Kremlin.
