Portugal's interior minister resigns following criticism of flood management

Maria Lucia Amaral "felt that she did not have the personal and political conditions necessary to carry out her duties," a presidency statement late on Tuesday said.

00:08handling of the flood response in recent weeks, the presidency announced. Her position will be
00:13temporarily filled by centre-right Prime Minister LuĂ­s Montenegro, whose government has come
00:18under fire for its response to the two weeks of storms that killed at least seven people
00:23and caused an estimated 4 billion euros in damage. Portugal is still dealing with the
00:29aftermath of storms Kristen, Leonardo and Marta. 3,000 people were evacuated in Coimbra on Tuesday
00:35night alone due to the possibility of the river dikes collapsing. Wednesday will be another day
00:41of heavy rain, with nine districts under an orange alert. Warnings are also in effect for much of the
00:47country due to wind. Portugal is under a state of emergency until mid-February due to unprecedented
00:55levels of rain and flooding.
