00:10The
00:11United States Army presents
00:13The Big Picture
00:15An official report
00:17Produced for the armed forces
00:19And the American people
00:21Now to show you part of the
00:23Big Picture, here is Sergeant
00:25Stewart Queen
00:36One hundred years ago
00:38A momentous event occurred
00:39Known to historians as
00:41The tragic war of brother against
00:43Brother, the Civil War
00:45Became one of the darkest moments in our
00:47History. Out of this period
00:49We have selected two stories to show
00:51You. The first is called
00:53Matthew Brady. Brady
00:55Was the first pictorial historian
00:57Of any war
00:58And his pictures live on today
01:00To recall yesterday's history
01:03The second story
01:04Is called Clara Barton
01:05And shows a segment from the life
01:08Of a dedicated woman
01:09During the Civil War
01:12Now let's go back through
01:14History
01:14With Matthew Brady
01:22The camera's eye
01:25The magic eye
01:26The magic eye
01:26That captures and holds
01:28A moment's action
01:29A pinpoint in time
01:32Today the camera serves
01:33An ever-expanding field of uses
01:35Familiar to all servicemen
01:38And yet for most of us
01:40Photography appeals by
01:42Fixing permanently chapters
01:43In our own lives
01:45And in the lives of those around us
01:49But there was a day
01:51Before the high-speed
01:52Precision instrument
01:53A day of crude
01:54Wooden box cameras
01:57Fortunately for us
01:58It was also a day
01:59When a small group
02:01Of pioneers
02:02With imagination
02:03Forsaw the possibilities
02:05Of that magic eye
02:09Matthew Brady
02:10A young New York State
02:12Farm boy
02:13Was chief among those
02:15Enthusiasts in the newly born art
02:17In addition to his own work
02:19Brady collected
02:20The prints of others
02:21Building a pictorial record
02:23Of our American past
02:26The nation's capital
02:27In an era of
02:29Unpaved dirt streets
02:30And horse-drawn vehicles
02:43Replacing that earlier White House
02:45Destroyed in the war of 1812
02:47Was the handsome new home
02:49Of our presidents
02:51When we speak of those past presidents
02:53Their faces are familiar
02:57John Quincy Adams
03:01Martin Van Buren
03:06Andrew Jackson
03:08Their faces were made familiar
03:11Through the work of
03:11Matthew Brady
03:12Preserved for us too
03:14Are those early writers
03:16Pride of our growing
03:17National culture
03:18Nathaniel Hawthorne
03:23Edgar Allan Poe
03:28Washington Irving
03:33The beloved poet
03:34Walt Whitman
03:36And what schoolboy
03:37Doesn't know the faces
03:38Of our statesmen
03:39Henry Clay
03:42John Calhoun
03:46Daniel Webster
03:48Men who shaped
03:50And guided
03:51Our young republic
03:53They built well
03:54But soon within
03:56The country's capital
03:57Still awaiting
03:58The completion
03:59Of the now familiar dome
04:00The storm clouds
04:02Of the slavery issue
04:03Threatened national unity
04:09As the crisis sharpened
04:12Brady saw a new use
04:13For the camera
04:15Abraham Lincoln
04:16Whom Brady had photographed
04:18As a young congressman
04:20From Illinois
04:20Now sat in Washington
04:22As president
04:23Of the divided nation
04:25From him
04:26Brady received permission
04:28To make a record
04:29Of the war
04:30That could not
04:31Be held back
04:36We are coming
04:37Father Abraham
04:38So sang the volunteer units
04:40Responding to
04:41Lincoln's call to arms
04:48Hastily constructed camps
04:50Sprang up
04:51Crude and comfortless
04:52By today's standards
04:56The growing manpower
04:58Had to be supplied
04:59And equipped
05:00Furnished with the weapons
05:01Needed to fight
05:02This country's
05:03Bloodiest war
05:08The means to move
05:10Those masses of supplies
05:11And equipment
05:12Were organized
05:12And assembled
05:17This was a day
05:19Before the phrase
05:20Motor pool
05:21Had been coined
05:25Old Dobbin
05:26Was the hay-powered engine
05:27That turned the wheels
05:28Of war
05:35The now middle-aged
05:36Brady and his assistants
05:38Recorded all
05:40What is it wagons
05:42Was the name
05:43Soldiers gave
05:44To the mysterious
05:44Horse-drawn photo labs
05:46That Brady sent
05:47Into the field
05:48The clumsy contraptions
05:50Were to become
05:50A familiar sight
05:52Wherever men
05:54Were mustered
05:54And trained
06:01Training then
06:02Met the inevitable
06:04Close-order drill
06:05But also
06:06Long-forgotten formations
06:08Such as the
06:10Hollow Square
06:11Defense against
06:12Cavalry attack
06:15The cigarette
06:16Had not yet
06:17Been invented
06:18But the civilian
06:19Turned soldier
06:20Took ten
06:21And welcomed
06:22That brief break
06:23From duty
06:27Preparation
06:28Has its own
06:29Grim ends
06:30The conflict
06:31Flared into full flame
06:33And presently
06:34The capital itself
06:35Had to fling up
06:37Hasty defenses
06:37Against sudden
06:38And determined
06:39Attack
06:43War
06:44Now in full
06:45Violence
06:46Was being carried
06:47To our inland waters
06:49As well as
06:49On the high seas
06:52The nation's shipyards
06:54Were turning out
06:55Newer
06:56More effective
06:57Gunboats
06:59For the first time
07:01Naval warfare
07:03Saw revolutionary
07:04New ships
07:05Sheathed in armor
07:07The expanding navy
07:09Had ceased
07:10To be the property
07:11Of the new
07:11England states
07:12With their
07:13Deeply rooted
07:14Seafaring traditions
07:15Men and more men
07:17Were needed
07:17And they came
07:19From inland cities
07:20And the western plains
07:22Mechanic
07:23And farmer
07:24Proved they too
07:25Could develop sea legs
07:27And man a 40 pounder
07:34Mere boys
07:35Were enlisted too
07:36Youngsters
07:37Who could run powder
07:38To the waiting gun crews
07:44The awakening sciences
07:47Of the century
07:47Found uses
07:48On the battlefield
07:49The telegraph corps
07:51From which emerged
07:53Today's signal corps
07:54Brought new speed
07:55Into communications
07:56So highly technical
07:58Was their work considered
07:59That even linesmen
08:01Were often
08:01Civilian technicians
08:06Born too
08:07Was warfare's
08:09First venture
08:10Into the skies
08:10Balloon reconnaissance
08:12Was employed
08:14To spot enemy batteries
08:18The balloon
08:19Was frequently
08:20Set adrift
08:21In the belief
08:22That a favorable breeze
08:23Would carry it back
08:28Sometimes it did
08:33Of civilian origin
08:34Was the publicly
08:35Endowed
08:36United States
08:37Sanitary commission
08:38One day
08:39It would evolve
08:40Into our present
08:41American Red Cross
08:45The tragic aspects
08:47Of all wars
08:48Past and future
08:49Were soon evident
08:53This was
08:54Richmond, Virginia
08:58Charleston
09:03Fredericksburg
09:07War meant too
09:09The uprooted
09:10The homeless
09:11Refugee
09:12The prisoner of war
09:15Doomed to a
09:16Captivity
09:16Under subhuman
09:18Conditions
09:22These were the wounded
09:23In an era
09:25When the trifling
09:26Flesh wound
09:27Would lead to
09:28Gangrene
09:28And amputation
09:32When hospitals
09:33Were few
09:34And far behind
09:35The lines
09:41Finally
09:41War meant
09:43Those who would
09:43Fight no more
09:44So ended
09:46483,000 Americans
09:48North and south
09:50A total
09:51Not even reached
09:52In World War II
09:56What do we know
09:57Of the
09:57Day-to-day life
09:59Of the man
09:59Who served
10:00Well like his
10:01Counterpart today
10:02He lived in
10:04Countless
10:05Company streets
10:07Winter quarters
10:08Were crude
10:09Log shacks
10:10Built by himself
10:13He knew fatigue
10:14And details
10:16And he killed
10:17Boredom in his own way
10:18And polished up
10:20Before endless
10:21Inspections
10:22And reviews
10:28When and where
10:30Possible
10:30He enjoyed rare
10:32Visits from
10:32Family and
10:33Friends
10:37There was no
10:38Handy PX
10:39But licensed
10:40Tradesmen
10:41Called
10:41Suttlers
10:42Set up shop
10:43And even
10:44Followed the troops
10:45Into the field
10:46And on their
10:46Campaigns
10:55Great-grandpa
10:57Posed for photos
10:58To send to his
10:58Girl back home
10:59Sent his folks
11:00A picture of the
11:01Outfit too
11:02And his own
11:04Buddies
11:06Like today
11:07There was
11:08Always one
11:08Comic
11:10One clown
11:16The service
11:17Man of that
11:18Far-off day
11:19Carried his
11:20Faith into
11:20The field
11:22Doubtless
11:23He prayed
11:23For survival
11:24And for the
11:25War's end
11:29It came
11:30At Appomattox
11:32With the
11:33Collapse of the
11:33Confederacy
11:34And General Lee's
11:36Surrender to
11:37General Grant
11:40Yes
11:41Peace came
11:43But only after
11:45Battlefields like
11:46Gettysburg
11:47Had immortalized
11:48In blood
11:49The courage
11:50Of brother
11:51Ranged against
11:52Brother
11:56Gettysburg
11:57Where a parade
11:59And now
11:59Forgotten
12:00Ceremonies
12:01Introduced
12:02A never
12:02To be
12:02Forgotten
12:03Address
12:03By the
12:04War-weary
12:05Lincoln
12:06Within two
12:07Years
12:08The president
12:09Dedicated to
12:10Binding the
12:11Nation's
12:11Wounds
12:11Was shot
12:13Down
12:13By the
12:14Assassin
12:14John Wilkes
12:15Booth
12:19The camera
12:20Brings us
12:21Ford's
12:22Theater
12:22The final
12:23Scene
12:23And the
12:25Presidential
12:25Box
12:26Where the
12:27Tragedy
12:27Struck
12:32It brings
12:33Us to
12:33The actress
12:35Laura Keene
12:36The last
12:37Person on
12:38Home the
12:38Unsuspecting
12:39President's
12:40Gaze
12:40Rested
12:42It has
12:43Even
12:43Preserved
12:44For us
12:44The 21
12:45Year old
12:45Dr. Leo
12:46Who emerged
12:47From the
12:47Horror stricken
12:48Crowd to
12:49Attend
12:49The dying
12:50Lincoln
12:55An era
12:56Had ended
12:56The first
12:58But not the
12:59Last to be
13:00Seen through
13:00The magic
13:01Eye of the
13:01Camera
13:01The pages
13:03Of our
13:03History
13:04With new
13:05Pages yet
13:05To be
13:05Added
13:06All our
13:07Yesterdays
13:08Are preserved
13:09For generations
13:10To come
13:11For this
13:12Achievement
13:13A major
13:14Share of
13:15Our gratitude
13:15Must rest
13:17With the
13:17Man whose
13:18Foresight
13:18Made it
13:19Possible
13:20Earliest
13:20Of American
13:21Combat
13:22Photographers
13:22He lived
13:23To within
13:24Four years
13:25Of our
13:25Own century
13:26The pioneer
13:27Matthew
13:29Reagan
13:36Clara Barton
13:37Clara Barton
13:37Is famous
13:38In history
13:38Today
13:39As the
13:40Founder
13:40Of the
13:40American
13:41Red Cross
13:42To the
13:43Wounded
13:43Soldiers
13:44Of the
13:44Civil War
13:45Both the
13:46Blue and
13:46The
13:46Grey
13:47However
13:47She was
13:48Remembered
13:49As the
13:49Angel
13:49Of mercy
13:50Who fed
13:51Them
13:51And treated
13:52Their wounds
13:53She had
13:54No official
13:55Standing
13:55She received
13:57No money
13:57For her
13:58Services
13:58Yet this
14:00Dedicated
14:00Woman
14:01Devoted
14:02Her life
14:02To the
14:03Cause of
14:03Humanity
14:07It was
14:08The fall
14:08Of 1862
14:09For more
14:10Than a
14:10Year
14:11The civil
14:11War
14:11Had raged
14:12And the
14:13Union
14:13Army
14:13Of the
14:13Potomac
14:14Had known
14:14Only a
14:15Series
14:15Of sharp
14:15Defeats
14:21Casualties
14:22Were high
14:22And the
14:23Means
14:23Of caring
14:24For them
14:24Tragically
14:25Inadequate
14:25Hundreds
14:26Who could
14:27Have been
14:27Saved
14:27Died
14:28In the
14:28Field
14:28For lack
14:29Of
14:29Proper
14:29Care
14:33Already a
14:34Part of
14:34History
14:35Were the
14:35Battles
14:35Which we
14:36Know as
14:36Bull Run
14:37The
14:37Seven Days
14:38And Jackson's
14:39Valley Campaign
14:40Each had
14:41Been a
14:41Costly
14:42Failure
14:42For the
14:42Union
14:43Forces
14:43And in
14:44The
14:44North
14:44People
14:45Began
14:45To
14:45Wonder
14:45If the
14:46South
14:46Could be
14:47Defeated
14:47And the
14:48Union
14:48Preserved
14:52In the
14:53Most tragic
14:53And bitterly
14:54Punitive
14:54Fighting
14:55Our
14:55Nation
14:55Has
14:55Ever
14:56Known
14:56American
14:57Fought
14:57Against
14:58American
14:58And the
14:59Casualty
15:00Lists
15:00For
15:00Both
15:00Sides
15:01Skyrocketed
15:02As
15:02On
15:03American
15:03Hills
15:03And in
15:04American
15:04Valleys
15:04Cannon
15:05And
15:05Musket
15:06Flung
15:06Their
15:06Hot
15:07Metal
15:07Among
15:07The
15:07Men
15:08And
15:08Horses
15:08Of
15:09Both
15:09Sides
15:22The
15:23Spectacle
15:24Of
15:24Suffering
15:24Was
15:24Piteous
15:25Perhaps
15:26Especially
15:26So
15:27To
15:27Clara
15:27Barton
15:28For
15:28She
15:28Decided
15:29To
15:29Do
15:29Something
15:30About
15:30It
15:32The
15:32Already
15:33Spare
15:33Face
15:33Of
15:34The
15:34Man
15:34In
15:34The
15:34White
15:34House
15:35Seemed
15:35To
15:35Grow
15:36Even
15:36More
15:36Gaunt
15:37Under
15:37A
15:37Constant
15:38Flood
15:38Of
15:38Criticism
15:39And
15:39Urgent
15:39Demands
15:40For
15:40An

15:47The
15:47Situation
15:47As
15:48South
15:49Of
15:49The
15:49Potomac
15:50He
15:50Added
15:50A
15:51Measure
15:51To
15:51The
15:51Legend
15:51Of
15:52His
15:52Invincibility
15:52By

16:14Repeated
16:15Successes
16:15And

21:46Between us
21:47Tearing a hole in my sleeve
21:48And burying itself in his body
21:51There was no more to be done for him and I left him to his rest
21:54I have never mended that hole in my sleeve and I wonder if a soldier ever does mend a bullet
22:01hole in his coat
22:06The patient endurance of these men was astonishing
22:09By the wooden fence a soldier lay with a ball lodged in the bones of his cheek
22:14I told him I would go for the surgeon but he caught my arm
22:17They can't come for me now he said I have to wait my turn
22:21Please you take the ball out for me
22:24This was a new call
22:26I had never severed the nerves and fibers of the human flesh
22:29But I could not withstand his entreaties
22:38Nearby lay a sergeant from Illinois with a bullet directly through both his legs
22:42When he saw that I had no way of supporting the soldier's head
22:46He shoved himself along the ground with a desperate effort and took the wounded man's head in his hands
23:17I do not think a surgeon would have pronounced it a scientific operation
23:21The doctor suffered almost as much as the patient
23:24But from the relief the man had from his pain I dared to hope it was successful
23:39Three times that day the ground was contested, lost and won
23:43And each time it brought hundreds of wounded from the field to our crowded ground
23:49Each had to be aided and each drained our supplies to the danger mark
23:58At two o'clock an attendant came to tell me that the last loaf of bread had been cut
24:02And the last cracker pounded
24:04We had three boxes of wine still unopened
24:07What should they do?
24:09Open the wine and give them that I said
24:11And God help us
24:15The next instant brought a shout from Sergeant Fields who had opened the first box
24:19Of twelve boxes of wine which we carried, the first nine were packed in sawdust
24:24These last three, when all else was gone, were found to be packed in Indian corn meal
24:37A woman does not hesitate long under such circumstances
24:41There was a fireplace in the spring house
24:43Kettles were picked up and set over the fire
24:45And as quickly as I tell it, I was mixing water and meal for gruel
24:53All the day my men carried buckets of hot gruel for miles down the line to the wounded and dying
24:59where they fell
25:00Food was given both north and south alike
25:04Recognizing the need, not the uniform
25:14Never again was I to experience such a sensation of wealth and competency
25:19We fed hundreds that day
25:22For many it was the first meal since the guns of battle exploded that morning
25:26For many it provided the will and the strength to endure their pain
25:54Twilight began to descend and there were still many to be tended
25:57For the first time since I arrived I saw Dr. Dunn stop work and stand alone in the darkness
26:07You look tired, doctor, I said
26:10Yes, he was tired
26:11Tired of neglect and heartlessness
26:14Here were hundreds of men to be operated on and there was no light to work by
26:18It was then that I called for the lanterns I had brought in the wagons
26:22He looked at me, saying little
26:24But his eyes reflected his gratitude
26:32Through the long starlit night we worked and hoped and prayed
26:37The lights were never snuffed and the tables were never empty
26:47To some we could promise repair and hope
26:56All we could give to others was a comfortable place to die
27:08Men died that night
27:09Slowly and with full realization that life was ebbing out of them
27:14It was to be a northern victory but the victory was costly for both sides
27:21While the guns grew silent, the sounds of tortured men filled the air as an encore of battle
27:27How does one measure victory?
27:30Antietam was a victory for the union, her cannon remained on the field while the foe retreated across the river
27:38The high tide of the Confederacy was turned back
27:41The Emancipation Proclamation was born
27:44But to me, the real victory, the real courage of that memorable day was the endurance of all the soldiers
27:52to the greatest physical agony
27:54And mental anguish
27:56The greatest inhumanity that man can create for man
27:59To them belongs the honor, the memory, the triumph of that day
