00:00The Southern Philippines Medical Center or SPMC in Davao City has successfully performed a state-of-the-art deep brain stimulation or DBS procedure
00:10using the latest artificial intelligence-enabled device aiming to treat a patient with X-linked dystonia Parkinsonism, also known as Lubac disease.
00:21This marks the first time the procedure has been conducted in Mindanao and the first time this specific AI-adaptive sensing device has been used in the entire Philippines.
00:32The first patient is a 39-year-old from South Cotabato who is working as a nurse in Dubai.
00:39He had been wheelchair-bound and in severe pain due to the advanced rare genetic condition.
00:44The six- to eight-hour operation aims to control dysfunctional neural circuits in the brain using implanted electrodes.
00:52SPMC, a public hospital, hopes to make the expensive, equipment-intensive implants available and eventually free
01:00for more than 80 patients expected to be treated for Lubac disease.
