00:00This was a year of defense, right?
00:02New England had a pretty good defense, especially in the postseason.
00:05Denver had a pretty good defense throughout the season.
00:07This was a year of defense,
00:09but it does feel like Seattle and Houston really separated themselves from the pack.
00:13And if you look at the numbers, you can see that.
00:16They're really like 1-2 in a lot of different categories.
00:20When you were watching it,
00:21because the Texans played that Patriots team in New England, in Foxborough,
00:27a little weather there.
00:28And we saw what happened there.
00:31Both defenses gave Drake May and McDaniels problems.
00:36But obviously, Seattle gave them more issues.
00:39When you watch that yesterday,
00:41and I know we've had the chance to watch the Texans every single day.
00:47Any way that you think Seattle may have been there as the best defense in football
00:53this year when you watch what they did in the postseason,
00:56watch what they did to this like opponent, New England.
00:59And maybe it was Seattle and not Houston this year.
01:02No, not for me.
01:04I mean, look, we're splitting hairs.
01:06I mean, both defenses obviously are really, really good.
01:08But I've said this before.
01:10I think what separates,
01:13like the way you establish yourself as a top defense,
01:18obviously the numbers have to be there.
01:19But I think you have to have great scheme,
01:22and I think you've got to have a great play caller.
01:25And then, you know,
01:27and let's say you've got to have great players obviously as well
01:30that play together,
01:31and you've got to have that chemistry and that unity and all that kind of stuff.
01:34I think both defenses have that.
01:37I think what sets Houston apart from every other defense is
01:42you've got the ability, play in, play out, to create chaos up front.
01:47And you've got the ability in the back end,
01:49with the two corners in particular,
01:52to absolutely lock down not one, but two receivers,
01:57if you so choose to,
01:59depending on what, you know, schematically what you want to do.
02:02I think the Texans are the most elite defense in all of football.
02:09Not knocking the good ones.
02:11Yeah.
02:11You know, not knocking.
02:12I think Philly's a good one.
02:13I think the Rams had a good one.
02:15I think obviously Seattle's is being viewed as one of the –
02:19like I think they're all good.
02:20I just don't think –
02:21I don't think any of those teams have the ability to create chaos
02:28the way that Daniil Hunter and Will Anderson do.
02:31Seattle is the first defense that I watched was like,
02:35oh, they are in attack mode like the Texans are a lot,
02:41especially in yesterday's game.
02:43They were downhill all the time.
02:45Yeah.
02:46From safeties, all of – were downhill.
02:48Now, they also, like the Texans, have the ability to rush forward,
02:51like they did all night last night, to get home.
02:54But the thing with them is they're coming right here interior-wise.
03:00Yeah.
03:00They're coming with Leonard Williams and Byron Murphy right there on the inside.
03:05Now, they've got some guys that are coming around the outside
03:08and their blitz packages.
03:09But their dudes are coming.
03:11They're –
03:11They spent their money inside and the Texans spent their money outside.
03:14And that's where you're really seeing it.
03:16And I think it's similar because I think they have capable outside guys too.
03:20And just like we started to see Sheldon Rankins
03:24and we started to see when they move Autry in
03:25and Tommy start to come alive too.
03:28I would give them the edge, the Texans the edge,
03:32just because I trust the combination of Stingley and Lasseter a little bit more.
03:39But, hey, their corners are nice too.
03:42Yeah, Witherspoon is really, really good.
03:45And so, their secondary is really good too.
03:49But I think we know they got one all pro.
03:53I think Kamari Lasseter is playing at times at that range and that level.
03:58So, I would give them the edge.
04:00But Seattle is the – I mean, it's close.
04:04It's like this – the one thing I definitely came away with was this was not a –
04:09it's Houston and everybody else's defense.
04:11Seattle – Seattle's defense is right there, right there with them.
04:19And I think the secret is also is both teams have exceptional play callers
04:25and guys running the thing.
04:26I don't know who their defensive coordinator is,
04:28just like I'm sure many people don't know who Matt Berkey is.
04:31But at McDonald, he is something else just like D'Amico is.
04:35Both of them cut their teeth as defensive guys and it shows.
04:39Because, I mean, they – it's one of those deals.
04:41That's the thing.
04:42If the Texans ever make it to a Super Bowl and D'Amico gets to get two weeks,
04:47like McDonald got to get two weeks on Drake, May and company, whoo.
04:51Yeah.
04:51Like they will do a number on guys.
04:55But it's really, really tight.
04:56They just – Seattle just has a bunch of dudes that just like –
04:59they got no weakness.
05:01Everybody they're running out there does something.
05:03Well, you mentioned to me the difference.
05:05There's some differences.
05:06Now, you can decide whether they make them better or the Texans.
05:10Like you mentioned the two interior defensive tackles.
05:13Like their ability to stop the run.
05:15And Mike McDonald, the quarterback – the head coach for Seattle spoke about this.
05:19The ability to stop the run and keep two safeties on the roof,
05:24which then allows you to disguise your coverages.
05:28It allows you to be a little bit more safe.
05:30You don't have to close the middle of the field.
05:32You're not putting your corners on a complete island.
05:33I mean, it just really – not simplifies, but it allows you defensively
05:38to be really comfortable if you can keep two safeties on the roof.
05:41And the fact that they got those two interior presence that can stop the run,
05:44particularly the inside run, that's the difference with the Texans.
05:49The Texans' defense is edge-related, both in the box as well as outside of the corner position,
05:56where I think the Seattle Seahawks are more – the interior presence.
06:01You always said that interior presence is the –
06:04Hey, for me, yeah, I'm with you.
06:05I mean, as a quarterback, that's a problem.
06:08But if you just – now, we're talking about one individual.
06:12Now, if you say, Clint, I'm going to put one horse in the middle
06:14or I'm going to put them two horses the Texans got coming off the edge
06:16and them two corners, like it gets real difficult real quick.
06:19Yeah.
06:20Yeah.
06:20So, they're all good.
06:22But to me, personally, I think this Texans' defense is the best in the league.
06:26And I don't think they're going anywhere.
06:27In fact, if I was D'Amico Rines, we can talk about this down the road,
06:30but if I was D'Amico Rines, I would either spend money
06:33or, like, top draft pick on an interior defensive lineman, and I'd be even better.
06:38Next line coming through.
06:40I got to go with the Texans.
06:43They can do more.
06:44Someone else text in.
06:45They pressured May more than we did, Clint.
06:47Come on.
06:48The Patriots looked a lot worse against the Seahawks than they did the Texans.
06:53Yeah, I do think Seattle's game plan yesterday was – I don't know.
07:00That was weird for Drake.
07:02I don't know.
07:03Drake said he had an elbow thing where he got a shot.
07:06I don't know.
07:08Something happened in a game where Drake didn't trust something,
07:10and he looked thoroughly confused and overwhelmed in a way that he did in there.
07:15Well, I mean, look, Drake hit –
07:16And I think Seattle caused a lot of it, but it was just –
07:19When you show Drake an all-out blitz and zero coverage behind it
07:23and before the ball's ever snapped, you show him Kalen Bullock on your slot receiver.
07:27He hits it for a touchdown.
07:28You go up 7-0 with his defense and our offense, then you get real comfortable.
07:32The truth of the matter is the Texans never really put New England Patriots
07:39in a spot where they felt pressure.
07:41Yeah, he hit us early, and at that point in time, you get real comfortable.
07:46Well, yeah, he hit the go route, which is an amazing catch by Boutteo.
07:49Yeah, hit the fourth down shot.
07:51I mean, yeah, he hit a few plays against us.
07:53That's fine.
07:54I just believe that –
07:56I mean, if you want to just go tit for tat, I mean, you look at common opponent.
08:00Now, it was the first of the year.
08:01What did we hold Stafford to, 14 points?
08:04Yeah, 14.
08:04Right now, again, it was the first game of the season.
08:06But if you just want to throw numbers out there, would Stafford –
08:09How many did Stafford score against Seattle, 30?
08:12I think in their three matchups, he threw for almost 1,000 yards.
08:15Yeah, I mean, so –
08:16Don't turn numbers, 8 touchdowns.
08:17We can't just look at common opponents and go, oh, boy, that was just –
08:22I'm just telling you, those two defenses,
08:24I personally believe that the better defense is the Texans.
