00:00U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of a new bridge
00:04linking the U.S. and Canada across the Detroit River.
00:08He says he will not allow the bridge to open unless Canada agrees to hand over
00:13at least half of the project's ownership and meet other unspecified conditions.
00:19In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Washington must be fully compensated
00:24for what he described as everything the U.S. has given its northern neighbour.
00:28He added that negotiations over the issue would begin immediately.
00:33The bridge, which is designed to ease heavy truck traffic between the two countries,
00:37was originally scheduled to open in early 2026.
00:41Construction on the project began in 2018.
00:44Trump has repeatedly targeted Canada during his second term,
00:47including sharply raising tariffs on Canadian imports into the U.S.
00:51Last month, he also warned of a 100% tariff if Canada moved ahead with a trade deal with China.
