00:08Thank you, Mr. Mayor, and thank you all for letting me be here with you this evening.
00:19I know that nothing I can say will bring your children hope.
00:26I know that no words from me or anyone can fill the silence in your homes tonight, and I won't
00:36pretend on class.
00:38But I, the leader of the opposition, the leader of all the federal parties, wanted you to hear, not from
00:47Ottawa, not through a screen, but standing here together in your home.
00:55We wanted you to hear, the Canadians are with you.
01:00We will always be with you.
01:05We wanted you to hear that whatever portion of your sadness the Canadians can bear to help to ease your
01:14heavy load, we will gladly do so.
01:18The Canadian population is with you.
01:22We will always be on your side.
01:28I've spent the last few hours in Tumblr Ridge.
01:34My colleagues, I've sat with families, first responders, friends, neighbors, who've had to live through something that no one should
01:48ever have to hear.
01:51We listened, and we felt what's always defined this community.
01:59People caring for each other.
02:02That is who you are.
02:06In tough economic times, you didn't leave.
02:09You stayed.
02:10You helped your neighbors find work.
02:13You kept the lights on at the rink.
02:16The doors opened at the school.
02:18When the wildfires threatened, you checked in on the seniors down the block.
02:22You loaded trucks.
02:23You made sure that no one was left behind.
02:27And when the unimaginable happened on Tuesday, you were there again.
02:35First responders at the school, less than two minutes, teachers shielding their children.
02:45You held each other as you're holding each other right now.
02:50This is grace.
02:52It's what we do for each other.
02:55It's what we receive from each other.
02:58Open hearts when the world falls apart.
03:04Tumblr Ridge is full of grace this evening.
03:10Tumblr Ridge is full of grace this evening.
03:14The grace of grace this evening.
03:17I want to speak for a moment.
03:22But those we lost.
03:26Abdel Monsa.
03:28A bright, shining, smiling, ambitious young man who loved school so much that he teared up when his father suggested
03:38homeschooling.
03:41So he went walk.
03:44A bright, resilient, vibrant, caring, strong, 12-year-old loved art, singing, playing with your siblings.
03:53Tiki Lampard.
03:55Tiki Torch.
03:56Young woman, powered by love and happiness.
03:59You loved your siblings.
04:00Painting, cooking, crafts.
04:01K-pop, demon hunters.
04:06Ezekiel Schofield.
04:08A hockey player.
04:10Who always had a smile on his face.
04:15Kylie Smith.
04:18Beautiful, kind, innocent soul.
04:21An artist.
04:22Who dreamed of studying and drawing.
04:32Who, on Tuesday, went to Tumblr Ridge Secondary School so that students could learn.
04:38Who stayed to protect.
04:40There's no greater act of love.
04:45Tonight, Maya and Paige are in B.C. Children's Hospital in Vancouver and we're praying for them and the others
04:51who are wounded.
04:55Just as we pray for Jennifer and Emmett who are taken from their hope and they too deserve to be
05:02warned.
05:05I'd like to share one other thing with you this evening.
05:10In 1989, a young woman was sitting in a classroom in Montreal when a gunman opened fire.
05:16She was shot four times.
05:19She survived.
05:21Fourteen others of her friends and classmates did not.
05:24And in the weeks that followed, still recovering from her wounds, she made a decision to go back and finish
05:30her degree.
05:32It wasn't easy.
05:33It took years.
05:35The pain didn't disappear.
05:39It never fully has.
05:41But she built a life.
05:43She became an engineer.
05:45She raised four children.
05:47And now she serves with my colleagues in the House of Commons.
05:51And this week she spoke through tears about their children.
05:55I share her story not because healing is simple.
06:00It's not.
06:02Not because there's a timeline for grief.
06:05There isn't.
06:06No one can tell you how to share your burden.
06:12But that woman, Natalie Pauvot, is proof, living, breathing proof, that it's possible to endure the unendurable, that the horror
06:20of what happened doesn't have to be the end of what is to come.
06:34And that's true because you don't just give grace.
06:50Grace that fills this community, this extended family, gathering in the cold and holding candles for all of your children.
06:59And the grace from across Canada.
07:03When we leave here tonight, and some of you go back to quiet houses, and some of you go back
07:10to empty rooms, please know that you're not alone.
07:17But when you wake up tomorrow, and the world feels impossible, know that millions of Canadians are with you.
07:26When the cameras leave and the quiet sets in, know that we still will be here.
07:33And know that we shall need you too.
07:37Because Canada is a community that relies on each other's grace.
07:44Because we may that grace bless us all.
08:02Now I would like to end.
