00:00Now with one of the stars of the hit police drama, The Rookie, and Eric Winter, he plays Sergeant Tim Bradford, the tough as nails officer who finds himself in a love relationship within the department. Eric, welcome to GMAV. We were just talking about the fandom is absolutely nuts on this. We've got the Valentine's Day episode. That's airing tonight. We have a clip, so let's show that and then we'll talk after. I need a last minute present. What about jewelry? That's so cliche. I wanted to get her something special. You're cute, but women really love it.
00:30Hey. Hi. Morning. Coffee. Thank you. Happy Valentine's Day. Happy Valentine's Day. We're not doing presents right now, though, right? We're doing it tonight, right? No, tonight. After the fundraiser. Oh, yeah. Okay, good. Good. You are going to love what I got you. Same.
00:47Oh, yeah. Well, and one of the reasons we said tough as nails, that your character is tough as nails, is because this might show a softer side for you?
00:57A hundred percent. I mean, I think the evolution of Tim Bradford has been pretty exceptional since season one. Here we are in season eight. I credit the writers and Alexi for doing an amazing job with that.
01:07It's just peeling back layers constantly, and he's gotten much softer, still, you know, rough around the edges when it comes to work, but he's letting loose a little bit.
01:17One of the things that's really interesting, we were talking about this during the commercial break, because your show has really done it on social media.
01:24Yeah.
01:24A lot of shows can't say that. I mean, you guys do all these fun TikToks, and you get tens of millions of viewers, and it's really helped the show. Tell us about it.
01:32Yeah, listen, I did a prank, a chicken dance prank. Oh, there's one. I did a chicken dance prank that had 250 million views.
01:40Wow.
01:41And it is, there's no question we're a case study of social media really impacting the show, being in season eight, and we are doing numbers we were doing in season two, and I think recently we were in the LA Times as being the most watched network show with a young demographic of any network show on TV because of social media.
01:58How do you decide which ones to do?
01:59I'm, you know, I was the one on the show that was anti-TikTok. Like, I was completely against the platform.
02:06I launched a premium rum brand, and my wife was like, you need to start doing social media for Palm Republic. So I was like, okay, I'm going to start doing TikTok.
02:13Little did I know that it would become what it became. I don't know, seven million followers on TikTok, and it's literally, we're constantly competing, going through trends.
02:21Okay, what trend can we do? Who's going to do what? And I think I've done the most pranks, and now nobody trusts me.
02:27I've pranked at least four people on the show, and they've done huge viewership.
02:31Talk about your wife, actor, singer, Rosalind Sanchez. 20 years, okay?
02:36I just made it a little over one year much.
02:38Oh, congrats.
02:39So I'm going to take a note of everything you can.
02:41All right, so...
02:42I remember those days.
02:42Oh, those days. Jeez.
02:44All right, so any plans for Valentine's Day? Any gifts that you've gotten so far?
02:48This is the funny thing. 20 years in, it's like, oh, what do you want to do, babe?
02:50You want to go to dinner?
02:52We're a little late to make a reservation. Should we just order in?
02:56What do you want for Valentine's Day? Let's have her pick now instead of the surprise.
03:00Listen, I think it's important to always take these moments and appreciate the relationship and the time put in, right?
03:06And I've just come to learn that it's easier to get her what she wants versus trying to surprise her now.
03:11She's very picky.
03:13I'm like, all right, let's just make you happy and make this easier.
03:15Happy wife, happy life.
03:16Exactly right. But I love good surprises.
03:18So, I mean, you know, a year in, I would say go for the surprise element.
03:22Win those points.
03:22I'm walking out the park.
03:24Yeah, we're going to have a pretty low-key, you know, two kids.
03:28How old are your kids?
03:30I have a daughter who's 14 and my son is 8.
03:32Oh, you guys are in the thick of it.
03:33Oh, yeah.
03:34What do they think of the show? Are they impressed by mom and dad?
03:37You both are so successful, such big stars.
03:39Thank you. Yeah, the irony is my daughter is at that sweet spot age right now of our show.
03:43Like, I mean, all of her friends are obsessed with The Rookie.
03:46They love it.
03:47My daughter can't watch it to save her life because it's me.
03:49And she's like, oh, in her words, this is cringe.
03:52She's like, oh, this is just dad.
03:55I don't want to watch it.
03:55Oh, my God.
03:56But her friends are obsessed with it.
03:58So the support at the school for our show is amazing.
04:02And my son is now starting to figure it out a bit more.
04:04I was on a field trip at the zoo and all these other kids that were a little older saw me
04:09and were like, look at a picture.
04:10Oh, my God, Bradford, Bradford, Bradford, Bradford.
04:12And then all of his friends were going, why is your dad taking pictures with all these kids?
04:16Because he was only in first grade at the time.
04:17Yeah.
04:18That age is still catching up to finding the show.
04:20But I would say by third, fourth grade, it's smash hit.
04:23It must be so cool that you have this young audience that's just so into it.
04:27It blows my mind.
04:28I'm telling you, my wife, to this point, she's like, I don't get every, if I go to any place,
04:32it's young kids that are the ones, you know, dressing up as Bradford for Halloween or stopping me to take pictures.
04:37It's, it's, it's a blessing.
04:39It's a blessing.
04:40By the way, we should say, we love seeing your wife on New Year's Rockin' Eve live.
04:43She did great.
04:44I was going to say, any plans for you guys to collaborate on anything?
04:48You know, we're always trying to, we're working on something right now.
04:51We're trying to put a, um, a movie situation together that's like a nice, fun, uh, Christmas romantic comedy.
04:57We've done that in the past once before.
04:58We've produced, uh, together quite a bit.
05:00But we, we get along really well when we're working together.
05:03We have very different styles.
05:04I'm a clown.
05:05She gets very serious.
05:06So it's, we're, it's, but in, in real life, we're very opposites as well.
05:09So it's always a fun banter going on.
05:11So that's what it's like when we work together.
05:12Oh, awesome.
05:13That sounds so fun.
05:13So fun.
05:14Eric Winter, thank you so much.
05:16Thank you.
05:16You're awesome.
05:17We appreciate having you.
05:17Appreciate you having me.
05:18And The Rookie airs Mondays at 10 p.m. Eastern on ABC, streams the next day on Hulu and Hulu on Disney.
